the kitchen.

“We need to discuss the wedding.”

I looked at Dad.

He avoided my eyes.

“Not now,” I said.

Natalie followed me as I walked toward the kitchen.

“You keep avoiding this conversation.”

“Because we've already had it.”

“You haven't agreed.”

“No.”

“Exactly.”

I stopped.

“Because I can't.”

She lowered her voice.

“You don't care about Brooke.”

That accusation was so unfair that for a second I couldn't answer.

“I have spent years making things for this family.”

“And now you're keeping score?”

“No.”

“Then prove it.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“Make the cake.”

“I already told you what it costs.”

“You have money.”

I laughed once, without humor.

“The money you think I have is the money I've saved to open my business.”

Natalie crossed her arms.

“You can replace it later.”

“That's not how a business works.”

“You're making this far more complicated than it needs to be.”

“No,” I said. “You're making my work invisible.”

Dad finally spoke.

“Claire, just make the cake.”

I turned toward him.

“My client is picking up a $4,650 order in less than two hours.”

He glanced at the beautiful.”

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“Is that the cake for your client?”

“Yes.”

“How much did they pay?”

“That's none of your business.”

She smiled faintly.

“You can charge them $4,650, but you won't make your own sister's cake?”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Because they are a client.”

“Family should matter more.”

“Family should also respect boundaries.”

Natalie walked toward the cake.

I stepped in front of it.

“Don't touch it.”

She stopped.

“I wasn't going to.”

“Good.”

Dad sighed.

“Enough.”

I looked at him.

“No. Not this time.”

He stared at me.

“You've been saying that every time we ask you for something.”

“Because nobody listens the first time.”

Natalie gave a small laugh.

“You've become very dramatic.”

I picked up my phone.

“I have a pickup scheduled.”

She stepped closer.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“You're really going to let your sister get married without a cake made by you?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

Her expression hardened.

“Fine.”

She turned away.

I thought the argument was over.

I was wrong.

Twenty minutes later, I was upstairs grabbing the invoice folder when I heard a crash.

It was not the sound of a plate breaking.

It was heavier.

Much heavier.

I ran downstairs.

The kitchen door was open.

The cake was on the floor.

For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Ivory frosting covered the tile.

One of the sugar roses lay crushed beneath a chair.

The top tier had split open.

The middle tier had collapsed sideways.

My hands went cold.

Natalie stood near the counter.

Dad was behind her.

I stared at the wreckage.

“What happened?”

Natalie lifted both hands.

“It slipped.”

I looked at her.

“What slipped?”

“The stand.”

I crouched beside the cake.

The stand was still upright on the counter.

My eyes moved from the stand to Natalie.

“No.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“The stand didn't slip.”

Dad stepped forward.

“Claire, calm down.”

I looked at him.

“Don't tell me to calm down.”

He stopped.

I touched the bottom tier.

The cardboard support beneath it was bent.

Someone had pulled it sideways.

I knew because I had built the support myself.

I looked up.

“Natalie.”

“It was an accident.”

“You touched it.”

“I was trying to move it.”

“Why?”

“To make room.”

“There was plenty of room.”

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“Claire.”

I stood.

“That cake was worth $4,650.”

Natalie folded her arms.

“You're acting like I destroyed a priceless painting.”

“I spent two days making it.”

“And you can make another.”

I stared at her.

My voice came out quiet.

“No.”

She blinked.

“No?”

“I can't make another one in forty minutes.”

“You have extra ingredients.”

“Not extra tiers.”

She shrugged.

“Then tell your client there was a problem.”

I looked at the clock.

Forty-eight minutes.

That was all.

Vanessa had arranged pickup for a precise window because the event venue had a strict delivery schedule.

If I missed it, I would lose more than money.

I could lose the client.

I could lose the opportunity.

I could lose the one commission that might have introduced Claire's Table to a much larger market.

Dad approached me.

“You're overreacting.”

I turned toward him.

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

I pointed to the floor.

“Look at it.”

He looked.

“Things happen.”

“Things don't happen like this.”

His expression changed.

“What are you accusing us of?”

I looked at Natalie.

She said nothing.

Then Dad said the sentence I would remember for years.

“This is partly your fault.”

I couldn't believe what I'd heard.

“My fault?”

“You knew there would be tension over Brooke's wedding.”

“That doesn't mean someone gets to destroy my order.”

“You should have just agreed to make her cake.”

I stared at him.

“So because I said no, this is my fault?”

He didn't answer.

Natalie stepped in.

“That's not what he meant.”

“It is exactly what he meant.”

She shook her head.

“You've become so focused on your business that you've forgotten your family.”

I looked at the ruined cake.

“No.”

I swallowed.

“I think I've spent too long forgetting myself.”

Neither of them spoke.

Then the doorbell rang.

I froze.

Vanessa.

Forty-two minutes remained.

I had no time to cry.

No time to argue.

No time to decide whether I was being treated fairly.

I had a cake to save.

I grabbed a towel and began lifting the broken pieces.

Natalie watched.

“What are you doing?”

“Working.”

“You can't save that.”

“Maybe not all of it.”

Dad sighed.

“Claire.”

I ignored him.

I removed the damaged buttercream with a palette knife.

The bottom tier had survived.

The middle tier was cracked but usable.

The top was gone.

I opened the freezer.

Two sponge layers were stacked inside.

Backup.

I always kept backup.

Vanessa had once told me that professional bakers weren't the people who never made mistakes.

They were the people who planned for mistakes before they happened.

I had never expected the mistake to be made by someone else.

The doorbell rang again.

This time, I heard Vanessa call from the hallway.

“Claire?”

I looked up.

She walked into the kitchen.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes moved from me to the floor.

Then to Natalie.

Then back to me.

“What happened?”

Natalie answered before I could.

“It was an accident.”

Vanessa looked at me.

I shook my head.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

“It wasn't.”

Dad stepped forward.

“Let's not make this bigger than it needs to be.”

Vanessa looked at him.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't need to.

“I paid Claire for a commissioned cake.”

Her gaze returned to the wreckage.

“I didn't pay for a family disagreement.”

Nobody answered.

Vanessa walked toward the table.

She examined the broken tiers.

Then she looked at the clock.

“How long?”

I swallowed.

“Forty-two minutes.”

“Can you save it?”

I looked at the cake.

Then at the backup sponge.

Then at the flowers scattered across the floor.

“I don't know.”

Vanessa nodded.

“That's not what I asked.”

I looked at her.

She pointed toward the clock.

“How much can you save?”

Something shifted inside me.

For the first time that morning, I stopped seeing a destroyed cake.

I saw components.

The bottom tier.

The surviving flowers.

The backup sponge.

The buttercream.

The structure.

The things that remained.

I picked up my apron.

“I can save the bottom.”

Vanessa nodded.

“The middle?”

“I can rebuild it.”

“And the top?”

I looked at the empty space where it had been.

“The original top is gone.”

“Can you replace it?”

I took a breath.

“Yes.”

Vanessa rolled up her sleeves.

“Then let's work.”

<a
