the property.

The house looked exactly as Clara remembered it.

Tall windows.

Stone walls.

An overgrown garden.

A front door that had not been opened in years.

Clara had spent childhood summers there.

She remembered her grandfather reading beside the fireplace.

She remembered Sophie running through the halls.

She remembered Graham telling everyone that the house represented the strength of the family.

Now it looked abandoned.

Adrian parked away from the entrance.

“We walk from here.”

Clara nodded.

Neither wanted headlights announcing their arrival.

They crossed the garden.

The side door opened with an old key June had given them.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and wood.

Clara switched on her flashlight.

“Library.”

They moved through the corridor.

Every step brought back another memory.

A staircase where she had fallen at seven.

A portrait of her grandfather.

A cabinet where family photographs had once stood.

Then they reached the library.

The door was locked.

Adrian examined it.

“New lock.”

Clara frowned.

“Someone has been here.”

He opened it carefully.

The library was enormous.

Shelves covered every wall.

Old books filled them.

The desk stood beneath a large window.

Clara approached.

She remembered sitting there while her grandfather taught her how to read financial statements.

She had forgotten that.

Or perhaps she had tried to.

Adrian examined the desk.

“Anything familiar?”

Clara ran her fingers across the wood.

Then stopped.

“There.”

A tiny indentation beneath the drawer.

Her grandfather had a habit of hiding small objects beneath the desk.

She pulled the drawer.

Nothing.

She pressed the indentation.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a key.

And a note.

Clara unfolded it.

If the document is moved, follow the blue line.

Adrian looked around.

“Blue line?”

Clara scanned the room.

There were hundreds of books.

Then she saw it.

A thin blue mark along the bottom of one shelf.

She followed it.

The mark continued behind several shelves and ended at a large painting.

Her grandfather's portrait.

Clara stared.

“Of course.”

Adrian removed the painting.

Behind it was a small safe.

The key fit.

Inside was a folder.

Clara's hands trembled as she opened it.

The original authorization.

The independence clause.

The transfer agreement.

And the signatures.

Clara's.

Her mother's.

Her grandfather's.

All three.

Adrian examined them.

“These are originals.”

Clara turned the pages.

Then she saw the final section.

A handwritten amendment.

The foundation would transfer completely to Clara if any attempt were made to restrict her independence through fraudulent documentation.

Clara looked at Adrian.

“That means the fraud activates the transfer.”

“Yes.”

Her father had built the mechanism that could ultimately destroy his own control.

Because he had assumed nobody would ever find the original documents.

Clara felt a strange calm.

Then she noticed another paper.

It was a letter from her grandfather.

He had written that if the family ever reached this point, Clara should not fight Graham alone.

She should expose the entire structure publicly through the proper legal channels.

No revenge.

No threats.

Only truth.

Adrian read it.

“He knew this might happen.”

Clara nodded.

“Maybe he knew Graham would eventually make a mistake.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Both froze.

Footsteps.

Someone was inside the house.

Adrian closed the folder.

“Hide.”

They moved behind the shelves.

The footsteps grew louder.

A figure entered the library.

Clara recognized him immediately.

Peter Lang.

He walked toward the desk.

He searched the drawers.

Then he spoke into his phone.

“It's gone.”

Clara looked at Adrian.

Peter continued.

“Yes.
