Smoke drifted across the street while firefighters moved in and out of the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Vance was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, there was evidence that he had been there.<\/p>\n<p>And there was something else.<\/p>\n<p>The private office had not been abandoned at all.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been using it recently.<\/p>\n<p>A coffee cup still sat on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>There were fresh tire tracks outside.<\/p>\n<p>The detective arranged for the building to be searched.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know whether to be angry or frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can be both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father and I fought before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me to take a position in the family company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I didn&#39;t trust the people around him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the smoking building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was becoming paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe accused someone of moving money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never asked who.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was twenty-four and angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last thing he said to me was that one day I would understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe this is what he meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon nodded.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer approached Detective Harris.<\/p>\n<p>They spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harris came over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recovered a partial hard drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed the evidence bag to another officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s also something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surveillance files weren&#39;t all about Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara was being watched too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The revelation silenced us.<\/p>\n<p>Harris explained that several files contained photographs of Barbara meeting Michael Vance.<\/p>\n<p>Some were recent.<\/p>\n<p>Some dated back years.<\/p>\n<p>The oldest was taken shortly after Richard Sterling&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara had been meeting Michael regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Not secretly enough to avoid every camera.<\/p>\n<p>Just secretly enough that nobody in the family was supposed to notice.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years.<\/p>\n<p>The same period that had begun with his father&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>The same period in which Michael supposedly vanished.<\/p>\n<p>The same period during which the trust had been established.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat was the first payment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris looked at the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-five thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was twenty-four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought back.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years earlier, I had been working two jobs.<\/p>\n<p>I had been struggling to keep my apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa had not yet been born.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard the Sterling name.<\/p>\n<p>I had never met Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered something.<\/p>\n<p>A hospital.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>An envelope.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten her name.<\/p>\n<p>But I remembered the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>I had been leaving after visiting my mother when an elderly woman approached me.<\/p>\n<p>She said someone had asked her to find me.<\/p>\n<p>She gave me an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside had been twenty-five thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I had returned it.<\/p>\n<p>Or thought I had.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at received an envelope from someone I didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter my mother&#39;s surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do with the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI returned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it happened before we met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I mean why did you never mention it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I thought it was some kind of mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris asked, \u201cDo you remember the envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Blue.<\/p>\n<p>The folder.<\/p>\n<p>The page.<\/p>\n<p>The trust.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>Harris asked, \u201cDid it have a name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny marking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There had been an embossed symbol.<\/p>\n<p>A small Sterling family crest.<\/p>\n<p>I had never understood what it meant.<\/p>\n<p>Now I did.<\/p>\n<p>The trust had been created for me.<\/p>\n<p>Before I ever met Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>Before Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone knew what our lives would become.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Sterling had chosen me for a reason.<\/p>\n<p>The question was why.<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the hotel under police escort.<\/p>\n<p>Megan stayed with Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon and I sat across from each other.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding clothes were still piled in a corner.<\/p>\n<p>The flowers had begun to wilt.<\/p>\n<p>Everything from the previous day seemed absurd now.<\/p>\n<p>We had planned a marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we had uncovered an eight-year conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon reached across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was firmer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to hear me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Harris.<\/p>\n<p>She had recovered part of the hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>There was one readable file.<\/p>\n<p>A bank statement.<\/p>\n<p>The account had been opened in my name by Richard Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>The beneficiary designation was unusual.<\/p>\n<p>If Emily died before the age of forty, the money would transfer to her first child.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa.<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would my father do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sent another document.<\/p>\n<p>A letter.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon read it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what Barbara has done. I know Michael helped her move the money. If I confront them now, they will destroy the evidence. I have created a trust for the one person who can eventually expose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved to me.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cOne person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily does not know me. That is why she is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room disappear around me.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had chosen me because I was outside the family.<\/p>\n<p>Someone Barbara could not easily control.<\/p>\n<p>Someone Michael could not predict.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who would eventually become connected to Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>The letter ended with one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my son meets her, I hope he understands why I trusted her before he ever did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>Tears filled his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s one more file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She played it.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Tired.<\/p>\n<p>But unmistakably calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Barbara discovers the trust, she will try to make Emily look guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>The prediction was exact.<\/p>\n<p>Richard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe will use Michael. She will use the family.
