hours.

She was carrying a paper bag from the bakery I used to own.

For a second, seeing that familiar white bag almost made me smile.

Then I noticed the expression on her face.

She looked tired, but not worried.

Focused.

“Good morning, Mom.”

“Morning.”

“I brought you breakfast.”

“I don't think I'm allowed to eat that yet.”

“Oh.”

She placed the bag on the chair.

“Then I'll keep it here.”

She came closer.

“How did you sleep?”

“Poorly.”

“I knew it.”

She sat down.

“Did you have any more chest pain?”

“A little.”

She nodded.

“That's why we need to get everything organized.”

There it was again.

Organized.

That had become her favorite word.

I watched her take out her phone.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling the bank.”

I sat upright.

“Why?”

“To find out why your transfer didn't go through.”

My stomach tightened.

She froze.

Then slowly looked at me.

“I didn't say anything about a transfer.”

Neither did I.

The room suddenly seemed very quiet.

Ellen's face changed.

“You must have heard me talking to someone.”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“I was going to ask them about your account.”

“You already tried.”

She looked away.

“Mom, you don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She stood.

“You're sick.”

“I am.”

“You're frightened.”

“Yes.”

“And you're becoming suspicious of everyone.”

I looked directly at her.

“Not everyone.”

She said nothing.

I reached for the call button.

Ellen immediately stopped me.

“Don't.”

That one word came too quickly.

I pressed it.

A nurse arrived a few minutes later.

Ellen stepped back.

“Everything is fine.”

The nurse looked between us.

“Mrs. Miller?”

“I need to speak with someone privately.”

Ellen's expression tightened.

“Mom—”

“Privately.”

The nurse nodded.

“Ms. Miller, could you wait outside for a moment?”

Ellen stared at me.

Then she walked out.

The moment the door closed, I whispered to the nurse.

“I don't feel safe with my daughter handling my belongings.”

The nurse's face became serious.

“I'll make a note of that.”

When she left, I lay back.

I felt exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

There is a particular kind of pain that comes when the person you once protected becomes someone you have to protect yourself from.

I had spent thirty-five years giving Ellen what I could.

College tuition.

Her first car.

Help with her wedding.

Money for a down payment.

Babysitting when her children were young.

Whenever she called, I answered.

Whenever she needed something, I found a way.

I never kept a ledger.

I never expected repayment.

I only expected that my daughter would still see me as her mother when I grew old.

Instead, she had started looking at me like an obstacle.

Around noon, a police officer came into the room.

He was accompanied by a woman wearing a dark suit.

Ellen entered behind them.

Her expression changed when she saw the woman.

“Who is that?”

The woman placed a folder on the small table.

“Sarah Whitmore.”

Ellen looked at me.

“You know her?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Sarah sat beside the bed.

“I've been representing your mother regarding her financial and property affairs.”

Ellen laughed nervously.

“Representing her?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Sarah looked at her calmly.

“That is something your mother can discuss with you if she chooses.”

Ellen's jaw tightened.

“You've been hiding things from me.”

I shook my head.

“I've been keeping things private.”

“I'm your daughter.”

“I know.”

“You should trust me.”

I looked at her.

“I used to.”

The police officer remained near the door.

Ellen noticed him.

“Why is a police officer here?”

Sarah answered.

“Because your mother contacted us.”

“When?”

“Twenty-two minutes ago.”

Ellen stared at me.

I said nothing.

The officer looked down at his notes.

“Mrs. Miller, I need to confirm something.”

I nodded.

“Did Ms. Miller take your phone?”

“Yes.”

“Did she use your finger to unlock it?”

“Yes.”

“Did she attempt to access your bank account?”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell you she intended to transfer approximately two hundred thousand dollars?”

I looked at Ellen.

She was staring at me.

Not pleading.

Warning.

I answered.

“Yes.”

Her face went pale.

“You're doing this to me?”

I frowned.

“You did it to yourself.”

“You called the police on me?”

“I called for help.”

“I'm your daughter!”

“And I am still your mother.”

Her voice cracked.

“You're treating me like a criminal.”

I said nothing.

Sarah opened her folder.

Inside were copies of bank records, property records, and documents I had never shown Ellen.

She placed one sheet on the table.

“Let's start with the house.”

Ellen stared at it.

“What about the house?”

“The deed remains entirely in your mother's name.”

Ellen blinked.

“But she agreed to transfer it.”

