transfers to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Chloe searching the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus following me.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor lunging toward my phone when David mentioned his father.<\/p>\n<p>The family had not been collecting sentimental belongings.<\/p>\n<p>They had been hunting evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up David\u2019s photograph again.<\/p>\n<p>The one from the blue him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both of us looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Marcus followed Sarah to my office, Eleanor knows we\u2019re moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she\u2019ll expect us to rush directly to the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA trap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel checked his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what do we do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>For eleven months I had watched illness strip away his strength while he quietly assembled this path for me.<\/p>\n<p>He had known his mother.<\/p>\n<p>He had known Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He had known they would move quickly.<\/p>\n<p>And if he knew them that well, he probably expected this too.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the envelope again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then I held it toward the desk lamp.<\/p>\n<p>A faint indentation appeared beneath my name.<\/p>\n<p>Writing pressure from another sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas handed me a pencil.<\/p>\n<p>I shaded lightly across the paper.<\/p>\n<p>Words slowly emerged.<\/p>\n<p>Not the house.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining message
