the clinic?”

Robert didn't answer.

Sarah said, “Apparently someone else.”

The nurse entered fully.

“Mrs. Miller needs rest.”

I corner.

She had become strangely quiet.

The woman who had spent the morning demanding answers now seemed unable to look at me.

I understood why.

The truth had finally become larger than the money.

It had become about what she had allowed her husband to do.

Sarah gathered the documents.

“I want you to know something.”

“What?”

“You were right to distrust the paperwork.”

I looked at her.

“What made you suspect them?”

She smiled faintly.

“The signature.”

“My signature?”

“Yes.”

“What was wrong with it?”

“You always write the first at the document.

Such a tiny detail.

A person could copy the shape.

They could copy the letters.

They could imitate the pressure.

But they didn't know the habit.

That was the clue.

Sarah had noticed it before I did.

“That's how you knew?”

“It was one of several things.”

“What were the others?”

“The medical statement.”

She explained that the doctor's report used terminology inconsistent with the clinic's standard forms.

The date also fell on a day when the clinic had no appointment under my name.

Then there was the bank authorization.

The account number was correct, but the form used an outdated address.

Someone had gathered accurate information from old records but had not noticed that I had moved several years earlier.

The mistakes were small.

Individually, they meant little.

Together, they formed a pattern.

Someone had been assembling my identity from documents.

They knew enough to imitate me.

But they did not know me.

Ellen looked up.

“Who gave them the old address?”

Robert said nothing.

Sarah turned toward him.

“Mr. Miller?”

He rubbed his face.

“I don't know.”

The officer asked, “Did you have access to your mother-in-law's records?”

“Yes.”

“Through your what?”

“To solve a problem.”

“What problem?”

Robert looked at me.

“Your mother wasn't going to leave us anything.”

I felt no anger this time.

Only exhaustion.

“You could have asked.”

“You would have said no.”

“Yes.”

He gave a bitter smile.

“Exactly.”

I looked at him.

“So you decided no didn't matter.”

He said nothing.

That was the answer.

The officer received another call.

He stepped into the hallway.

Sarah leaned toward me.

“There's something you should know.”

“What?”

“The eight hundred thousand dollar account isn't just money.”

I waited.

“It has a beneficiary.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“Not Ellen.”

Ellen heard.

“What?”

Sarah looked at me.

“Your mother changed the beneficiary three years ago.”

I frowned.

“I did?”

“You did.”

“Who did I name?”

Sarah handed me the document.

I read the name.

My hand began to tremble.

It was a charity.

A small organization that had helped my husband during his final illness.

I had forgotten.

Ellen stared at the page.

“So none of it comes to me?”

I looked at her.

“It wasn't about you.”

“But you told me the house would be mine.”

“I said I hoped to leave you something.”

“You changed everything.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After your father's death.”

Ellen lowered her head.

She understood now.

If I died, the money she had been counting on would not automatically come to her.

The house might have remained in the family.

But the larger account had already been directed elsewhere.

That explained the urgency.

Robert knew.

I didn't know how he had learned.

But he knew.

And he had convinced Ellen that waiting was pointless.

Robert suddenly spoke.

“She was going to change it again.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

He didn't answer.

Sarah did.

“Because we found a draft.”

She opened another file.

It was dated four days earlier.

The draft changed the beneficiary again.

This time, the money would go into a trust.

For Ellen's children.

I stared at the page.

I had prepared it with Sarah.

I had intended to sign it after my hospital discharge.

Ellen looked at me.

“You were going to leave it to my children?”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

Robert looked furious.

“You weren't supposed to know about that.”

I looked at him.

“So that's why.”

He shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“You were going to give the money away.”

“I was going to protect it.”

“For strangers.”

“For your children.”

He said nothing.

Ellen stared at her husband.

“You knew about the trust?”

“Yes.”

“And you tried to take the money before Mom could sign it.”

Robert looked away.

That was the first moment Ellen truly understood what he had done.

Not just to me.

To her children.

A nurse returned with medication.

I watched the syringe.

My stomach tightened.

For one terrifying second, Robert's earlier words echoed in my mind.

Sedated.

I looked at the nurse's badge.

Then at the medication label.

Everything was normal.

Still, I couldn't relax.

Sarah noticed.

“It's okay.”

I nodded.

But something had changed.

Trust had become a dangerous thing.

The officer returned.

“We have a problem.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

“The clinic doctor whose name appears on the report has disappeared.”

Sarah frowned.

“Disappeared?”

“His office is closed.”

“When?”

“Today.”

Robert's face went pale.

The officer continued.

“And someone removed the clinic's patient records before we arrived.”

Ellen looked at Robert.

He shook his head.

“I didn't do that.”

The officer stared at him.

“Then someone is covering your tracks.”

Robert looked toward the door.

His breathing became faster.

“It's him.”

“Who?”

“The man who called.”

“What man?”

Robert swallowed.

“I don't know his name.”

Sarah stood.

“You met him.”

“No.”

“You're lying.”

Robert looked at her.

“I met him once.”

“Where?”

“At the clinic.”

The room fell silent.

“Why?”

Robert stared at the floor.

“He offered to arrange the medical statement.”

Ellen whispered, “For money?”

Robert nodded.

“How much?”

“Twenty thousand.”

I closed my eyes.

Twenty thousand dollars.

That was what my life had been worth to them.

The officer asked, “Who paid him?”

Robert did not answer.

Sarah stepped closer.

“Who paid him?”

Robert looked at Ellen.

Ellen's face went white.

“Don't look at me.”

“I didn't pay him.”

“Then who did?”

Robert whispered:

“Your mother.”

Everyone stared at him.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“Not really.”

“Explain.”

Robert swallowed.

“The money came from an account in her name.”

My heart stopped.

“What
