nodded.

“You can come.”

Robert's head lifted.

“What about me?”

“You stay here.”

“I know where the unit know.”

“Then how did you get inside three days ago?”

“Victor opened it.”

“With his key?”

“Yes.”

The officer asked, “Did he enter?”

Robert nodded.

“What did he take?”

“I don't know.”

“Did he remove anything?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Robert looked at me.

“A box.”

“What kind?”

“Small metal box.”

My heart stopped.

“Like the one David left?”

“Yes.”

Sarah looked at the estate archive.

“The metal box we opened.”

I stared.

“That box came from the estate archive.”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“The box you opened wasn't the original.”

Everyone went silent.

Sarah looked at him.

“What are you saying?”

“Victor replaced it.”

I felt dizzy.

“The letter.”

Robert nodded.

“Copied.”

Sarah's face hardened.

“That handwriting was real.”

“Of course.”

“How?”

“Victor had David's old letters.”

My heart sank.

The warning we had just read might not have been David's final letter.

It might have been a reproduction.

A carefully constructed message designed to lead us exactly where someone wanted us to go.

I looked at Sarah.

“Then where is the real letter?”

Robert answered.

“In storage unit 314.”

The officer immediately stood.

“We're going.”

Before anyone could move, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time there was no warning.

Only an address.

The address of the storage facility.

Then another message appeared.

“Come alone.”

I looked at Sarah.

She shook her head.

“No.”

I already knew.

Someone wanted me there.

But they didn't know something.

I had stopped playing by their rules.

The officer took the phone.

“We're not going there without a controlled operation.”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something else.

The sender had used a phrase.

A phrase only one person had ever used with me.

My husband.

“Come alone.”

David had said those words whenever he wanted to show me something private.

The message might have been copied.

But whoever wrote it knew our history.

That meant the sender had access to things far more personal than financial records.

I looked at Ellen.

“Did you tell Robert about that phrase?”

“No.”

“Did Margaret?”

“I don't know.”

Robert suddenly spoke.

“Victor knew it.”

I turned.

“How?”

“David told him.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

The officer looked at Robert.

“What else did David tell Victor?”

Robert closed his eyes.

“He told him where the original policy was.”

“Where?”

Robert opened his eyes.

“At the bakery.”

My heart stopped.

“The old bakery?”

“Yes.”

I remembered the building.

The basement.

The loose brick.

The place where David had once hidden spare keys.

The place where I had spent most of my life.

The place I had believed was simply part of my past.

Now it might contain the evidence that explained my husband's death.

Sarah stood.

“We need to go.”

The officer nodded.

Ellen stepped closer to me.

“Mom.”

I looked at her.

“I know I don't deserve your trust.”

She swallowed.

“But I want to earn it.”

I said nothing.

Because trust could not be demanded.

It had to survive examination.

And we had not finished examining the truth.

The officer opened the door.

Two security officers waited outside.

Sarah gathered the documents.

I looked once more at the phone.

The unknown sender had sent one final message.

“You have one chance to find what David hid before Margaret does.”

I looked at Ellen.

Then at Robert.

Then at Sarah.

The next place we were going was the bakery where my life had begun.

And somewhere beneath that building was the answer to a question I had carried for twenty years without knowing it was a question at
