the reason Marian became afraid.”

Clara looked at Adrian.

“So Marian may have been coerced.”

“Possibly.”

“And Peter?”

Elaine looked toward the door.

“Peter was the one Graham trusted most.”

Clara remembered Daniel's warning.

The strongest evidence is not on the drive.

Inside your father's private office.

She stood.

“We need the original authorization.”

Elaine immediately shook her the old family house.”

Clara's pulse quickened.

The house had been closed for years.

Her grandfather's old estate.

Nobody lived there anymore.

“What part of the house?”

Elaine closed her eyes.

“The library.”

Clara understood.

The photograph.

The notebook.

The storage unit.

Everything had been pointing toward places her grandfather had used.

Before Clara could leave, Elaine grabbed her hand.

“There's one thing you need to know.”

“What?”

“Your father isn't afraid of the money.”

Clara waited.

“He's afraid of what happens if the original authorization is found.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains another it?”

“No.”

“Then why is your signature there?”

“I don't know.”

The answer was almost a whisper.

“Someone forged mine too.”

Clara stared at her.

For the first time, she understood that the fraud was larger than she had imagined.

They had not forged only Clara's signature.

They had created an entire false history.

A history in which everyone appeared to agree.

Her father had built his control on signatures that never belonged to the people whose names appeared beneath them.

Adrian took Clara's hand.

“We need to find that document.”

Elaine nodded.

“But be
