6 – The Meeting at the Station Revealed Why Richard Had Stayed Hidden, but His Final Warning Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

The station was nearly empty when we arrived.

Eleanor stayed across the street with two investigators.

I stood beneath the covered platform, pretending to study the departure board.

Richard was supposed to meet me at noon.

At 12:07, I saw him.

He looked older than the photograph.

His coat was dark.

His hair was almost completely gray.

He walked with a slight limp.

Liam followed several steps behind him.

Richard stopped in front of me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said my name.

“Claire.”

I stared at him.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let your son believe it.”

“He knew.”

That answer stunned me.

“He knew?”

“Julian knew before you did.”

Richard looked toward the tracks.

“He discovered the truth three years ago.”

“Then why did he pretend?”

“Because my death benefited him.”

I felt anger rise again.

“You all knew.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“And no one thought I deserved the truth.”

“We thought telling you would make you a target.”

“I became the target anyway.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

Liam stepped closer.

“I tried to tell you.”

“You sent the video.”

“Yes.”

“You also worked for Julian.”

“I did.”

“For how long?”

“Three years.”

I studied him.

“Were you helping him?”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I was helping Richard.”

He explained that Richard had recruited him to track the movement of money.

Liam had joined Julian's businesses under the appearance of loyalty.

He copied records.

Saved account numbers.

Recorded conversations.

Collected signatures.

But Julian became suspicious.

He began testing Liam.

Eventually, Liam's position became dangerous.

“Why didn't you leave?”

“Because I knew if I left, Julian would know I had betrayed him.”

I understood.

Then Richard handed me a folder.

“This is what I couldn't give you before.”

Inside were original documents.

Not copies.

Not digital files.

Original agreements bearing Julian's signature.

Bank authorizations.

Property transfers.

Correspondence.

And one document signed by Richard.

It stated that if anything happened to him, control of certain assets would transfer to a neutral trustee.

I looked at the name.

Eleanor.

I turned toward her across the street.

She raised one hand.

I understood.

Richard had trusted her all along.

“You knew,” I said when she joined us.

“I knew enough.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was legally restricted from disclosing certain information while the investigation was active.”

I didn't like the answer.

But unlike before, I believed it.

Richard sat on a bench.

“You need to understand something about Julian.”

“I thought I understood him.”

“You understood the husband.”

“What does that mean?”

“You never saw the businessman.”

He explained that Julian had become obsessed with control.

Money was only one part of it.

He wanted leverage.

He wanted ownership.

He wanted people dependent on him.

The financial network had given him all three.

“But why me?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because your name gave him legitimacy.”

I understood.

My family reputation.

My father's foundation.

My financial history.

My clean record.

Julian had used all of it.

He had not married into my family merely for money.

He had married into credibility.

The realization hurt more than I expected.

I thought about the wedding.

The photographs.

The promises.

Maybe some of those moments had been real.

Maybe some had not.

There was no way to know.

Richard handed me another envelope.

“This is the last piece.”

Inside was a photograph.

Julian standing beside Richard.

They were younger.

Maybe fifteen years earlier.

Between them was a man I didn't recognize.

Liam looked at the photograph.

His face changed.

“That's Marcus Vane.”

“Who?”

“The man who originally built the network.”

Richard explained that Marcus Vane had been the financial architect behind the hidden structure.

He had died years earlier.

But his system had survived.

Julian had inherited access to it.

Then he had tried to take control.

The network had become a war between people who believed they owned it.

Julian thought he had won.

He hadn't.

“Where is Marcus's successor?” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“You've met him.”

The words made my stomach tighten.

“Who?”

Richard didn't answer.

Liam did.

“Your father's former accountant.”

I remembered him.

Thomas Reed.

He had retired shortly before my father's death.

He had always been quiet.

Careful.

Almost invisible.

Richard explained that Thomas had maintained the original records.

He had known about the hidden accounts.

He had helped Richard stage the death.

He had also helped Julian move money.

But Thomas had disappeared.

Three days before Julian's arrest.

“Where is he now?”

“We don't know.”

The station announcement sounded overhead.

A train arrived.

Passengers moved around us.

Richard leaned toward me.

“That's why I asked you to come.”

“You need me to find Thomas?”

“No.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“I need you to stop looking.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“You've exposed Julian. The legal case is enough. Let the rest die.”

“You spent four years collecting evidence.”

“I know.”

“Then why stop now?”

“Because the people behind the network are more dangerous than Julian.”

His voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“Julian was arrogant.”

Richard looked toward the tracks.

“Others are patient.”

I thought about the anonymous messages.

The black sedan.

The photograph.

The warnings.

Maybe Julian had not been the only person watching.

Richard stood.

“You need to leave.”

“Where?”

“Home.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has been inside your house.”

My body went cold.

“When?”

“Last night.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She immediately contacted security.

They checked the house.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

But one thing was missing.

The black notebook.

The notebook containing my father's records.

I had left it in the study.

Now it was gone.

I felt sick.

Someone had entered the house while I was asleep.

They had not taken jewelry.

They had not taken electronics.

They had taken only one thing.

The notebook.

The person knew exactly what they wanted.

I called Richard.

He was already walking away.

“Who took it?”

He turned.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

He stopped.

Then said quietly:

“I know who can access it.”

“Who?”

He looked at Eleanor.

Then at me.

“Someone who still has a key to your father's estate.”

The call ended.

I stood there.

Eleanor was pale.

“Who has a key?”

I thought about everyone who had worked for my father.

The list was short.

Then one name surfaced.

Thomas Reed.

He had kept a key for years.

But Thomas was missing.

We returned home.

The study had been searched.

Not damaged.

Searched.

Every drawer opened.

Every shelf checked.

The hidden compartment was empty.

Someone had found it.

The wooden case was still there.

The hard drive was gone.

I stared at the empty space.

Richard had warned me.

The people behind the network were patient.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

At 2:16 a.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man's voice whispered:

“You should have listened to Richard.”

The call ended.

I sat upright.

The house was silent.

Then I heard something outside.

A car door.

I went to the window.

A black sedan sat across the street.

Again.

But this time, the driver didn't leave.

He stayed.

Watching.

I called security.

The car disappeared before they arrived.

At sunrise, Eleanor brought new locks.

We installed cameras.

We changed every password.

We secured every document.

Then Marcus called.

“The stolen hard drive was accessed.”

“Where?”

“An IP address near your father's old office.”

I froze.

“Is that possible?”

“Yes.”

“The office was sold.”

“I know.”

“Who owns it now?”

Marcus sent me the information.

I opened it.

The property belonged to a company I recognized.

Sterling Meridian Holdings.

I stared at the screen.

Julian's company still owned my father's old office.

Even after his arrest.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Then someone is still working there.”

She nodded.

“And we need to find out who.”

That afternoon, we went to the building with investigators.

The office appeared empty.

But one light was on upstairs.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, the rooms had been stripped.

Except one.

My father's old office.

A computer sat on the desk.

The screen was already open.

A video was playing.

Richard appeared.

But this time, he wasn't speaking to me.

He was speaking to Julian.

“Your father is dead,” Richard said.

Julian stood opposite him in the recording.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“You're not Richard.”

The recording ended.

I stared at Eleanor.

“What did we just watch?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then the computer screen went black.

A message appeared.

The man you think is Richard isn't Richard.

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

<a
