identification from the man\u2019s wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Brennan looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned it toward us.<\/p>\n<p>The name read:<\/p>\n<p>MICHAEL CROSS.<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Cross.<\/p>\n<p>The same surname as Julian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Michael Cross?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Celia stared at the name.<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes lifted to mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian had a brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disappeared after Julian died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brennan asked, \u201cDid anyone assume he was dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-eight years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Another person erased from the story.<\/p>\n<p>Another death that had not been a death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Price keep him alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celia whispered, \u201cBecause Michael knew where Julian got the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brennan\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found something with Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sealed envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brennan\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Mara Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-eight years.<\/p>\n<p>A man missing since before I could remember.<\/p>\n<p>A letter with my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brennan hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded to an agent.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>Celia squeezed my hand once.<\/p>\n<p>I did not pull away.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later, a clear evidence sleeve was placed in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope inside was old.<\/p>\n<p>Yellowed.<\/p>\n<p>My name written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Not Eleanor\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Not Celia\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath my name were five words.<\/p>\n<p>From your father, Julian Cross.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celia covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The envelope was opened under camera.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single folded page.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first line.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter, if you are ever reading this, then I failed to make it home before you were born.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The room blurred.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had written that he knew Vale and Hale were watching him.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Price had approved \u201cremoving\u201d anyone connected to the financial records.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know whether Celia would survive.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know whether I would.<\/p>\n<p>But he had left instructions with Michael.<\/p>\n<p>One copy of the ledger would remain hidden until the network turned against itself.<\/p>\n<p>One list would identify every participant.<\/p>\n<p>And one final piece of evidence would prove who had ordered the murders.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat final evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brennan pointed toward the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n<p>I read.<\/p>\n<p>Michael knows where I left the recording of Price.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celia leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter answered.<\/p>\n<p>A meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Malcolm Price instructing Victor Hale and Adrian Vale to eliminate Julian Cross.<\/p>\n<p>And anyone tied to him.<\/p>\n<p>Including Celia.<\/p>\n<p>Including Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Including me.<\/p>\n<p>At the very bottom, Julian had written one final sentence.<\/p>\n<p>If Mara survives, tell her none of this began because she was weak enough to be used against us.<\/p>\n<p>It began because she was loved enough that none of us could leave her behind.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time all night, I cried without trying to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Not because the sentence fixed anything.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Love had caused courage.<\/p>\n<p>Love had caused cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>Love had caused lies, sacrifice, theft and survival.<\/p>\n<p>But somewhere before I was born, my father had understood that I might someday inherit the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>And he had tried to leave me one thing that was not a lie.<\/p>\n<p>Brennan\u2019s radio crackled again.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Cross was conscious.<\/p>\n<p>He had asked to speak to one person.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>I wiped my face.<\/p>\n<p>Celia looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, someone was giving me the choice before making it for me.<\/p>\n<p>I folded Julian\u2019s letter carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
