Not once during our seven years together. Gerald had always been the loudest voice in the family, the person everyone adjusted themselves around. He chose the business deals Gabriel accepted, the relatives Rachel was allowed to question, even the days Gabriel visited his mother\u2019s grave. Yet now he stood in the hallway with his shoulders lowered, suddenly looking less like the powerful man I knew and more like someone who had run out of places to hide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d Gabriel said, \u201cwho is this man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger answered before Gerald could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel gave a short, broken laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lifted the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man looked sharply at her.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel opened the envelope with trembling hands and pulled out a photocopy of an identification card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis real name is Marcus Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man&#39;s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does Rachel know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me first, then back at her brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found his photograph in Dad&#39;s study three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald&#39;s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I should have stopped protecting you a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained that she had gone into Gerald&#39;s study looking for her passport. Behind the bottom drawer she had discovered a folder that had clearly been hidden rather than misplaced. Inside were photographs of Marcus, photographs of me, and several pages containing notes she did not understand. She had barely begun reading when Gerald found her there.<\/p>\n<p>He told her she had misunderstood everything.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was protecting the family.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel wiped tears from her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn&#39;t protecting us,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was protecting himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet her finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood against the wall, breathing heavily. Rainwater darkened the shoulders of his jacket. I looked at him and thought of the footprints in our bathroom, the stranger outside the kitchen, the shadow I had seen near the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were following me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel seized the front of his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy were you in my wife&#39;s bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus tried to pull away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father paid me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed to empty the room of air.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel released him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did my father pay you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald gave him a small shake of the head.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a plea.<\/p>\n<p>It was a warning.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make her disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My blood went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told she would be unconscious. I was supposed to remove her from the house before sunrise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake her where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was given an address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel took it.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved across the page.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed the paper to me.<\/p>\n<p>It contained our home address.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath it was another line.<\/p>\n<p>Storage Unit 418 \u2014 Lawson Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside Unit 418?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel answered instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s where Dad keeps the old company records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald snapped, \u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the word no longer carried authority.<\/p>\n<p>There was a drugged drink.<\/p>\n<p>A stranger.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A payment.<\/p>\n<p>A storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>And a family that suddenly seemed to have spent years arranging its conversations around things I was never meant to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m calling the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The sound was strained, almost desperate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think the police will save you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald looked directly at his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you&#39;ve married into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald turned his eyes toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your wife where she got the money for this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t understand what he was suggesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald&#39;s smile widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money your wife has been hiding from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know what he&#39;s talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald pointed toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows exactly what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel, I swear I don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell him about your mother&#39;s account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had been dead for six years.<\/p>\n<p>No one in the Lawson family knew about that account.<\/p>\n<p>No one except\u2014<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that night, he looked genuinely exposed.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I understood that the mango juice had never been the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>The juice.<\/p>\n<p>The white grains.<\/p>\n<p>The photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>The storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s account.<\/p>\n<p>They were pieces of something that had started long before midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel turned toward his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, what did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knows about the inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat inheritance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother left Chloe something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel&#39;s brow furrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Rachel said softly. \u201cChloe&#39;s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>Six years earlier, my mother had died after a short illness. Before the end, she had taken my hand and whispered something I had never understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happens, don&#39;t let the Lawson family know about the blue box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had thought the medication had made her confused.<\/p>\n<p>I never found a blue box.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least, I had believed I hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Then the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>He was calculating his escape.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald suddenly grabbed Rachel&#39;s arm.<\/p>\n<p>She screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel lunged forward.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus backed against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>I ran toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald shoved her away. She struck the dresser and slid down against it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gerald reached into his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out a small brass key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen come with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald gave him a bitter smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he ran.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel followed.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus went after them.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel remained beside me, breathing hard.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The key Gerald had dropped was lying near the dresser.<\/p>\n<p>I picked it up.<\/p>\n<p>Stamped into the metal was one number.<\/p>\n<p>418.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel&#39;s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband knew about the photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw him talking to Dad about them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn&#39;t hear all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me everything you heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shut her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel said\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018If she finds out, she&#39;ll leave me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hit harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped away from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know what he meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChasing Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed my coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going to the storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if it&#39;s dangerous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter tonight, I&#39;m done being afraid of what they might find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We ran downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The rain had become heavier. Gerald&#39;s car was already gone.
