mean?”

“It means we went to his residence.”

“And?”

“No one was there.”

My stomach tightened.

Morris continued.

“His passport is gone.”

Laura, standing outside the room, heard him.

She opened the door.

“He ran.”

“Possibly.”

Morris turned toward her.

“Ms. Kim, you need to come with us.”

“Why?”

“Because if Caldwell is leaving, there are people he may believe can identify what he did.”

Laura’s face went pale.

I thought about the laptop.

The forged notebook.

The hidden contracts.

Then my phone vibrated.

A text from an unknown number.

One photograph.

My Bugatti.

Parked outside the Lake Washington house.

Taken minutes earlier.

Underneath were six words.

You should have stayed in the basement.

I stared at the screen.

Miranda saw my face.

“What?”

I turned the phone toward her.

Morris took it.

The room changed instantly.

“Is anyone at that house?”

“No.”

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Two.”

He handed the phone to Shah.

“Call local field office.”

Then he looked at me.

“You’re not going home.”

I almost corrected him.

Which home?

But the joke died before it formed.

Whoever sent the message knew where I lived.

Knew the car.

Knew enough of my family history to understand exactly what the basement meant.

And if Caldwell had disappeared, either he was closer than the FBI believed—

or somebody else inside Vanguard had never been investigated at all.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Threat Against Me Exposed the Person Caldwell Had Been Protecting, and My
