One flashlight flickered on, then another. Their beams swept across the storage unit, catching shelves, cardboard boxes, and the open blue metal case.<\/p>\n<p>The voice came again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was closer.<\/p>\n<p>Not from outside.<\/p>\n<p>From somewhere inside the unit.<\/p>\n<p>One of the officers swung his flashlight toward the rear wall.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then a metallic clang came from the opposite side.<\/p>\n<p>An officer moved toward it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice! Show yourself!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A figure stepped into the weak beam.<\/p>\n<p>Gray hair.<\/p>\n<p>A dark coat.<\/p>\n<p>A slight limp.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Lawson.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel made a strangled sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUncle Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert raised both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want anyone hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tied me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked at him sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to keep you alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou left me bleeding in a wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew someone would find you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s gaze moved toward the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew because I called them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officers immediately surrounded him.<\/p>\n<p>One handcuffed him.<\/p>\n<p>The other searched his coat.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t take my eyes off him.<\/p>\n<p>For twenty-two years, Robert Lawson had existed in our family as a name nobody wanted to explain. Now he stood three steps away from me, older than I expected, thinner than the photographs I had seen, with the tired face of a man who had spent years carrying something too heavy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you come here?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your mother asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t she ever tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause telling you would have put you in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what Dad said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father was never protecting Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what was he doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s answer was so simple that it seemed to make the entire room colder.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the blue box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s eyes moved toward it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money your mother discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer holding Robert asked, \u201cWhat exactly are we dealing with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother worked as an accountant for a company that supplied equipment to several private contractors. She discovered that payments were being routed through shell companies and returned to people inside Lawson Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald and others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was young. Ambitious. Stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Robert continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother found the records. She copied them. She planned to expose everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe disappeared for three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my fingers tighten around Gabriel&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald took her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father kidnapped her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe brought her to the old Lawson property and tried to convince her to destroy the evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she refused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe refused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped her escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence that followed felt enormous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou betrayed Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI finally did the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald blamed me for everything. He told everyone I had stolen company funds and fled. I left because staying meant dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cWe thought you abandoned us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched from a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Gerald threatened your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel&#39;s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe threatened my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me that if I returned, he&#39;d make sure neither she nor the children survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the man standing in front of us.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the family had called him a traitor.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wondered who had written that version of history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the blue box?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked toward it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother&#39;s original records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to expose everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer opened the blue box carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the documents were arranged beneath the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>There were bank statements, transfer records, copies of contracts, handwritten notes, and a small black USB drive.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s handwriting appeared everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Company numbers.<\/p>\n<p>One page had Gerald&#39;s signature.<\/p>\n<p>Another had Robert&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath both signatures was a third name.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Daniel Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho&#39;s Daniel Mercer?\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve hidden enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was Dad&#39;s attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died twelve years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t die naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officers exchanged glances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was preparing to go to federal investigators. Three days before he was supposed to meet them, his car went off a bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One officer asked, \u201cWas that ever investigated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuled an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert looked toward the blue box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother didn&#39;t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the letter again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from outside.<\/p>\n<p>An engine.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>The officer near the entrance raised his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Headlights swept across the storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>A car stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel immediately tried to stand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t let him take the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe isn&#39;t coming for the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is he coming for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The storage unit door suddenly slammed shut.<\/p>\n<p>The officers moved toward it.<\/p>\n<p>A metallic scrape followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was locking us inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove away from the door!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officers tried the handle.<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn&#39;t open.<\/p>\n<p>A smell began spreading through the unit.<\/p>\n<p>Chemical.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp.<\/p>\n<p>Burning.<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone covered their mouths.<\/p>\n<p>The officers started pounding on the door.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything happens, take the USB.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not leaving you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared into my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words frightened me more than the gas.<\/p>\n<p>Then the emergency lights came on.<\/p>\n<p>Red.<\/p>\n<p>Dim.<\/p>\n<p>Flashing.<\/p>\n<p>And through the narrow opening near the ceiling, I saw a silhouette outside.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>He stood motionless in the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Watching us.<\/p>\n<p>Then he raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>In it was the same glass of mango juice.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/readstoryus.com\/?p=2281\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Gerald Offered One Last Bargain While the Evidence in the Blue Box Revealed Why Chloe Had Been Targeted for Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The lights died all at once.
