his.”

“And Mom?”

“Maybe she believed him.”

That explained something.

Eleanor’s language.

The Hayes line.

Assets that belonged to the family.

Perhaps she had never viewed the company as Jonathan’s.

Perhaps she thought her brother had been robbed and every transfer was reclamation.

I hated how human motives complicated crimes.

Eleanor could believe herself wronged and still steal.

Stephen could believe himself betrayed and still build a conspiracy.

Marcus picked up his phone.

“I’m calling Mom.”

Daniel said, “Bad idea.”

“I need to hear her answer.”

“She will lie.”

“Probably.”

He dialed anyway.

Eleanor answered on the third ring.

Marcus put the phone on speaker.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was calm.

“At home.”

“Do you remember Uncle Stephen?”

A long silence.

Then:

“What kind of question is that?”

“Did he own Meridian Biomedical?”

Another silence.

This one longer.

“Who told you that?”

“So yes.”

“Marcus.”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

“Did he introduce Bell to Dad?”

Eleanor’s voice changed.

“Where are you?”

“Answer.”

“I asked where you are.”

“Did Stephen introduce Bell?”

“Yes.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Did Stephen tell Bell to move money out of Dad’s company?”

“No.”

The answer came fast.

Too fast.

“Did you know Bell was doing it?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“I knew money was being returned.”

Thomas looked at me.

Returned.

There it was.

“What does that mean?” Marcus asked.

“Your father cheated Stephen.”

Thomas shook his head.

Eleanor continued.

“He stole the company from him.”

“That isn’t true.”

“Who told you?”

“Thomas.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Thomas protected Jonathan.”

“He reviewed the settlement.”

“He reviewed what Jonathan wanted him to review.”

Marcus rubbed his face.

“Did you take money?”

“It was not his money.”

“Did you take it?”

“I moved assets.”

“How much?”

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try me.”

Her voice hardened.

“I was fixing what your father did.”

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Did West help you?”

Silence.

“Mom?”

“No.”

“Did Raines?”

Another silence.

“Did Uncle Stephen?”

Eleanor exhaled slowly.

“Stephen wanted justice.”

“And you?”

“I wanted my family protected.”

“From Dad?”

“From what he became.”

Marcus seemed to shrink.

Then he asked the question nobody else had wanted him to ask.

“Did you know Dad had that sedative in his system?”

Everything stopped.

No answer.

Marcus’s face changed.

“Mom.”

Still nothing.

“Did you know?”

Eleanor whispered, “Who showed you that?”

Not no.

Marcus stood.

“Jesus Christ.”

“I didn’t hurt your father.”

“Then why do you know?”

“Marcus—”

“How did you know about the report?”

Silence.

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

Eleanor heard movement.

“Who is there?”

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then the call disconnected.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus sat down.

His hands shook.

Thomas said quietly, “Her knowing about the report does not prove she administered anything.”

Marcus glared at him.

“I know.”

He hated the sentence.

But he understood it now.

Daniel’s phone rang again.

This time he answered and immediately turned on the speaker.

One of his investigators had traced West’s last known activity.

A financial transaction.

Cash withdrawal.

ATM camera.

West had been with another man.

They sent the image.

Edward Raines.

Both alive.

Both together.

The location was ninety miles north.

Near the Wisconsin border.

Then the investigator added one more detail.

The vehicle they entered was registered to Vale Holdings.

Thomas stared at the photograph.

“Stephen’s company.”

Daniel nodded.

Marcus looked at the dark screen of his phone.

“Where are they going?”

I looked at my father’s ledger.

The original theft had begun with Stephen Vale.

The surviving network still carried his name.

And David had told my mother that Eleanor had not started it.

Maybe because someone else had never stopped it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Eleanor Finally Told Us What Happened Before Jonathan Died,
