using Cynthia’s manipulation to erase my choices.”

I looked at him.

That sounded painful.

And necessary.

“You were drinking.”

“I chose to drink.”

“She lied.”

“I chose not to verify.”

“She pressured you.”

“I chose the easier version.”

He looked at me.

“I have to own what belongs to me.”

I thought of Brandon.

You have to tell the truth. That’s different.

Maybe all of us were learning the same thing.

Dad leaned against the truck.

“Your mother knew I took the money.”

“Yes.”

“She died knowing.”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“I always hoped she didn’t.”

I said nothing.

There was no kind lie available.

After a moment he whispered, “I loved her.”

“I know.”

“I was trying to save her.”

“I know.”

“That doesn’t make what I did right.”

“No.”

His eyes filled.

I looked away because some grief needed privacy even when truth did not.

Evelyn called twenty minutes later.

Samuel’s attorney had already contacted her.

That surprised me.

“He’s moving quickly,” she said.

“Because he’s scared.”

“Fear makes excellent calendars.”

I almost smiled.

“He says he has photographs of Elena’s statement.”

“I know.”

“I want the originals located legally.”

“Can investigators get into Cynthia’s storage?”

“If there is sufficient probable cause and law enforcement chooses that route.”

“What if she destroys things?”

“We request preservation immediately.”

Dad said, “Do it.”

Evelyn continued.

“Samuel is also offering account records.”

“That’s good.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“But cooperation does not erase liability.”

“I don’t care what happens to him.”

Evelyn paused.

“You may later.”

“Why?”

“Because if he is the clearest witness against Cynthia, his credibility matters.”

I hated that.

Justice was already becoming less emotionally satisfying than I had imagined.

Witnesses could be guilty.

Victims could have made mistakes.

Documents could contain truths that helped people I disliked.

The real version of events would not arrange itself into clean moral categories for me.

By late afternoon, Samuel’s attorney sent the photographs.

I opened them at Dad’s kitchen table.

Mom’s handwriting.

Different paper from Cynthia’s fake letter.

Dated.

Witnessed.

One paragraph described the unauthorized trust withdrawal.

Another said Dad admitted taking the funds for treatment.

Then came the sentence that made my throat close.

Daniel acted out of fear, not greed, but fear can damage a child’s future just as surely as greed if no one stops it.

Dad read it beside me.

He covered his mouth.

I continued.

Mom wrote that she still loved him.

She also wrote that love did not make him a safe sole trustee.

That was why she wanted Margaret and Rebecca involved.

Not to punish him.

To protect me from his tendency to choose peace, hope, or desperation over confrontation.

Dad sat down.

“She knew me.”

“Yes.”

“Better than I knew myself.”

Maybe.

I did not say it.

The last line was not about money.

It was about me.

Maya should never have to become suspicious in order to be safe.

I stared at the sentence until the words blurred.

I had become exactly that.

A person who documented conversations.

Backed up screenshots.

Recorded dates.

Protected memories with evidence.

Not because I was naturally suspicious.

Because no one else had protected the truth.

Dad whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I folded the printed copy.

“I know.”

This time, the words felt different.

Not forgiveness.

But no longer rejection.

Evelyn called again near sunset.

Police had accepted the initial fraud report.

An investigator would contact us.

Samuel’s attorney agreed to preserve the investment account.

Cynthia had not responded to a formal request through counsel.

Then Evelyn said, “There is another development.”

I closed my eyes.

“Of course there is.”

“The original deed transfer packet includes a witness signature we did not have on the county copy.”

“Who?”

“Rebecca.”

My eyes opened.

“Aunt Rebecca witnessed the forged deed?”

“Yes.”

Dad stood.

“That makes no sense.”

“I agree.”

“Did she know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Call her.”

I did.

Rebecca answered after two rings.

When I told her, she went silent.

Then she whispered, “I never witnessed a deed.”

The room went still.

“Is that your signature?”

“I need to see it.”

I sent the image.

She received it.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then a minute.

“Rebecca?”

Her voice returned.

“It looks like mine.”

My chest tightened.

“Did you sign blank papers?”

Silence.

That was enough.

“When?”

She began crying.

“Four years ago.”

“Who gave them to
