home.

He insisted on carrying his own bag.

I told him not to.

He ignored me.

Some things had not changed.

Sofia ran toward him.

“Grandpa!”

He bent down slowly.

“Careful,” Mom warned.

He smiled.

“I've got her.”

Sofia hugged him.

He closed his eyes.

I watched him hold her.

Then I noticed something on the table.

A stack of letters.

Old letters.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Mine.

Dad looked embarrassed.

“What are those?”

He didn't answer.

I picked one up.

It was a letter I had me.

“Because I knew one day I might need to remember who you were before I became afraid of disappointing you.”

I couldn't speak.

He looked away.

“I should have opened them sooner.”

I sat beside him.

“Maybe.”

He nodded.

“Maybe.”

That evening, after everyone went home, I stood on the dock.

The lake reflected the lights from the house.

For years, I had thought peace meant reaching a point where nothing hurt anymore.

I was wrong.

Peace was knowing what hurt, knowing why, and no longer letting the pain make every decision.

Behind me, the porch door opened.

Mom stepped outside.

“Your father is asleep.”

“Good.”

She stood beside me.

“Thank you for staying.”

“I wasn't going to answered.

It was the hospital coordinator.

A family had just been referred to Harbor House.

A mother.

Two children.

No place to stay.

I looked at
