it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jake said, \u201cThen who does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>I followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his sat unopened in the attic since we moved houses.<\/p>\n<p>My heart accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>The three of us climbed the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>The attic smelled of insulation and dust.<\/p>\n<p>Jake found the cedar box beneath a stack of Christmas decorations.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Everything looked exactly as I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Pearl earrings.<\/p>\n<p>My parents\u2019 wedding head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed when he saw mine.<\/p>\n<p>He raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot to stop you.
