6 – The Signature on an Old Request Changed the Question From Why Caleb Needed Money to What He Had Been Planning

I read the signature again.

Caleb Rowe.

Three months earlier.

The request was brief.

Information concerning the Bennett Family Trust investment account.

I looked at Priya.

“Can he access it?”

“Not directly.”

“Then why request information?”

“That is what we need to establish.”

I felt a chill move through me.

Caleb had always been careful with paperwork.

He disliked leaving loose ends.

If he had made the request himself, it wasn't an accident.

Priya placed the document beside the others.

“This doesn't prove what he intended.”

“No.”

“But it proves he knew something existed.”

I nodded.

“What do we do?”

“Preserve it.”

She photographed the document and placed the original back in the folder.

Then she asked me a question I hadn't expected.

“Has Caleb ever asked you about your grandmother's estate?”

I thought back.

“He asked about the house once.”

“When?”

“About a year after we married.”

“What did he say?”

“He thought we should sell it.”

“Why?”

“He said we didn't need an empty house.”

Priya looked at me.

“Did he ask what else your grandmother left?”

“No.”

“Did you tell him?”

“I said there were some investments.”

Her expression changed.

“What exactly did you say?”

“That there were investments, but I didn't manage them personally.”

Priya nodded.

“So he knew there were investments.”

I swallowed.

“I suppose he did.”

The distinction mattered.

I had remembered the conversation as insignificant.

Now it felt like the first visible crack.

Priya opened another document.

“This request was made after that conversation.”

I stared at the date.

She was right.

The inquiry had been submitted only weeks after Caleb's company lost its largest contract.

My pulse quickened.

“Do you think he was looking for the money?”

“I think we should not guess.”

That answer was frustrating.

But it was also exactly what I needed.

Facts first.

Interpretation later.

Priya called the investment administrator.

I listened while she identified herself and requested confirmation of the inquiry.

The administrator asked several questions.

Priya answered them.

Then she turned to me.

“They confirmed the request.”

“Who submitted it?”

“Caleb.”

“Did he have authority?”

“No.”

“Then how did they receive it?”

“They said the request was submitted with documentation suggesting he was acting on your behalf.”

My mouth went dry.

“Was he?”

“No.”

Priya looked at me.

“Did you authorize him?”

“Never.”

The administrator said something else.

Priya's expression became more serious.

She ended the call.

“What?”

“The request included a copy of your signature.”

I felt as though the floor had shifted.

“My signature?”

“Yes.”

“Was it real?”

“They're reviewing it.”

I stared at my hands.

I had signed thousands of documents during our marriage.

Mortgage paperwork.

Insurance.

Business forms.

Tax returns.

I couldn't remember every signature.

“What if it was something I signed without understanding?”

“Then we need the original document.”

“And if it wasn't?”

“Then we have a much more serious issue.”

I stood.

“Caleb wouldn't forge my signature.”

Priya didn't answer.

I realized she wasn't agreeing.

She was leaving the possibility open.

I wanted to defend him.

Even now.

That frightened me.

Because part of me still wanted the man I had married to be innocent.

Not because the evidence supported him.

Because accepting the alternative meant admitting that I had misunderstood my marriage for years.

My phone rang.

Caleb.

I let it go to voicemail.

A few minutes later, he sent a message.

We need to talk about the investment.

I showed Priya.

She nodded.

“Don't respond.”

Another message appeared.

I know you have the documents.

Then:

You don't understand what you're doing.

I stared at the screen.

For the first time, the message didn't sound like anger.

It sounded like warning.

That afternoon, Priya arranged for a forensic accountant to review the financial records.

His name was Daniel Mercer.

He spent three hours at the house.

He worked quietly.

No dramatic statements.

No assumptions.

He simply traced the transfers.

By the end of the afternoon, he had identified eleven transactions that concerned him.

Four were from our joint emergency account.

Three were business payments.

Two went to Cedar Coast Events.

