That notebook was never found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Celia has it, Hale would want it more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would she meet him alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause maybe she finally decided to trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wren\u2019s sleepy voice came from the attic opening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Ellie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all turned.<\/p>\n<p>She stood on the ladder, wrapped in the gray blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi rushed toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wren climbed the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy said the bad man kept Ellie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attic became silent.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWren, when did she say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly what did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wren frowned, trying to remember.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018If he still has Ellie, I can trade the book.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Eleanor might be alive?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at Wren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi whispered, \u201cCelia did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>The beach photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor standing beside Celia six weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Of course Celia knew.<\/p>\n<p>She had been with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did Hale get Eleanor after that photo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one had an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>She listened without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe traced the motel in the photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s outside Lake Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel cursed.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocal police checked the room registered to Victor Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCelia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pause that followed made my hands go cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn older woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescription.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately sixty, dark hair with gray, scar above the left eyebrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attic seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Found near Lake Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>I moved toward the ladder.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz blocked me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not driving there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to say that sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz held my gaze for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then she nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go with police escort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wren reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>I took it.<\/p>\n<p>The medal ribbon still lay across my other palm.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two years after I had been told Eleanor Bell died, I was finally going to see whether the woman from my memories had survived.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere near the same lake, Celia was missing.<\/p>\n<p>One mother had been found.<\/p>\n<p>The other might have walked willingly into the hands of the man who had destroyed our family.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/readstoryus.com\/?p=2928\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Reached the Hospital Expecting a Stranger, but the Woman in the Bed Remembered the Promise My Mother Made Me at Six<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds nobody in the conference room spoke.
