Her lawyer's information was there. Witness signatures were there. Nothing looked improvised.

But beneath the formal language were personal instructions.

She wanted the property sold only if I chose to sell it.

She wanted part of the the pages.

“What do you mean?”

She took a breath.

“I want you to know everything.”

Jeremy closed his eyes.

Lacey gentle.

“You know what you did.”

That sentence hurt because it was true.

“I remember.”

“You were twenty.”

“So were you.”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“And we were both young enough to think losing someone meant losing everything.”

I looked down.

“I took him from you.”

“You pursued him.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I loved him.”

“Yes.”

“But years in my mind as the woman whose life I had ruined.

Now she was telling me I had not been powerful enough to ruin it.

That was harder to accept than anger.

“I couldn't watch me go through treatment alone.”

“And the insurance?”

“That was part of it.”

She nodded.

“But it wasn't the whole reason.”

I turned to Jeremy.

“What was the whole reason?”

He didn't answer.

Lacey did.

“I asked him for a promise.”

Jeremy looked at her.

“Lace.”

She shook her head.

“She deserves to know.”

Then she looked at me.

“I asked him to make sure you would never hear about me from someone else.”

I frowned.

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“He thought keeping it secret was protecting you.”

I looked at Jeremy.

“You knew I would rather know.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You should have known then.”

He lowered his head.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you'd leave.”

The honesty of the answer me.

“I thought you would see twenty-two years disappear.”

I swallowed.

“And instead you made me discover it at the courthouse.”

“I know.”

Lacey's voice came softly from the bed.

“That is why I wrote the will.”

I looked at her.

“To punish him?”

“No.”

“To punish me?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I wanted to leave something behind that forced the truth into the open.”

She touched the thin gold ring on her finger.

“I don't want to die carrying secrets.”

I looked at Jeremy.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Lacey's expression changed.

She looked tired.

Very tired.

The color had drained from her face.

Jeremy moved toward the bed.

“Do you need the nurse?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She closed her eyes for several seconds.

Then she whispered, “The doctor told me I may only have days.”

My chest tightened.

“How many?”

“He didn't give me a number.”

Jeremy took her hand.

She squeezed it.

“I know what my body is telling me.”

I sat down.

The woman I had once imagined arguing with in a grocery store was now counting her remaining days.

Suddenly the courthouse seemed very far away.

The anger was still there.

So was the betrayal.

But death had entered the room, and it made everything else quieter.

Lacey opened her eyes.

“I want to ask both of you something.”

Jeremy nodded.

“What?”

“I want one last ceremony.”

I frowned.

“What kind?”

“A goodbye.”

I didn't understand.

She smiled.

“I want both of you there.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want to die believing I caused the two of you to spend the rest of your lives hurting each other.”

I looked at Jeremy.

He looked at me.

Neither of us knew what to say.

Lacey reached for my hand.

I hesitated.

Then I took it.

Her fingers were cold.

So thin.

She closed her hand around mine.

“I was angry with you for twenty-two years.”

“I know.”

“I don't think I'm angry anymore.”

I swallowed.

“I was angry with you too.”

“I know.”

“And I'm sorry.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“So am I.”

We stayed like that.

Three people tied together by one man, one old wound, one secret marriage, and years neither of us could recover.

Two days later, Lacey asked to leave the hospital.

The doctors objected.

She refused to change her mind.

Jeremy arranged private medical transport.

I went with them.

We drove to a small chapel outside Nashville.

It wasn't elaborate.

White walls.

Wooden benches.

A simple cross above the altar.

Sunlight filtered through colored glass and fell across the floor in pale shapes.

Lacey sat in a wheelchair.

Jeremy stood beside her.

I took a seat in the front row.

A pastor approached.

He looked at all three of us but asked no questions.

Lacey had already explained what she wanted.

Jeremy removed his wedding ring.

Lacey removed hers.

She placed both in his palm.

Then she looked at me.

“Jill.”

I stood.

She held out her hand.

I walked toward her.

She placed both rings in my palm.

I stared at them.

“I don't want to die holding something that belongs to someone else,” she said.

“This belongs to you.”

She smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Then she turned toward Jeremy.

“Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“Go home.”

His face broke.

“Not tomorrow.”

She looked at him.

“Today.”

I felt tears slide down my cheeks.

“Take care of her,” she told him.

Jeremy looked at me.

“I will.”

Then Lacey turned toward me.

“And you.”

“What?”

“Don't spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for being twenty years old.”

I couldn't speak.

I had carried that guilt longer than I had carried almost anything else.

She squeezed my hand.

“You were young.”

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

Her smile was tired but genuine.

“But you didn't destroy my life.”

I cried.

“Who did?”

Lacey looked at Jeremy.

He lowered his head.

“No one,” she said.

Then she smiled.

“Life did.”

The pastor finished the prayer.

Lacey closed her eyes.

For the first time since I had entered her hospital room, her face looked peaceful.

She died four days later.

Jeremy was beside her.

I was there too.

She never woke.

Her breathing became slower.

One breath.

Then another.

Then nothing.

Jeremy held her hand.

I stood on the other side of the bed.

For several minutes, neither of us moved.

Then he whispered her name.

“Goodbye, Lace.”

I placed my hand over hers.

“Goodbye.”

I didn't say goodbye to my rival.

There was no rival left.

There was only a woman whose life had intersected with mine in ways neither of us could have predicted.

A woman who had loved my husband.

A woman I had once blamed for my own choices.

A woman who had forgiven me before I knew how to forgive myself.

Her funeral was small, just as she had requested.

Jeremy gave the eulogy.

His voice shook.

He spoke about Nashville.

About the girl Lacey had been.

About the years they had lost.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Lacey taught me something I should have understood much earlier.”

He paused.

“Love is never a good reason to lie.”

The room went still.

He continued.

“She asked me to marry her because she was afraid of dying alone.”

His voice broke.

“But while I was trying to protect one person, I hurt another.”

His eyes met mine.

“My wife.”

I cried.

Not because everything had been repaired.

It hadn't.

But because, for the first time, Jeremy had told the truth where other people could hear it.

Three months passed.

I didn't leave him immediately.

But I didn't pretend the marriage was unchanged.

We began counseling.

We separated our finances.

I asked for complete access to everything.

He agreed.

We talked about Lacey.

We talked about the pregnancy.

We talked about Evelyn.

We talked about the Tuesdays and every lie Jeremy had told himself was necessary.

There were days when I hated him.

There were days when I missed him while sitting across the room from him.

Some nights I slept in the guest room.

Other nights I stayed beside him.

Trust did not return because Lacey had died.

It did not return because Jeremy had confessed.

It had to be rebuilt.

Slowly.

Honestly.

And one afternoon, months after the funeral, I found the two wedding rings in the small wooden box on my dresser.

I lifted them out.

For years, I had thought the hardest part of marriage was keeping two people together.

I was beginning to understand that sometimes the harder task was deciding what truth the marriage could survive.

Jeremy came into the room.

He stopped when he saw the rings.

“What are you doing?”

I looked at him.

“Something Lacey asked me to do.”

“What?”

I closed my fingers around the rings.

“I'm deciding what belongs in our future.”

He stood quietly.

This time, I didn't ask him to explain.

There were no more secrets I was willing to accept.

And there was no longer another woman standing between us.

There was only the truth.

For the first time in twenty-two years, that was going to have to be enough.

<a
