I\u2019m not leaving her alone now because everyone else thinks that\u2019s safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>No voice.<\/p>\n<p>Only wind.<\/p>\n<p>Then Celia whispered, \u201cMara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard the tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shaky breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop apologizing. Where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCelia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know about the marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound escaped Celia that was almost a sob.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Celia whispered, \u201cListen carefully. Hale isn\u2019t the person you need to fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know about Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Longer this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celia breathed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Daniel finally remembered what he spent his life pretending not to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel heard.<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCelia,\u201d I said, \u201cwhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to finish this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to spend twenty-eight years trying to find me and then disappear again before I can decide whether I want you in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped breathing for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>When she spoke, her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Then you know I\u2019m not changing my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the background, a man shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Celia whispered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth dock. Boat house three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz was already moving.<\/p>\n<p>She radioed the location.<\/p>\n<p>Police units mobilized.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel grabbed his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do maps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll recognize me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He seemed to search for something to say that would undo twenty-eight years.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing could.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he whispered, \u201cBring her back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was always your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I walked out with Detective Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>As we crossed the parking lot, my phone buzzed one final time.<\/p>\n<p>A text from Celia.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>If Vale arrives, do not let him see Wren.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Wren.<\/p>\n<p>Why would Vale care about Wren?<\/p>\n<p>I looked back toward the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi and Wren were still there.<\/p>\n<p>Safe, supposedly.<\/p>\n<p>Then the answer came with terrifying clarity.<\/p>\n<p>If Julian\u2019s missing page had survived\u2014<\/p>\n<p>maybe Celia had not hidden it in a vault.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had hidden it with someone nobody would search.<\/p>\n<p>A child.<\/p>\n<p>I called Naomi.<\/p>\n<p>She answered on the first ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck Wren\u2019s backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard movement.<\/p>\n<p>A zipper.<\/p>\n<p>Paper rustling.<\/p>\n<p>Then Naomi stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something sewn into the lining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tore fabric.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA folded ledger page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My blood went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead the first name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice became barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdrian Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she read the line beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>And everything changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayment authorized for the removal of Julian Cross, Eleanor Bell, Celia Ellis\u2014and infant Mara Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/readstoryus.com\/?p=2930\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Missing Ledger Page Put My Name Beside a Murder Order, and Suddenly Wren Became the Most Dangerous Witness in the Case<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The storage facility stood behind a row of auto-repair shops on the edge of town.
