5 – Brandon Held the Drawing Between Them, and for the First Time Barbara Realized Her Son Was No Longer Willing to Protect Her

Brandon held the drawing at chest height.

The paper trembled slightly between his fingers.

Not because he was frightened.

Because he was trying very hard not to lose control.

Barbara stared at him.

“Brandon, this is a wedding,” she said quietly. “Do not make a scene.”

He looked at the purple suitcase on the floor.

Then at Lisa.

Then back at his mother.

“You already made the scene.”

No one moved.

The organist had stopped playing.

The guests sat motionless in their pews, some looking at Barbara, others at me, most avoiding eye contact altogether.

Megan was still kneeling beside the train, working at the nylon cords.

I could hear the tiny metallic clicks beneath the fabric.

Brandon walked toward his mother.

“What did you tell Lisa?”

Barbara lifted her chin.

“I told her the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That this marriage comes with responsibilities.”

“You told a seven-year-old that she was a burden.”

Barbara's lips tightened.

“I never used that word.”

Lisa whispered, “She said it.”

Brandon turned toward her.

“Did she?”

Lisa nodded.

“She said Daddy would get tired of me.”

Barbara's face changed.

For the first time, something resembling fear appeared in her eyes.

“That is not what I said.”

Lisa pressed herself against Brandon's side.

“You said Mom tricked him.”

A murmur moved through the cathedral.

Barbara looked around sharply.

“This is ridiculous.”

Brandon's voice remained quiet.

“What else did you tell her?”

“Nothing.”

“Look at me, Mom.”

She did.

“What else?”

Barbara hesitated.

Brandon waited.

Finally she said, “I told her that adults sometimes make mistakes.”

I felt something cold settle inside my chest.

Barbara had been doing this for months.

Not one insult.

Not one confrontation.

A series of small messages delivered when Brandon was not present.

Lisa was a burden.

I had trapped him.

Their family was better without us.

And every time I questioned something, Barbara made me doubt my own judgment.

Brandon seemed to understand it all at once.

He turned toward me.

“Emily.”

I could not answer.

He came closer.

“I am sorry.”

The words were so simple that they nearly broke me.

I looked at him.

“For what?”

“For every time I told you she didn't mean it.”

I swallowed.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

Behind us, Barbara said, “Brandon, you are allowing yourself to be manipulated.”

He turned around.

“Stop.”

One word.

Barbara froze.

“I am your mother.”

“And she's my wife.”

The word wife echoed through the cathedral.

I looked at him.

We had not even exchanged vows.

But he had said it without hesitation.

Barbara's expression hardened.

“You haven't married her yet.”

Brandon looked toward the altar.

Then at me.

“We were going to.”

He walked toward the priest.

The priest had been standing near the altar, visibly uncomfortable.

Brandon stopped before him.

“Father, I need a moment.”

The priest nodded.

“Of course.”

Brandon returned to me.

Megan finally freed the first cord.

A small bundle of nylon fell to the floor.

She stared at it.

Then at me.

“Emily, this isn't part of the dress.”

“I know.”

She pulled at another section.

A second clasp came loose.

Beneath the train were more hidden compartments.

Inside them were small objects.

Receipts.

Photographs.

Documents.

A phone.

Megan lifted the phone.

“What is this?”

Barbara stepped forward.

“Give me that.”

Megan pulled it back.

Brandon looked at his mother.

“What is on the phone?”

“Nothing.”

“That is not an answer.”

Barbara's voice sharpened.

“You have no right to search my belongings.”

Megan looked at the device.

“It was attached to Emily's dress.”

Brandon took it.

The screen was locked.

He pressed the power button.

A notification appeared.

Several messages.

All from Barbara.

The newest had been sent less than an hour earlier.

The message read:

He will understand once everyone sees it.

Brandon stared at the screen.

I watched his face.

He opened the message thread.

There were dozens.

Some were to the tailor.

Some were to a private investigator.

Others were to a lawyer.

My stomach tightened.

“Why did you hire a private investigator?” Brandon asked.

Barbara did not respond.

“Mom.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

“From her.”

He looked at me.

