He kept one hand resting on the zipper as though he expected me to reach over and open it while we were stopped at a traffic light.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted him to tell me.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened at the diner?\u201d I finally asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSal seemed concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always looks concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me to take you home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan stared through the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t say you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were thinking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>The neighborhood passed slowly outside the windshield. Children rode scooters along the sidewalk. A woman watered plants beside her driveway. Someone had left a basketball in the street.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary things.<\/p>\n<p>I found myself wondering how long a child could carry something alone before it stopped being courage and became a burden.<\/p>\n<p>When we reached our house, Evan went straight upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBackpack,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His fingers tightened around the strap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whatever is happening, we&#39;re going to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then he placed the backpack on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t sit.<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out a chair.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined this conversation a hundred different ways during the drive home. None of them prepared me for the way my son looked when he finally sat across from me.<\/p>\n<p>He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Not sleepy.<\/p>\n<p>Exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you saving your money for the bicycle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much should you have by now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his thumb along the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>I softened immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just need you to tell me the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does your envelope keep getting empty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the backpack.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t stop me.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were two notebooks, a water bottle, a folded diner apron, a paperback novel, and several envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>My hand stopped.<\/p>\n<p>There were more than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Some were plain white.<\/p>\n<p>Some were brown.<\/p>\n<p>One had a name written across it.<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Evan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Mrs. Alvarez?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone from the diner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you have an envelope for her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to take that back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromised what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>I held the envelope between my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan, I&#39;m your mother. If someone is asking you for money, I need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe isn&#39;t asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you giving her money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe needs it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeeds what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer power was shut off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get money to pay her bill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy paycheck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave her your paycheck?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan, that&#39;s your money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou worked for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re saving for your bicycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she was sitting outside her apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told everyone she liked sitting outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice had become smaller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she was sitting outside because there was no electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought maybe if I gave her enough, she could turn it back on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe cried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in my chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her it was an advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn advance on what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told her your bicycle savings was an advance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wouldn&#39;t take it otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A strange mixture of anger and tenderness moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to me too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to lecture him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I asked, \u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much money have you given away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer scared me more than any number could have.<\/p>\n<p>He had been working every Saturday for months.<\/p>\n<p>If he didn&#39;t know where the money went, then I didn&#39;t know where my son was going either.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the envelopes back toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut them on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>One by one.<\/p>\n<p>There were receipts mixed among them.<\/p>\n<p>Pharmacy receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Grocery receipts.<\/p>\n<p>A utility bill.<\/p>\n<p>A school lunch account statement.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten note with an address.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know their names?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became very still.<\/p>\n<p>He continued before I could answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Dad died, everyone kept helping us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors brought casseroles.<\/p>\n<p>People left grocery cards.<\/p>\n<p>Someone paid one of our utility bills.<\/p>\n<p>A woman from church brought Evan a winter coat because she had heard he needed one.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered how often I cried after people left.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I was ungrateful.<\/p>\n<p>Because accepting help made the truth unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p>We had lost Michael.<\/p>\n<p>We were struggling.<\/p>\n<p>Evan had been watching all of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated it,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing you need people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt tears gathering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t need to be ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he didn&#39;t sound convinced.<\/p>\n<p>He touched one of the envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just thought if I could help somebody else, maybe it would feel different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached across the table.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled his hand away.<\/p>\n<p>Not from me.<\/p>\n<p>From the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I also want the bike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked embarrassed by the admission.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re allowed to want the bike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re allowed to want things for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to believe the conversation had reached the heart of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed the photograph tucked beneath the receipts.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Evan standing beside a little girl in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>Both were covered in flour.<\/p>\n<p>The girl&#39;s smile was enormous.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, someone had written a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for making Lily smile again.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the photograph over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Lily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s from one of the families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was having a bad day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t explain the cupcakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled despite himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe likes decorating them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you baked with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I helped her family with groceries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>There was something about his smile in it that I hadn&#39;t seen at home in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Not happiness exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t do this alone,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded again.<\/p>\n<p>Then he whispered, \u201cMom, please don&#39;t tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause then they&#39;ll stop letting me help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t how adults work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Sal found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Sal find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I wasn&#39;t saving everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA while ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he said what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me I couldn&#39;t keep doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he tell you to stop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>I gathered the envelopes into a pile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going back to the diner tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His head snapped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Sal will be angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he&#39;ll be angry with both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely frightened now.<\/p>\n<p>Not of Sal.<\/p>\n<p>Of what Sal might tell me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood that much.<\/p>\n<p>But I still didn&#39;t understand the size of the secret.<\/p>\n<p>The next afternoon, Sal called.<\/p>\n<p>I answered while Evan was upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to come by the diner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there&#39;s something I should have told you sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Evan in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t something I should explain over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he steal something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid somebody hurt him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sal exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to trust me on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the wrong thing to say to a mother.<\/p>\n<p>I was already reaching for my keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I hung up, Evan was standing at the end of the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>He had heard enough.<\/p>\n<p>His face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet&#39;s go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t make me explain everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know what everything is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than anything he had said all weekend.<\/p>\n<p>We drove to the diner without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Sal was waiting in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The moment he saw us, he closed the door behind us.<\/p>\n<p>The cooks disappeared into the pantry.<\/p>\n<p>A waitress pulled the swinging doors shut.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly there were only four people in that room.<\/p>\n<p>Sal.<\/p>\n<p>Evan.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>And a backpack sitting on a metal table.<\/p>\n<p>Sal pointed at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#39;s time you saw what he&#39;s been carrying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for the zipper.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
