Water clung to the dark shoulders of the gravestones, and the grass gave under our shoes as people gathered beneath the gray sky. A few funeral umbrellas remained open even though the rain had stopped. Nobody seemed ready to leave.

Marcus stood beside the family car, his black suit jacket hanging open and his tie loosened at the throat. His face was flushed, not with grief alone.

“She’s taking everything,” he said.

I thought he was speaking to someone else.

Then he pointed directly at me.

“Elena is stealing Dad’s inheritance.”

The words seemed to travel farther than they should have.

Our aunt stopped halfway toward her car. Somewhere near the chapel, someone was carrying empty flower stands inside.

My father was gone.

And my brother had chosen that moment to turn his death into a courtroom.

I had spent the previous eleven months watching Dad become weaker. I had learned which medication made him sleepy, which chair supported his back, and how long he could talk before needing to close his eyes. Marcus had visited, sometimes, but always seemed to have somewhere else to be.

Now he stood there claiming I had planned to take our father’s money before the grave had even been covered.

“I haven’t taken anything,” I said.

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course you haven’t.”

Vanessa touched his arm.

“Marcus, maybe we should go.”

He pulled away from her.

“No. I want everyone to hear this.”

I looked around at the people who had come to bury my father.

Some lowered their eyes.

Some watched Marcus.

No one spoke.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Dad told me what he was leaving me.”

“He told you a lot of things,” I answered.

“And you think that gives you the right to change everything?”

“I haven’t changed anything.”

“Then why did Samuel call me this morning and tell me we were going to open the safe after the service?”

That made me pause.

Samuel Price was my father’s attorney. He had handled Dad’s business affairs for more than twenty years. He had also been the person Dad asked me to trust during the last weeks of his illness.

I hadn’t known Samuel would speak to Marcus about the safe.

“What safe?” Aunt Margaret asked.

Marcus turned toward her.

“The one Dad kept in his study.”

The family went quiet again.

Dad had never liked talking about the safe.

I knew it existed. I had seen it behind the framed landscape painting in his office when I was a child. He used to tell us it contained documents that were nobody else’s business.

When Marcus and I were teenagers, we had once tried to open it.

Dad caught us.

He didn’t yell.

He simply looked at the bent paper clip in Marcus’s hand and said, “If you ever need something from that box, ask me.”

Marcus had laughed.

I remembered that now.

He hadn’t asked Dad then.

He had never been good at asking.

Samuel approached us from the chapel.

He was carrying a brown leather folder beneath one arm.

His expression was serious.

“Everyone should return to the house,” he said.

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Why?”

“Because your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

Samuel looked at me first.

Then at Marcus.

“Both of you are to be present.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t need another lecture about family.”

“This isn’t a lecture.”

“What is it?”

Samuel glanced at the folder.

“A reading of certain documents and the opening of the safe.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Today?”

“Today.”

“Why?”

“Because your father specifically requested that it happen before the estate is distributed.”

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

Until then, Marcus had been angry.

Now he looked uneasy.

I noticed.

So did Samuel.

I had seen that same expression once before.

It was the afternoon Dad asked me to sit beside his hospital bed and close the door.

His voice had been weak.

“Elena, when I’m gone, Marcus may believe you’re taking something from him.”

I had smiled sadly.

“He already thinks that sometimes.”

Dad didn’t smile.

“He may become convinced.”

“Why?”

He looked toward the window.

“Because he knows there are things he doesn’t understand.”

I waited.

“What things?”

Dad shook his head.

“Not yet.”

He had always been stubborn about timing.

Even when he was sick, he preferred silence to an answer he wasn’t ready to give.

At the funeral reception, Marcus sat at the far end of the dining room while relatives moved quietly around him. Nobody had much appetite.

The house smelled of coffee, flowers, and the faint cedar scent that always reminded me of Dad.

His study remained closed.

Samuel stood near the fireplace speaking with two men I didn’t recognize.

They were dressed plainly.

No uniforms.

No obvious badges.

When one of them looked toward Marcus, Marcus immediately noticed.

“Who are they?” he asked.

Samuel answered without lowering his voice.

“Investigators.”

Marcus stood.

“For what?”

