frightened me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out a folded piece of paper and handed it to Marissa.<\/p>\n<p>She opened it.<\/p>\n<p>It was a handwritten list.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Measurements.<\/p>\n<p>At the top was one word.<\/p>\n<p>KAYLEE.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath were dates from months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Some were from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Beside them were short descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Left heel.<\/p>\n<p>Right ankle.<\/p>\n<p>Upper arm.<\/p>\n<p>Back.<\/p>\n<p>Bruising.<\/p>\n<p>Did not tell.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wrote that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Tasha did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marissa folded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll determine that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Greg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could you not know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she was controlling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she was strict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He couldn&#39;t finish.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t know whether I was angry with him.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn&#39;t necessarily caused the injuries.<\/p>\n<p>But he had been the adult who should have noticed.<\/p>\n<p>And he hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>At 10:18, another officer arrived carrying a sealed evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was the small metal key.<\/p>\n<p>Marissa looked at Greg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Kaylee gave it to Mia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She appeared on the stairs half asleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweetheart, did Kaylee give you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia nodded.<\/p>\n<p>She disappeared upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later she returned carrying a tiny purple jewelry box.<\/p>\n<p>She opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The key was inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put it here because I thought it was special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marissa crouched beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Kaylee tell you what it was for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it opens something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich door?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mia frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then ran upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her go.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years old.<\/p>\n<p>Still thinking about how to comfort another child.<\/p>\n<p>At 10:31, Marissa returned from the basement evidence team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key opens a cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat cabinet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA small metal cabinet inside the storage room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was were conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Some were instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Some were Kaylee crying.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marissa found one dated three weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Tasha&#39;s voice came through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anyone asks about the basement, what do you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Daddy asks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another voice entered.<\/p>\n<p>Greg&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Greg stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know she was recording me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marissa said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me she was talking to her sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marissa placed the phone on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll determine exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Kaylee&#39;s aunt Rachel arrived at the school.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee recognized her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had driven nearly forty minutes through traffic and ran into the office with her coat half buttoned.<\/p>\n<p>For one terrible second, Kaylee didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>Then she ran.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel dropped to her knees.<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee crashed into her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee buried her face to apologize for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaylee cried.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel held her tighter.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>It felt private.<\/p>\n<p>It felt sacred.<\/p>\n<p>By late afternoon, Kaylee was allowed to leave with Rachel under an emergency safety arrangement while the investigation continued.<\/p>\n<p>Before she left, she hugged me.<\/p>\n<p>Not tightly.<\/p>\n<p>Not for