Two were transfers to an account I didn't recognize.

“Whose account is this?” I asked.

Daniel looked at the records.

“It's a holding account.”

“For what?”

“We don't know yet.”

Priya leaned forward.

“Can we trace it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel typed for several minutes.

Then stopped.

He looked at me.

“This account is connected to a company registered under a different name.”

“Whose?”

He hesitated.

“Caleb's.”

I felt numb.

“What company?”

“Northbridge Consulting Holdings.”

I knew the name.

Caleb had mentioned it once.

He told me it was a dormant entity used for future projects.

Apparently, it wasn't dormant.

“How much went through it?”

Daniel calculated.

“Approximately seventy-six thousand dollars over the last fourteen months.”

I closed my eyes.

“Seventy-six?”

“Yes.”

“From our accounts?”

“Partially.”

Daniel pointed to another line.

“The rest came from his operating account.”

I looked at Priya.

“What does that mean?”

“It means we need to understand what Northbridge was used for.”

Daniel continued.

“There is another issue.”

He opened a folder.

“Several payments from Northbridge went to Cedar Coast Events.”

Vivian.

The room became very quiet.

“So Caleb was paying his mother,” I said.

“Possibly,” Daniel replied.

“For what?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at the vacation brochure.

Suddenly, the forty-five-thousand-dollar trip seemed less like a family indulgence and more like a transaction I didn't yet understand.

I remembered the dates.

The deposit.

The transfers.

The investment inquiry.

The demand.

Everything was beginning to align.

But not enough.

I needed proof.

That evening, Caleb called again.

I answered.

“Hello.”

He was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Digging through everything.”

“I didn't start digging.”

“You hired people to investigate me.”

“I hired people to understand my own finances.”

“You're making me look like a criminal.”

“I haven't called you one.”

His breathing changed.

“Mara, listen to me.”

“I am.”

“I made mistakes.”

“That isn't the same as answering my questions.”

“I was trying to keep the company alive.”

“And my money?”

“I was going to replace it.”

“The investment account?”

Silence.

I waited.

“You don't understand that account.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because it's complicated.”

I almost laughed.

“Everything becomes complicated when you don't tell me the truth.”

He became quiet.

Then he said, “Your grandmother put conditions on that money.”

I froze.

“How do you know?”

Another silence.

“Mara—”

“How do you know?”

He hung up.

I stared at the phone.

Priya was sitting across from me.

“You heard that?”

“Yes.”

I played the recording.

She listened.

When it ended, she looked at Daniel.

Daniel had remained silent throughout the call.

Now he spoke.

“He knows more than he admitted.”

I nodded.

The next morning, Priya received an email from the investment administrator.

The signature on the earlier request had been examined.

It was not mine.

It was a reproduction.

The request had been rejected because the administrator had detected inconsistencies.

I read the message twice.

Then I looked at Priya.

“What happens now?”

“We preserve everything.”

“Do we confront him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because we don't yet know the full structure.”

That afternoon, another document arrived.

It was from Northbridge Consulting Holdings.

A loan agreement.

The lender was a private financing company.

The collateral listed was not Caleb's business.

It was an anticipated interest in funds from the Bennett Family Trust.

My hands began to shake.

“Can he pledge my inheritance?”

“Not legally without authority.”

“But he tried.”

Priya nodded.

“That is what this appears to show.”

I looked at the signature line.

Caleb had signed his own name.

Under it was a statement claiming that he had reasonable expectation of receiving funds from his spouse's inherited assets.

The loan amount was $250,000.

I stared at the number.

The vacation was no longer the largest problem.

Neither was the forty thousand dollars.

Caleb had apparently borrowed against money he did not own.

And if the lender believed those funds were available, then someone had told them they were.

I looked at Priya.

“Why would he need two hundred and fifty thousand dollars?”

She turned the final page.

The answer was there.

The loan had been secured four months earlier.

The first payment was already overdue.

And the lender had sent a notice demanding repayment.

Click
