her.

“What do you know?” I asked.

Wren pulled the blue paper star from her pocket.

The same star she had been carrying at school.

She opened one folded point.

Then another.

I had assumed it was a child’s craft.

It wasn’t.

Lines had been drawn inside the folds.

Coordinates.

Street names.

Numbers.

Naomi stared at it.

“Celia gave you that?”

Wren nodded.

“She said never open it unless Mara found the basement.”

I took the paper with trembling hands.

In the center, beneath the creases, Eleanor had written a single sentence.

The truth is where Mara learned to swim.

My breath caught.

I knew exactly where that was.

A cabin beside Lake Mercer.

A place my father had told me burned down when I was seven.

I looked at Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

“It didn’t burn down, did it?”

“No.”

“How many places from my childhood did you erase?”

He had no answer.

Detective Ortiz stood.

“We are not going anywhere tonight.”

Naomi shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

Ortiz’s patience vanished.

“I understand we were shot at less than an hour ago.”

“And I understand Celia designed this sequence because she expected Hale’s people to move once Mara reached the house.”

Ortiz looked at the star.

“You think Celia wants us at the lake?”

“No,” Naomi said.

“She wants Mara there.”

Daniel rose suddenly.

“No.”

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get a vote.”

“Mara, there’s something you still don’t know.”

“What now?”

His voice dropped.

“The cabin is where Eleanor disappeared.”

I froze.

“Disappeared?”

“You told me she died.”

“She didn’t die in the crash.”

I stared at him.

He looked as if saying the words physically hurt.

“She survived.”

“Then what happened?”

“We reached the cabin afterward.”

“We?”

“Eleanor, Celia, you and me.”

My mind went blank.

“I was there?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Hale found us.”

Wren’s fingers tightened around Naomi’s hand.

“And Eleanor?”

Daniel’s gaze met mine.

“She stayed behind so Celia could get you out.”

My throat closed.

“You said Celia survived.”

“She did.”

“You said you raised me afterward.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t Celia keep me?”

His eyes dropped.

“Because when we escaped, you were in my car.”

I understood before he finished.

“You took me.”

“Yes.”

“And left Celia there.”

“She was supposed to follow.”

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

I backed away from him.

“How long before she found me again?”

“Years.”

“How many?”

“Nine.”

My stomach twisted.

“You kept me hidden from my own mother for nine years?”

“Yes.”

Before I could answer, Ortiz’s phone vibrated.

She checked the screen.

Her expression sharpened.

“What?”

She turned the phone toward us.

A security-camera image showed a woman walking into Alder Creek Elementary twenty minutes earlier.

Celia.

Alive.

Alone.

Ortiz read the accompanying message.

“The school alarm was triggered. Officers searched the building. She was gone before they arrived.”

I leaned closer.

Celia’s face was clear.

In one hand she carried a red folder.

In the other, she held a sign toward the camera.

Three handwritten words.

NOT THE LAKE.

I stared at the image.

Then Wren whispered beside me.

“Mommy changed the plan.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Celia’s Warning Sent Us Away From the Lake, but the Message She Hid at My School Revealed Who Had Betrayed Her

For half a second after the basement lights went out, nobody moved.