Then at Lisa.

Then back at the phone.

“What did you investigate?”

Barbara's silence answered more than words could.

Brandon scrolled.

I saw my name.

My old apartment.

My teaching job.

My bank accounts.

Lisa's school.

My parents.

People I had not spoken to in years.

Barbara had investigated everything.

But then Brandon stopped scrolling.

His face changed.

He had found something.

“What is this?”

Barbara moved quickly.

“Give me the phone.”

He stepped backward.

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She didn't.

He looked at the screen again.

“Mom, why were you paying someone to follow Emily?”

The room seemed to shrink.

Barbara finally spoke.

“I needed information.”

“For what?”

“To protect the family.”

“From my wife?”

“From a woman who has been hiding things from you.”

I felt my stomach twist.

“What things?”

Barbara looked at me.

“Ask your wife.”

Brandon turned toward me.

For one terrible moment, I thought the entire room had shifted again.

Then he shook his head.

“No.”

Barbara blinked.

“What?”

“If there were something to tell me, you would have told me.”

“I tried.”

“You humiliated her instead.”

“I exposed her.”

“You put a child's name on a suitcase and attached it to her dress.”

Barbara's mouth tightened.

“It was symbolic.”

“It was cruel.”

The word landed heavily.

Barbara looked at the guests.

“You all know what this is about.”

No one answered.

She turned to an older man in the front row.

“Richard?”

The man looked away.

“Do not involve me.”

Barbara's face flushed.

She turned toward another relative.

“You know what I found.”

The woman shook her head.

“I don't want any part of this.”

Barbara seemed suddenly alone.

The woman who had controlled every room she entered no longer controlled this one.

Megan stood.

She held another object from the train.

A small envelope.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

It showed Brandon outside a restaurant.

He was standing beside Eleanor.

They were talking.

Nothing more.

But on the back was a date.

Three months before I met Brandon.

I looked at Barbara.

“Why was this in my dress?”

She didn't answer.

Brandon took the photograph.

He studied it.

“Mom.”

Barbara said nothing.

He turned it over.

There was handwriting on the back.

A sentence.

I had seen Eleanor recently.

Brandon stared at it.

Then he laughed once.

It was not amusement.

It was disbelief.

“You wanted Emily to see this?”

Barbara's silence continued.

“You wanted her to think I was seeing Eleanor.”

“I wanted her to understand that you had options.”

Brandon closed his eyes.

“That was before I met Emily.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Barbara's voice softened.

“Because I knew you would regret this.”

I looked at her.

The answer was almost worse than the cruelty.

She genuinely believed she was entitled to decide which life her son should have.

Brandon folded the photograph.

“Mom, leave.”

Barbara stared at him.

“You are asking me to leave my own son's wedding?”

“No.”

He looked toward the cathedral doors.

“I am telling you to leave my family.”

Her face went pale.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Barbara turned toward me.

Her expression had become strangely calm.

“This is not over.”

Brandon stepped between us.

“Yes, it is.”

Barbara looked at him.

“No.”

She smiled faintly.

“You have no idea what I found.”

Then she walked toward the doors.

Before leaving, she stopped beside Lisa.

Lisa recoiled.

Barbara looked down at her.

“You will understand someday.”

Brandon's voice cracked through the room.

“Don't speak to her.”

Barbara left.

The doors closed behind her.

Nobody moved.

Then Lisa reached for my hand.

I took it.

She squeezed hard.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we still a family?”

I knelt.

I wrapped both arms around her.

“Yes.”

Brandon crouched beside us.

“Always.”

Lisa looked between us.

“Even if Grandma doesn't like me?”

Brandon looked toward the closed doors.

Then back at her.

“Especially then.”

I cried.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn't.

But because for the first time, Lisa no longer looked like she was waiting for someone to reject her.

She looked safe.

The priest quietly approached.

“Perhaps we should postpone the ceremony.”

I looked at Brandon.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

The wedding had changed.

But the decision before us had not.

We still had a choice.

And this time, nobody else would make it for us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Blue Folder Barbara Feared More Than the Wedding Was Still Hidden, and Brandon
