Forty thousand on credit cards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the joint account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>I walked quickly to the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>My laptop was on the dresser.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The banking application loaded.<\/p>\n<p>I selected our joint account.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the transactions looked ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Then I began scrolling.<\/p>\n<p>Cash withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>Online betting charges.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts of two hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Nine it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t change what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t argue.<\/p>\n<p>For once, there was nothing he could say.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to the living room.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone had gone quiet.<\/p>\n<p>The birthday cake sat on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Blue icing spelled out Grant&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Half-empty takeout containers covered the counter.<\/p>\n<p>The decorations were still hanging.<\/p>\n<p>Everything looked absurdly ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Denise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need everyone to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>No one protested.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa gathered the children.<\/p>\n<p>Miles collected coats.<\/p>\n<p>Denise stood near the door and looked at her son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to night, I slept in the guest room.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:17 in the morning, I opened my laptop.<\/p>\n<p>I downloaded every bank statement I could access.<\/p>\n<p>Every mortgage document.<\/p>\n<p>Every credit-card statement.<\/p>\n<p>Every transaction.<\/p>\n<p>I printed everything.<\/p>\n<p>I made copies.<\/p>\n<p>I created folders.<\/p>\n<p>Then I called my sister, Mara.<\/p>\n<p>She answered on the second ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaurel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need somewhere to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll explain when I get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I packed a small suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, I stood in the bedroom doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Grant was asleep.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I remembered our wedding day.<\/p>\n<p>The way he had held my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The promises we had made.<\/p>\n<p>The plans we had discussed.<\/p>\n<p>A home.<\/p>\n<p>A family.<\/p>\n<p>A life.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered when the truth had started slipping underneath those promises.<\/p>\n<p>I left without waking him.<\/p>\n<p>Mara opened her door before I knocked twice.<\/p>\n<p>She took one look at me and pulled me into a hug.<\/p>\n<p>That was when I finally cried.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of the money.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of the house.<\/p>\n<p>Because I suddenly understood how lonely I had been while standing looked down at the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept thinking I wasn&#39;t doing enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were doing too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at