I looked at her.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“No.”

“You told me I would have it.”

“I told you I wanted you to have a home someday.”

“That is the same thing.”

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

“But it isn't the same thing.”

Sarah turned another page.

“Two months ago, someone submitted paperwork attempting to transfer ownership.”

The officer looked up.

“Was the transfer completed?”

“No.”

Sarah slid a copy toward him.

“The signature was determined not to be authentic.”

Ellen stared at the paper.

“I didn't do that.”

Nobody had accused her.

That was what made the statement strange.

The officer asked, “Do you know who prepared this document?”

“No.”

“Do you know how it was submitted?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Mom, tell them.”

I shook my head.

“I can't tell them something I don't know.”

“You know I would never do this.”

I remembered the papers she had brought to my kitchen.

She had called them insurance forms.

She had placed them in front of me.

“Just sign here.”

I had almost signed.

Then I noticed the language near the bottom.

Transfer of ownership.

I had refused.

Three days later, I met Sarah.

She told me not to confront Ellen.

Instead, she told me to keep copies of everything.

I did.

I had spent years running a bakery.

One thing I learned from selling pies was that the top could look perfect while something underneath had already burned.

Ellen sat down.

Her eyes were wet.

“Mom, please.”

I looked at her.

“You don't get to use that word only when you need something.”

She lowered her head.

For a moment, I remembered the child she had been.

Then Sarah closed the folder.

“There is another issue.”

Ellen looked up.

“What?”

“The bank account.”

Silence.

Sarah turned toward me.

“Your mother instructed the bank to add additional authorization requirements several weeks ago.”

Ellen stared.

“The transfer attempt was blocked.”

She looked at her phone.

“But I used her fingerprint.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn't it work?”

“Because your mother's fingerprint alone is no longer sufficient.”

Ellen looked at me.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I paused.

“I prepared.”

She stared at me.

“What is the difference?”

“The difference is that I didn't believe my daughter would betray me.”

I swallowed.

“I simply refused to leave myself defenseless if she did.”

The officer stepped forward.

“Ms. Miller, I need you to come with me so we can discuss the attempted transfer.”

Her eyes widened.

“Are you arresting me?”

“We need to ask questions.”

She turned toward me.

“Mom.”

I remained silent.

“Please don't let them take me.”

I looked at her.

“I've spent thirty-five years protecting you.”

She began to cry.

“Then help me now.”

“I already did.”

She stared.

“You helped me through college.”

“Yes.”

“You bought my first car.”

“Yes.”

“You paid for my wedding.”

“Yes.”

“You helped us buy our house.”

“Yes.”

“You watched my children.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“Then why are you doing this?”

I looked at my daughter.

“Because loving you never meant I had to surrender everything I own.”

The room fell silent.

Ellen wiped her cheeks.

For one brief moment, I thought she might finally understand.

Instead, she whispered something that made me look toward the door.

“You don't know everything.”

“What don't I know?”

She glanced toward the hallway.

Then back at me.

“Robert.”

Her husband's name hung between us.

I remembered all the questions he had asked over the years.

Was the house paid off?

How much had I saved?

Did my husband leave anything behind?

What would happen to my property?

He always asked casually.

Almost too casually.

Sarah watched me carefully.

Then she opened another folder.

“I think you should see these.”

She placed a photograph on my blanket.

Robert standing outside a bank.

Another showed him meeting a man I did not recognize.

A third showed him entering a law office.

Then Sarah placed down a medical document.

I looked at the name.

My name.

Constance Miller.

But I had never been to that clinic.

I stared at the signature.

“That isn't mine.”

“No.”

Sarah's voice was low.

“We believe someone has been building a medical record suggesting that you are incapable of managing your own finances.”

My hands became cold.

I looked at Ellen.

She was no longer crying.

She was staring at the document.

And there was something in her eyes I had never seen before.

Recognition.

“Ellen.”

She said nothing.

“Did you know about this?”

Her shoulders began to shake.

“I didn't know it would go this far.”

The officer looked at Sarah.

Sarah closed the folder slowly.

“What exactly did you know?”

Ellen covered her face.

“I only wanted the money.”

I felt something inside me give way.

Not because I was surprised.

Because hearing her say it aloud made the betrayal real.

I whispered the only question that mattered.

“Who helped you?”

Ellen lowered her hands.

Her eyes met mine.

“Robert.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Attorney
