The chairs were bolted together. A vending machine hummed near the elevators.

Nothing about the place looked dramatic enough for the amount of damage being discussed inside it.

Cynthia had arrived twenty minutes earlier with an attorney.

I had only seen her once.

She walked past us without stopping.

Her face looked different.

No makeup.

Hair pulled back.

No polished expression designed to make irritation look like patience.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked tired before anybody said anything to her.

Dad watched her disappear through a secure door.

Then he looked at the floor.

“You don’t have to stay.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You already gave your statement.”

“I know.”

“They may not need you today.”

“I know.”

He glanced at me.

“Then why are you here?”

“Because I’m done hearing what happened through other people.”

He nodded.

That answer made sense to both of us now.

Brandon arrived ten minutes later.

He wore the same jacket he had worn the night my laptop broke.

That felt like another lifetime.

“Where’s Mason?”

“With Tessa.”

“How is he?”

“Fine.”

“And you?”

He gave me a tired smile.

“Less fine.”

Dad shifted so Brandon could sit.

For a while, nobody talked.

Then Brandon said, “Mom called me last night.”

I looked over.

“You answered?”

“Yes.”

“What did she want?”

“To explain.”

Dad laughed quietly.

“That word again.”

Brandon looked at him.

“She said she never meant to keep the apartment.”

I crossed my arms.

“She kept it four years.”

“I told her that.”

“What did she say?”

“That she was fixing things.”

“By borrowing against it.”

“I told her that too.”

“And?”

“She said she had a plan to restore everything before you moved.”

I stared at him.

“Did you believe her?”

“No.”

He hesitated.

“Not exactly.”

“That sounds like partly.”

“Maybe.”

I looked away.

Brandon continued.

“She said once Dad took trust money for Elena’s treatment, she stopped believing he should control anything.”

Dad nodded slowly.

“She isn’t wrong about that part.”

“No.”

“But she also said when Mom gave her that protective role, she took it seriously.”

I turned back.

“Protective role means report Dad if he did it again.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t mean forge signatures.”

“I know.”

“Or move property.”

“I know.”

“Or decide I was too immature for my own inheritance.”

“I know.”

Brandon rubbed his hands together.

“She said she thought if she gave you everything at eighteen, you would use it badly.”

My stomach tightened.

“She barely knew me.”

“She thought she did.”

“That might be the most Cynthia thing you’ve ever said.”

He almost smiled.

Then he looked down again.

“She said she planned to transfer the apartment after you finished this semester.”

“That matches the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And the money?”

“She said she was replacing it.”

Dad looked at him.

“With money from what?”

“Samuel’s investments.”

“So she stole from Maya, invested it, used part for your business, paid personal debts, and planned to return enough later that nobody noticed.”

Brandon flinched.

“When you say it like that—”

“How else should I say it?”

He did not answer.

The secure door opened.

Evelyn came out.

She carried a legal pad.

“They want Maya.”

Dad stood.

“So do I.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not yet.”

He looked toward the door.

“I don’t like her going in there alone.”

I touched his arm.

“I’m twenty-two.”

He looked at me.

Then, unexpectedly, smiled.

“Yes.”

The investigator introduced herself as Lena Morris.

She had already spoken to me once by phone, but this was the first time we met.

She was direct without being cold.

Cynthia sat across the table with her attorney.

For a moment our eyes met.

Then Lena said, “Maya, Cynthia has indicated she wants to make a statement in your presence.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She nodded slightly.

“You do not need to respond,” Lena continued. “You may leave whenever you want.”

I sat.

Cynthia’s attorney whispered something to her.

Cynthia shook her head.

Then she looked at me.

“I should have told you.”

I waited.

“That is the first thing.”

“Okay.”

“I should have told you about the apartment.”

“Yes.”

“And the account.”

“Yes.”

“And your mother’s instructions.”

“Yes.”

Each answer seemed to make her more uncomfortable because I was not fighting.

She had always been strongest inside arguments.

Facts left less room.

