Instead, she stood on the welcome mat with her backpack clutched against her chest and waited for me to tell her where to go.

“Your room is still waiting for you,” I said. “Mia has already taken over half the den.”

Kaylee gave a small smile.

“That sounds like her.”

Mia appeared from the hallway in mismatched socks. “You’re here!”

Kaylee smiled more genuinely when she saw her friend. Mia grabbed her hand and started talking about a game they had been planning to play all week. Kaylee followed, but she kept glancing over her shoulder.

I noticed.

I simply didn’t understand it.

The sleepover had been planned with Kaylee’s father, Greg, earlier that afternoon. He had brought her over in his truck, and Tasha, his partner, had been sitting in the passenger seat. Tasha had leaned across the console before Kaylee got out and said something quietly to her.

I couldn’t hear the words.

Kaylee had nodded.

Then Tasha pointed down.

At Kaylee’s shoes.

I remember thinking it was probably something ordinary. Maybe a reminder not to lose them. Maybe she had bought them and wanted Kaylee to keep them clean.
