I recognized the handwriting immediately because I had seen it on old documents from my father's files.

Richard's handwriting.

I stood at the kitchen counter holding the envelope for several seconds before opening it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

There were only three sentences.

You were never the target.

Julian was.

And there is something in your father's study that neither of you ever found.

I read it twice.

Then I called Eleanor.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

“You're sure it's his handwriting?”

“Yes.”

“Did he say where he is?”

“No.”

“Did he say what he means?”

I handed her the letter.

She read it silently.

When she finished, she looked toward the hallway.

“Your father's study.”

I nodded.

“I thought we'd already searched everything.”

“We searched for financial evidence.”

“And now?”

“Now we search for whatever Richard believed was important enough to hide from his own son.”

We went into the study together.

The room looked exactly as it had on the night everything began.

The green lamp.

The brass clock.

The dark shelves.

My father's desk.

I had spent years sitting there without ever wondering whether the room contained a secret.

Now every drawer looked different.

Eleanor started with the bookcase.

I opened the desk.

We checked behind the framed photographs.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something my father used to say.

“When a drawer sticks, don't force it. Find out what's stopping it.”

I ran my fingers along the bottom drawer.

It opened normally.

The middle drawer did not.

I pulled again.

Nothing.

Eleanor brought a flashlight.

We examined the runners.

Something had been placed behind the drawer.

Not a document.

A thin metal plate.

I removed it carefully.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside lay a small black notebook.

There was no title.

No label.

Just my father's initials on the cover.

C.S.

I opened it.

The first pages contained dates.

Then names.

Then account numbers.

The handwriting changed halfway through.

My father's entries stopped four years before his death.

Someone else had continued the record.

Richard.

The notebook contained payments, meetings, transfers, and coded references to companies I had never heard of.

Near the middle was a page marked with one word.

Julian.

Underneath it was a date.

The same date as Julian's first large transfer.

I looked at Eleanor.

“This was before I knew anything.”

“Yes.”

I turned the page.

Richard had written:

He thinks he is hiding the money.

He doesn't understand that every movement leaves a pattern.

Another page:

Claire must never be told until the evidence is complete.

I stopped.

My hands began to shake.

“Why didn't my father tell me?”

“Maybe he was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Eleanor didn't answer.

I kept reading.

Richard had been investigating Julian long before I knew about the affair.

He had discovered the shell companies.

He had noticed the forged signatures.

He had suspected Julian was preparing to move money outside the family structure.

But there was more.

Richard believed Julian was not acting alone.

Several entries referred to someone called The Custodian.

No name.

No description.

Only initials.

R.S.

I stared at them.

Richard Sterling.

“Could he mean himself?”

“Maybe.”

Then I found a second set of initials.

M.V.

Liam Vance.

The notebook showed that Liam had been involved from the beginning.

But not as Julian's partner.

As an informant.

I sat down.

“Liam was helping Richard.”

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“That explains why Julian trusted him.”

“And why Liam was terrified.”

I turned another page.

A date appeared.

Four months before Julian left.

Then one sentence.

Julian discovered the account.

He knows Richard is alive.

He will accelerate the plan.

The next page was blank.

The page after that contained a single line.

If I disappear, protect Claire first.

I stared at those words.

Richard had known.

He had known Julian would come after me.

He had known the plan was already moving.

And yet he had allowed me to remain in the dark.

I felt anger rising.

Not at Julian.

At Richard.

At my father.

At every man who had decided what I was allowed to know.

Eleanor noticed.

“You have every right to be angry.”

“I don't need protection from the truth.”

“No.”

“I needed someone to trust me with it.”

She nodded.

We continued searching.

At the bottom of the notebook was a small key.

Attached to it was a metal tag.

17.

I knew immediately where it belonged.

My father's old storage facility.

We drove there that afternoon.

The facility was nearly empty.

The manager recognized my name.

“My father rented a unit here.”

“Yes,” he said. “Unit seventeen.”

He led us through a long corridor.

The lock opened with the key.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Old legal files.

Photographs.

Financial records.

And one wooden case.

The case was locked.

The key opened it.

Inside was a small hard drive.

Beside it was another note.

For Claire.

Not Julian.

I connected the drive to a secure computer.

There were hundreds of files.

Most were financial.

Some were recordings.

Others were photographs.

Then we found a folder marked RICHARD.

The first video showed Richard sitting in a room I didn't recognize.

He looked older than the photograph.

Tired.

But alive.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Claire, if you're seeing this, then Julian has already made his move.”

I leaned closer.

Richard explained that his staged death had never been about escaping responsibility.

He had been trying to expose a financial network that had existed for years.

My father had known about it.

He had helped Richard collect evidence.

But my father died before the investigation was complete.

Richard continued.

“Your father trusted very few people. He trusted me. I trusted him. And both of us made the same mistake.”

He paused.

“We believed Julian could be controlled.”

My chest tightened.

Richard explained that Julian had initially been brought into the family business because he seemed disciplined and loyal.

Over time, he learned how the financial structure worked.

Then he began creating his own network.

The shell companies.

The hidden trusts.

The offshore accounts.

The forged documents.

Everything had grown from there.

But Richard admitted something else.

He had allowed Julian to continue because he wanted enough evidence to destroy the entire network.

That decision had cost him years.

And it had nearly cost me my life.

The video ended.

Another file opened automatically.

It contained a list of account numbers.

One was unfamiliar.

I recognized the name beside it.

Sterling Meridian.

But the beneficiary was not me.

It was Chloe.

I looked at Eleanor.

“That can't be right.”

She leaned toward the screen.

“Check the date.”

The account had been created three months before Julian left.

And the beneficiary designation had been changed two weeks before the drugging.

Julian had planned to leave money for Chloe.

Then something had happened.

He changed the beneficiary.

To me.

Not because he loved me.

Because he needed me to appear guilty.

The discovery made the entire plan clearer.

He had originally intended to disappear with Chloe and leave her financially secure.

When he realized investigators were closing in, he redirected the money into a structure that would implicate me.

Chloe had been disposable.

So had I.

The only person Julian had never intended to sacrifice was himself.

We copied everything.

Then I noticed one final file.

It had no title.

Only a date.

The date was tomorrow.

I opened it.

There was a photograph of a train station.

Richard was standing on the platform.

Alive.

And beside him was someone I recognized.

Liam.

Under the photograph was a message.

Meet me before the hearing.

Come alone.

Eleanor looked at me.

“You're not going.”

I shook my head.

“I am.”

“Claire.”

“This time, I'm not going to him alone.”

I closed the laptop.

For the first time, Richard wasn't asking me to survive someone else's secret.

He was asking me to decide what I wanted to do with the truth.

And I knew exactly where I was going.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Meeting at the Station Revealed Why Richard Had Stayed Hidden, but His Final Warning Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

Six weeks after Julian's arrest, I thought the worst part was finally behind me.