“I believed your father would mishandle the trust again.”

Dad was not in the room.

That helped.

I could listen without defending him.

“He did before.”

“Yes.”

“Mom knew.”

“Yes.”

“And Mom gave you limited authority to report him.”

“Yes.”

“So why didn’t you report him if he did something else?”

“He didn’t.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“After Elena died, Daniel did not misuse the trust again.”

“Then why intervene?”

Cynthia looked down at her hands.

“Because I didn’t trust that he wouldn’t.”

There it was.

Not an event.

A prediction.

“You took control because you thought Dad might do something.”

“Yes.”

“You forged documents because he might misuse them someday.”

Her attorney shifted.

Cynthia continued anyway.

“I believed the property needed to be removed from his control.”

“Why not go to Margaret?”

“She would have stopped me.”

“Because you weren’t allowed to do it.”

“Yes.”

The honesty almost unsettled me more than denial.

“Why Samuel?”

“He understood what I was trying to do.”

“Did he?”

“He understood Daniel was weak.”

“Dad being weak doesn’t make fraud legal.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

That answer changed the room.

Lena wrote something.

I asked, “Why did you put the property in your name?”

“So I could manage it.”

“Why not mine?”

“You were eighteen.”

“I was legally an adult.”

“You were not financially independent.”

“That wasn’t your decision.”

“I believed it was my responsibility.”

“Mom didn’t give you that responsibility.”

“No.”

Cynthia’s voice dropped.

“I took it.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because someone had to.”

The old Cynthia flashed through.

The certainty.

The assumption that if she believed a role needed filling, she had earned the right to fill it.

I leaned back.

“Did it ever occur to you that nobody asked you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Later.”

“How much later?”

She did not answer.

I knew.

After the mortgage.

After Brandon’s business.

After Samuel’s investments.

After control had become useful.

“Why borrow against the apartment?”

“Because there were debts.”

“Yours.”

“Some.”

“Samuel’s.”

“Some.”

“Brandon’s business.”

“Yes.”

“My property became the answer to everybody’s problems except mine.”

Her face tightened.

“That is not how I saw it.”

“How did you see it?”

“As temporary.”

I almost laughed.

“Temporary theft.”

Her attorney objected quietly.

Lena said, “Maya may describe her understanding.”

Cynthia looked at me.

“I thought I could restore it.”

“Did you always plan to?”

“Yes.”

“Even when you moved money through Samuel’s account?”

“Yes.”

“Even when you hid everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even when you told me I should be grateful to live with Dad?”

She flinched.

“That wasn’t about the property.”

“It was to me.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“That’s the problem.”

My voice remained quiet.

“You made decisions about my life without knowing what they meant to me.”

She looked down.

“I thought you needed discipline.”

“You thought you owned the timetable.”

“Yes.”

Again, no defense.

Just the truth.

I had expected satisfaction if Cynthia ever admitted what she had done.

Instead I felt tired.

“Why Brandon?”

She looked toward the door as though he might be visible through it.

“He needed help.”

“So did I.”

“You were more capable.”

The sentence landed strangely.

Not kinder.

Worse.

“So because I was capable, I got less.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“It is exactly what happened.”

She closed her eyes.

“Brandon struggled.”

“And therefore you used my assets to make his life easier.”

“I believed I would replace everything.”

“But you didn’t ask me.”

“No.”

“You never asked whether I wanted to help him.”

“No.”

“You just decided I should.”

“Yes.”

I thought about every babysitting demand.

Every interruption.

Every assumption that my time belonged to whoever needed it more.

The inheritance was not a separate problem.

It was the largest version of the same pattern.

Cynthia had never understood a boundary she disagreed with.

I said, “The night before my anatomy final, you told me family needed help.”

She looked at me.

“You remember.”

“Yes.”

“You thought Brandon needing a night out mattered more than my exam.”

“I was angry.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You believed the same thing then that you believed about the apartment.”

She stared.

“If I had something someone else needed, you thought you had the right to give it away.”

Her face
