He held a handgun low against his side, as though he had no reason to hurry.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel leaned over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger&#39;s face was mostly hidden beneath a black baseball cap. I could not make out his features, but something else caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>His jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Dark brown leather.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen it before.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks earlier, at Gerald&#39;s house.<\/p>\n<p>That night I had accidentally walked past his study and found Gerald speaking with someone through a half-open door. The moment Gerald saw me, he had slammed it shut.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I assumed the visitor was a business associate.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wasn&#39;t sure.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile you were looking at the photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed her my phone. The emergency operator had our location and had instructed us to stay somewhere secure until officers arrived.<\/p>\n<p>But waiting felt impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel was somewhere inside that storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>If the photograph was current, he could already be in danger.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stepped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were paid to take me somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was paid to move you. Gray hair. Expensive watch. Slight limp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel&#39;s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I caught her arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is only one person in the family who walks like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUncle Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel&#39;s uncle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Lawson was Gerald&#39;s younger brother. The family had always told me that he had left the state nearly twenty years earlier after a bitter dispute over the Lawson business. His name rarely came up. Even Gabriel avoided talking about him.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly I remembered my mother mentioning the Lawson name before she died.<\/p>\n<p>She had looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed she was confused.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she hadn&#39;t been.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake us to the storage facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me where Unit 418 is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand. If Robert is there, you cannot simply walk in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Robert isn&#39;t like Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel&#39;s voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked down the dark road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald frightens people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert makes people disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A police siren sounded somewhere in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus immediately stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you help me tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said quietly, \u201cBecause your mother once helped my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus turned away.<\/p>\n<p>I followed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you know my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped but didn&#39;t turn around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe saved my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked into the rain.<\/p>\n<p>I stood there, stunned.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel came beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did my mother have to do with your family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;ll find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police arrived minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers took our statements while another checked the photograph on my phone. When I mentioned Storage Unit 418, one officer&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c418?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exchanged a glance with his partner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat unit is registered to Lawson Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also an emergency security alert attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of alert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe owner requested that police not be contacted unless there was a confirmed break-in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if someone is inside\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may be trapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re staying here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband is inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll bring him out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed him the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a man with a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>He immediately called for backup.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, three police vehicles were moving through the rain toward the storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>The officers ordered Rachel and me to remain behind them.<\/p>\n<p>We followed in a separate vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The facility was enclosed by tall fencing. Most of the overhead lights were dead, leaving only scattered security lamps flickering through the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Unit 418 stood at the far end.<\/p>\n<p>Its door was open.<\/p>\n<p>Not wide.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough to show a narrow slice of darkness.<\/p>\n<p>The officers drew their weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We moved forward.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw blood.<\/p>\n<p>A thin trail crossed the concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I followed the line with my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>It disappeared beneath the storage door.<\/p>\n<p>One officer raised his flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice! If anyone is inside, come out with your hands visible!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the other officers.<\/p>\n<p>Then pushed the door wider.<\/p>\n<p>The smell reached us first.<\/p>\n<p>Dust.<\/p>\n<p>Metal.<\/p>\n<p>Something burned.<\/p>\n<p>The flashlight beam moved across shelves packed with old company files, photographs, bank statements, and documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then it stopped.<\/p>\n<p>At the far wall stood a large wooden cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Its door hung open.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a blue metal box.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s warning returned with perfect clarity.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t let the Lawson family know about the blue box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel&#39;s voice sounded distant.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>An officer raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t touch anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s watch.<\/p>\n<p>Broken.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no answer.<\/p>\n<p>I moved toward the back of the unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel followed.<\/p>\n<p>The officers searched the shelves, corners, and narrow spaces between the containers.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then we heard a sound.<\/p>\n<p>A knock.<\/p>\n<p>Three times.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>Three more knocks.<\/p>\n<p>From behind the wall.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An officer moved toward the panel.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t a normal wall.<\/p>\n<p>It was a false partition.<\/p>\n<p>The officers pulled at its edge.<\/p>\n<p>The panel shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a narrow hidden room.<\/p>\n<p>And inside lay Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>His hands were tied behind his back.<\/p>\n<p>His shirt was stained with blood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rushed toward him.<\/p>\n<p>An officer checked his pulse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dropped beside my husband.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes opened slowly.<\/p>\n<p>When he saw me, tears immediately filled them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He tried to sit up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t trust him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing became shallow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved toward the blue box.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lawson family didn&#39;t build its fortune legally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-two years ago, my father and Robert were involved in something that nearly destroyed several families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father stole money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel&#39;s eyes moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to make people kill for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the blue box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I noticed a small cut on Gabriel&#39;s palm.<\/p>\n<p>Something was caught beneath his fingers.<\/p>\n<p>A folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>I carefully pulled it free.<\/p>\n<p>It was old and yellowed.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>The letter contained one sentence:<\/p>\n<p>Chloe, if you are reading this, then Gerald has finally come for what he stole from me.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>Below them was another sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Do not trust the man who tells you he loves you.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew about your mother&#39;s investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince before we got married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you married me anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood despite his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, I loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what would happen when you learned who I really was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel&#39;s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father wasn&#39;t the only person involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was there too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t understand everything they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew enough to be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at my mother&#39;s letter.<\/p>\n<p>The final sentence seemed darker now.<\/p>\n<p>Do not trust the man who tells you he loves you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid my mother know about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo months before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to spin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe confronted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cShe told me that if I truly loved you, I would leave you alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence settled over the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was already in love with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to believe him.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted desperately to believe that whatever had begun as deception had somehow become real.<\/p>\n<p>Then something clicked inside the blue box.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>The lid slowly opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photographs, a passport, bank records, a USB drive, and one final envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across it.<\/p>\n<p>CHLOE LAWSON.<\/p>\n<p>I reached toward it.<\/p>\n<p>The officer stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>One message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>IF YOU OPEN THAT ENVELOPE, GABRIEL DIES.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>He was staring at my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>COME ALONE.<\/p>\n<p>An address appeared beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the place immediately.<\/p>\n<p>It was the house where my mother had died.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>He whispered four words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t go there, Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lights inside Storage Unit 418 suddenly went out.<\/p>\n<p>Complete darkness swallowed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Then, somewhere behind us, a man&#39;s voice spoke softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo
