Sterling estate, she became careful.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke softly.<\/p>\n<p>She kept her hands in her lap.<\/p>\n<p>She asked permission before touching anything.<\/p>\n<p>One afternoon she came into my had been forced to ask such a question.<\/p>\n<p>Two nights later, Barbara hosted a formal dinner for close relatives.<\/p>\n<p>I dressed Lisa carefully.<\/p>\n<p>She wore a navy velvet dress and a small silver bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>She stood in front of the mirror while I fixed her hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I look fancy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFancy beautiful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery fancy beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She grinned.<\/p>\n<p>The smile disappeared the moment we arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara opened the door herself.<\/p>\n<p>She kissed Brandon&#39;s cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>She barely acknowledged me.<\/p>\n<p>Then her eyes dropped to Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The single syllable contained more rejection than an entire argument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon&#39;s shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was invited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barbara smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose she can stay in the kitchen if the adult conversation becomes too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;ll sit with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barbara&#39;s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t argue.<\/p>\n<p>She simply turned away.<\/p>\n<p>At dinner, Lisa was seated at the far end of the table.<\/p>\n<p>A large floral arrangement blocked much of our view of her.<\/p>\n<p>She sat beside an elderly relative who couldn&#39;t hear her and another guest who spent the entire meal speaking to someone on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa tried to draw.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her for several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>She wasn&#39;t smiling.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly stood up.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brandon touched my knee beneath the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll move her,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could, Barbara raised her glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon, I was speaking with Eleanor yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the temperature in the room change.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked how you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe still regrets that you two separated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor always understood the responsibilities that come with this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon put his fork down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barbara gave a soft laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re so sensitive lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then she smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dinner continued.<\/p>\n<p>But the evening had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I carried plates toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>As I passed the pantry, I heard Barbara speaking to her sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t understand what she&#39;s done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her sister answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has inserted herself into a family that was already complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon thinks he&#39;s being noble. He thinks love means accepting every burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her sister said something.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara&#39;s response was colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;ll learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I backed away.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard another sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the ceremony is over, there will be no question about where she stands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to the dining room before they could see me.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon found me near the coat rack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re pale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t sleep much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He touched my cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t have to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, I wanted to tell him everything.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I said, \u201cLet&#39;s go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the air was cold.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa climbed into the back seat and immediately fell asleep.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon drove.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the city lights slide across the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother isn&#39;t going to ruin this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I won&#39;t let her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was certain.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to believe that certainty could protect us.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I didn&#39;t understand that Barbara&#39;s greatest advantage wasn&#39;t power.<\/p>\n<p>It was that she understood exactly how much people were willing to tolerate in the name of keeping peace.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, the wedding coordinator called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a minor adjustment to the ceremony schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of adjustment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Sterling requested that your final dress fitting happen at her tailor&#39;s studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that was already completed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are apparently some alterations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Barbara.<\/p>\n<p>She answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does the dress need another fitting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, darling.
