Theft. Potentially financial misconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I didn&#39;t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held up a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not accusing you. I&#39;m telling you what someone may be trying to make investigators believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the evidence is fabricated carefully enough, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the empty compartment in my suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took the folder because it proves the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we need to find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective looked at Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you need to decide whether you want to help your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am asking because once we open this investigation, your family name will be involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family already involved itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She asked us to remain available.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, she stopped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Barbara ever threaten you directly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Her quiet words.<\/p>\n<p>You have no idea what I found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot once?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After she left, the room became quiet again.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa was asleep.<\/p>\n<p>Megan had taken her to the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stood beside the window.<\/p>\n<p>I joined him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I don&#39;t know my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was always careful with money. He taught me to keep records. He hated debt. He hated secrets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he have been investigating his own company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he discovered something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Barbara knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached into my handbag.<\/p>\n<p>There was one thing I had not told him.<\/p>\n<p>A small key.<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was in the blue folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore it was stolen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed it in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t understand what it opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He examined it.<\/p>\n<p>A number was engraved into the metal.<\/p>\n<p>417.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father&#39;s office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my ex-husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me never to give it to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if anyone from the Sterling family ever came asking for it, I should pretend I didn&#39;t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stared at the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, why didn&#39;t you tell me this before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I didn&#39;t know whether it was important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Megan returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLisa is asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She saw the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething my father may have hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Megan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we need to find where it belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Detective Harris called.<\/p>\n<p>She had found something.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Vance had been seen in the city two weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>There was security footage.<\/p>\n<p>A hotel.<\/p>\n<p>A parking garage.<\/p>\n<p>A bank.<\/p>\n<p>All under different names.<\/p>\n<p>But the same man.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris sent us an address.<\/p>\n<p>An abandoned office building.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth floor.<\/p>\n<p>Room 417.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>The key was in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>We went with the detective.<\/p>\n<p>The building smelled of dust and old carpet.<\/p>\n<p>The elevator groaned as it climbed.<\/p>\n<p>When the doors opened, the corridor was empty.<\/p>\n<p>Room 417 stood at the end.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon inserted the key.<\/p>\n<p>It turned.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small office.<\/p>\n<p>No furniture.<\/p>\n<p>No computer.<\/p>\n<p>No papers.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Except a metal filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris checked it.<\/p>\n<p>Locked.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon tried the key.<\/p>\n<p>It opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were folders.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens.<\/p>\n<p>Each labeled with a date.<\/p>\n<p>One had his father&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Another had Barbara&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>A third had my name.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long has he been watching me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photographs.<\/p>\n<p>My apartment.<\/p>\n<p>My school.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa&#39;s school.<\/p>\n<p>My parents&#39; house.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d the detective said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho ordered it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>A payment authorization was attached.<\/p>\n<p>The signature was Barbara&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>His mother had not simply investigated me.<\/p>\n<p>She had monitored me.<\/p>\n<p>For years.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Harris opened another file.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed it to Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a copy of a document dated eight years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>It was signed by Richard Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten note appeared across the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens to me, do not trust Barbara.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon&#39;s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>He read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>I touched his arm.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t move.<\/p>\n<p>The detective turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>There was a second note.<\/p>\n<p>This one was addressed to Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>My son,<\/p>\n<p>If you ever find this, understand that I was trying to protect what belongs to you.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the page had been torn away.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked at the empty space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho tore it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris examined the edge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>We all turned.<\/p>\n<p>The door slammed shut.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had locked us inside.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon rushed toward it.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled the handle.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris drew her weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The smell of smoke reached us.<\/p>\n<p>Megan shouted from behind the filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s smoke coming under the door!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>She was with us.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten for one terrible second that she had followed us into the room.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon pulled her close.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris kicked at the door.<\/p>\n<p>The smoke thickened.<\/p>\n<p>Then a voice came through the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Vance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have left the past alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon shouted, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Michael answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>He still believed we had it.<\/p>\n<p>But the blue folder was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Unless\u2014<\/p>\n<p>I remembered something.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving the hotel, I had checked the lining of my handbag.<\/p>\n<p>There was a second compartment.<\/p>\n<p>I reached inside.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers touched paper.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it out.<\/p>\n<p>A small folded document.<\/p>\n<p>Not the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>One page.<\/p>\n<p>The final page from the folder.<\/p>\n<p>The page I had removed the night before the wedding because I could not understand it.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a signature.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath it, one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara must never know the account exists.<\/p>\n<p>The smoke grew thicker.<\/p>\n<p>Michael spoke again from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held it tightly.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris fired once into the lock.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh air rushed in.<\/p>\n<p>We ran.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the detective looked at the document.<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis account could change everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to a number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA private trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I never knew about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris folded the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Barbara has been hiding something from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked toward the burning building.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Vance was gone.<\/p>\n<p>But now we knew the truth had been hidden somewhere much closer than we imagined.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, the blue folder was no longer the most important evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The real secret was the account Richard Sterling had created in my name.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/readstoryus.com\/?p=2582\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Trust in My Name Had Been Created Before I Met Brandon, and Its First Payment Explained Why Barbara Had Been Watching Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobody spoke for several seconds.
