She still kept the stuffed rabbit from childhood, although she insisted it stayed hidden in the back of her closet where nobody could see it.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon had changed too.<\/p>\n<p>He had left Sterling Holdings completely and started a small architectural practice with two former colleagues. He designed houses, schools, and community buildings rather than corporate towers. He said he liked projects where people actually knew who would live inside them.<\/p>\n<p>I was still teaching.<\/p>\n<p>My classroom walls were covered with student paintings, crooked paper sculptures, and photographs from art shows. On Fridays, Lisa sometimes stopped by after school and sat at my desk doing homework while I graded assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Our life had become ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>That was exactly what I had wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Then the envelope arrived.<\/p>\n<p>It was cream-colored.<\/p>\n<p>No return address.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across the front in careful handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Emily.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the kitchen holding the envelope while rain tapped against the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon was upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa was at school.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds I considered throwing it away.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was one sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>I have something that belongs to Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation.<\/p>\n<p>No apology.<\/p>\n<p>No request.<\/p>\n<p>Just an address.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then I called Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>He came downstairs almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I handed him the letter.<\/p>\n<p>He read it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did this arrive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hasn&#39;t contacted us in years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the address.<\/p>\n<p>It was an old storage facility outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>One we had never heard of.<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think it could be another trap?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we shouldn&#39;t go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>But neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>The name Richard still carried weight.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of the money.<\/p>\n<p>Because of everything he had left behind.<\/p>\n<p>The trust.<\/p>\n<p>The recordings.<\/p>\n<p>The blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>The warnings.<\/p>\n<p>The unanswered questions.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon picked up the letter again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if she really has something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we can have Detective Harris retrieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe retired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re still cautious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We agreed not to go alone.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, we met Barbara&#39;s attorney at the storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara herself was not there.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney carried a key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unit has remained untouched for years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho paid for it?\u201d Brandon asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t she tell us about it before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was not ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We entered.<\/p>\n<p>The unit smelled of cardboard and dust.<\/p>\n<p>There were several old boxes stacked against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Most were labeled with dates.<\/p>\n<p>One carried Richard&#39;s initials.<\/p>\n<p>R.S.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He touched the cardboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never seen this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney handed him the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside were documents.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>A few books.<\/p>\n<p>And a small wooden box.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon lifted it out.<\/p>\n<p>There was no lock.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay an old wristwatch.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s watch.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father wore this every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the watch was another letter.<\/p>\n<p>This one was addressed to Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>He unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>My son,<\/p>\n<p>If you have found this, then you already know that your mother was not the only person who made mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>I watched his eyes move across the page.<\/p>\n<p>The letter explained that Richard had suspected Michael Vance was working with someone outside the company.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who had never been identified.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had not acted alone.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had never discovered the second person&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>But he had discovered something else.<\/p>\n<p>The person had access to private information about the Sterling family.<\/p>\n<p>They knew about the trust.<\/p>\n<p>They knew about the employees&#39; accounts.<\/p>\n<p>They knew about Emily before Brandon met her.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means someone else knew about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Richard believed the second person was connected to the legal firm that handled the family trusts.<\/p>\n<p>He had planned to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>He never got the chance.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the page was a name.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Greene.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s father.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Daniel helped us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may not have known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I worked with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man pointed toward another box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were billing statements.<\/p>\n<p>Payments to Samuel Greene.<\/p>\n<p>But the payments were not from Richard.<\/p>\n<p>They came from a company we did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>The same shell company appeared in Michael&#39;s old records.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen my father&#39;s attorney was compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly,\u201d the attorney said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSterling Family Services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t a company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a private administrative entity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho controlled it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I felt anger rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe created another company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo move money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought we knew everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew what was proven,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat distinction matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was another box.<\/p>\n<p>This one contained photographs.<\/p>\n<p>One showed Barbara meeting Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Another showed Samuel Greene meeting Michael.<\/p>\n<p>A third showed a man none of us recognized.<\/p>\n<p>He was standing beside Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon took the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the back was a date.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks before Richard died.<\/p>\n<p>And one handwritten word.<\/p>\n<p>Witness.<\/p>\n<p>The word made no sense.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something.<\/p>\n<p>The man was wearing a ring.<\/p>\n<p>A distinctive black stone set in silver.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that ring before.<\/p>\n<p>Not on Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Not on Barbara.<\/p>\n<p>On the man who had delivered the envelope to Lisa at the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had left the photograph of my old apartment.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve seen him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His head snapped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I explained.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The old car.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon&#39;s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could dial, the storage facility lights went out.<\/p>\n<p>Darkness swallowed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa&#39;s old stuffed rabbit seemed to flash through my mind, absurdly, because suddenly I was thinking about all the times she had been afraid of dark rooms as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard a door slam.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We heard footsteps outside.<\/p>\n<p>One.<\/p>\n<p>Two.<\/p>\n<p>Three.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency lights came on.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney was gone.<\/p>\n<p>So was the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked at the open box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the old fear return.<\/p>\n<p>Not the fear Barbara had created.<\/p>\n<p>Something colder.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else was still protecting the secret.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever that person was had just learned that we had found it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/readstoryus.com\/?p=2587\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Man in the Old Photograph Finally Had a Name, and His Connection to Richard Explained Why the Last Secret Had Stayed Buried<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seven years passed before the letter arrived.