“We’ll discuss that in the study.”

Marcus looked at me.

“You knew about this.”

It wasn’t a question.

I shook my said, “You’re lying.”

I didn’t answer.

Because something had begun bothering me.

Three weeks before Dad died, he had asked me to collect his bank it?”

“Evidence.”

I had asked what kind.

He had closed the drawer.

“Something I hope I never need.”

I hadn’t understood then.

I understood less now.

At four o’clock, Samuel finally opened the study door.

“Everyone inside.”

We entered slowly.

Dad’s study looked exactly as it had the day before his funeral.

His leather chair sat behind the desk.

His reading glasses were beside an unfinished book.

A small brass clock ticked on the mantel.

And behind the large landscape painting stood the safe.

Marcus stared at it.

I watched his hands.

He was rubbing his thumb against the side of his index finger.

He used to do that as a child whenever he was nervous.

Samuel noticed too.

He walked to the painting.

“Your father gave me instructions about this.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“What instructions?”

Samuel removed the painting from its hook.

The safe appeared behind it.

Marcus exhaled.

Aunt Margaret whispered, “I’ve never seen that before.”

Dad’s safe was old, heavy, and dark green.

Samuel entered a combination.

The first number.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The lock clicked.

Marcus moved closer.

Samuel opened the door.

Inside were several folders, a black flash drive, two envelopes, and a small metal box.

Marcus immediately pointed.

“That’s what I’m talking about.”

Samuel in here concerns inheritance.”

Marcus laughed.

“Of course it doesn’t.”

He looked at me.

“Elena always gets the things that don’t concern inheritance.”

I ignored him.

Samuel removed the first folder.

He placed it on the desk.

Then another.

Then another.

The investigators moved closer.

Daniel Brooks, the taller of the two, introduced himself.

“We’re here because your father requested a financial review before his death.”

Marcus’s face changed.

“A financial review?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father believed some of his accounts had been accessed without his authorization.”

Marcus looked directly at me.

“There.”

He slapped the desk.

“There it is.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“You’ve been waiting for this.”

“For what?”

“For Dad to make you executor.”

Samuel interrupted.

“Marcus, nobody has said Elena is executor.”

Marcus turned.

“Then why is she standing there?”

“Because she is your father’s daughter.”

The room went silent.

Samuel opened the first folder.

Inside were bank statements.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What are those?”

Samuel didn’t answer immediately.

He turned one page.

Then another.

Then another.

His face remained unreadable.

I noticed the dates.

The amounts were large.

Much larger than I expected.

Marcus leaned over the desk.

“What’s missing?”

Samuel looked at him.

“That’s what we’re here to determine.”

Marcus glanced at me.

I felt the old accusation returning.

He believed every document was somehow evidence against him or proof that I had betrayed him.

But Dad had warned me about this.

He had known Marcus would react badly.

He had also known something else.

That there would come a moment when neither of us could hide behind family loyalty anymore.

Samuel closed the folder.

“We’re going to begin with the account activity.”

Marcus folded his arms.

“And then?”

“Then we’ll open the remaining compartments.”

I looked toward the safe.

There was one small envelope at the very back.

My name wasn’t visible.

Neither was Marcus’s.

Only Dad’s handwriting.

A single word.

“Children.”

My throat tightened.

Dad had never called us that in writing.

He always used our names.

I reached toward it.

Samuel stopped me.

“Not yet.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because your father left a sequence.”

Marcus laughed under his breath.

“A sequence?”

Samuel nodded.

“He wanted the evidence reviewed before certain letters were opened.”

“What evidence?”

Samuel looked at the bank statements.

“This.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

I realized then that the safe wasn’t holding an inheritance.

It was holding an explanation.

And whatever Dad had spent the last year preparing to reveal had been important enough that he wanted all of us in the room when it happened.

The study door closed behind us.

Nobody spoke.

Then Samuel opened the first financial statement.

The number at the top made Marcus stop breathing for a moment.

And I realized the funeral had not been the beginning of our family’s crisis.

It had only been the moment when Dad’s hidden truth finally became impossible to bury.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Safe Held Records My Brother Never Expected to See, and Dad Had Ordered
