on the desk was not a will.

It was a bank statement.

Marcus stared at it for several seconds before taking it from Samuel.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then back to the top.

“What am I looking at?”

Samuel pointed to a highlighted transaction.

“A withdrawal.”

Marcus frowned.

“That's not unusual.”

“No,” Samuel said. “One withdrawal isn't.”

He placed another statement beside it.

“And neither is this one.”

Then another.

Marcus's expression changed.

I stepped closer.

The amounts were significant.

Thousands.

Then tens of thousands.

Transfers from accounts Dad had rarely discussed with us.

I felt a pressure behind my ribs.

“Who authorized them?” I asked.

Samuel looked at me.

“That is the question.”

Marcus dropped the papers onto the desk.

“You're making this sound like someone robbed him.”

Daniel Brooks answered from near the window.

“Someone may have.”

Marcus turned toward him.

“May have?”

Daniel remained calm.

“We're still reviewing the records.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because your father asked the bank to investigate.”

Marcus looked at me again.

“And when did he do that?”

Samuel answered.

“Several weeks before his death.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He looked around the room.

“This is ridiculous.”

Nobody challenged him.

Samuel opened another folder.

“This contains correspondence between your father and the bank.”

Marcus reached for it.

Samuel pulled it back.

“Not yet.”

“Why not?”

“Because I want everyone to understand the sequence.”

Marcus laughed.

“You keep saying sequence.”

“Because your father was very deliberate.”

That silenced him.

Dad had been deliberate about almost everything.

He wrote lists.

He labeled boxes.

He kept receipts from twenty years earlier.

When Mom died, he spent three months organizing her photographs before allowing anyone to move them.

His mind worked in layers.

If he had suspected someone was taking money, he wouldn't have confronted them immediately.

He would have watched.

Collected.

Waited.

And built a record.

I remembered the last time I had seen him hold a bank statement.

He had been sitting in his bedroom with a blanket across his legs.

His hands trembled slightly.

“Dad,” I had said, “you need to rest.”

He had folded the paper.

“I am resting.”

“You're working.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I'm finishing something.”

“What?”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“The truth.”

I hadn't known what he meant.

Now I did.

Marcus paced behind the desk.

“You're all acting like I did something.”

Nobody answered.

He stopped.

“Did Dad accuse me?”

Samuel looked down at the papers.

“Not directly.”

“Then why are you looking at me?”

“I haven't looked at you.”

“You don't have to.”

Marcus's voice had become sharper.

“I know how this works.”

Vanessa stepped beside him.

“Marcus, calm down.”

He looked at her.

“Don't tell me to calm down.”

She immediately withdrew her hand.

That small movement told me something.

Vanessa was afraid of where this was going.

Not frightened of him physically.

Frightened of what might be revealed.

I noticed her glance toward the safe.

Then toward Marcus.

Then away.

Samuel removed a second envelope.

“This is from your father.”

Marcus crossed his arms.

“To whom?”

“Both of you.”

Samuel opened it.

Inside was a single typed page.

He read silently first.

Then he looked up.

“Your father wrote that he expects accusations to be made against Elena.”

Marcus scoffed.

“Convenient.”

Samuel continued.

“He also wrote that Marcus may believe certain assets belong to him.”

Marcus said nothing.

Samuel folded the page.

“He specifically instructed me not to make any distribution until the financial records were examined.”

Marcus's face darkened.

“So you're freezing my inheritance.”

“No.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Protecting the estate.”

“From me?”

Samuel did not answer.

Marcus looked at me.

“You see what he's doing?”

I said nothing.

“You're enjoying this.”

That hurt.

Not because I believed him.

Because I knew where it came from.

Marcus had always believed Dad and I understood each other in ways he didn't.

When we were children, Dad taught me to balance the household checkbook.

He taught Marcus how to repair the old tractor.

When I went to college, Dad helped with tuition.

When Marcus started his first company, Dad invested money.

Different kinds of trust.

Different kinds of attention.

Marcus had turned those differences into a competition.

He never said it directly.

But it was always there.

At birthdays.

At family dinners.

Even in hospital rooms.

Samuel opened the next folder.

“Let's talk about the transfers.”

Marcus stiffened.

“What transfers?”

“These.”

Samuel spread several statements across the desk.

There were twelve large withdrawals from Dad's primary investment account over an eight-month period.

The room became very still.

I counted them.

Twelve.

Some were made only weeks apart.

Others came within days of each other.

The total was enormous.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Who received them?”

Samuel pointed to the first.

“A company called Rowe Strategic Holdings.”

Marcus said nothing.

I looked at him.

“That's your company.”

He shrugged.

“It was one of my companies.”

“Was?”

“I closed it.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

Samuel placed another statement beside the first.

“This transfer occurred after you supposedly closed it.”

Marcus stared at the page.

“Dad invested in the company.”

Samuel nodded.

“Possibly.”

“What do you mean possibly?”

“The transaction description does not identify it as an investment.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“He gave me money.”

I spoke quietly.

“For what?”

Marcus looked at me.

“For business.”

“Did he tell you that?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“A long time ago.”

Samuel asked, “Did he give you permission to move money from his investment account?”

Marcus hesitated.

“He told me I could use it.”

“How much?”

Marcus didn't answer.

Samuel turned another page.

“Was it forty-two thousand?”

Marcus looked at him.

“Maybe.”

“Thirty-seven thousand five hundred?”

Silence.

“Twenty-nine thousand?”

Marcus looked away.

Vanessa stared at him.

I could see questions forming on her face.

“Marcus,” she said, “what is he talking about?”

Marcus didn't respond.

She stepped closer.

“Did your father give you that money?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I was going to pay it back.”

Vanessa froze.

I looked at Samuel.

He didn't react.

He simply opened another folder.

“This is why your father kept records.”

Marcus's voice rose.

“He knew about my company.”

“Yes.”

“He knew I was struggling.”

“Yes.”

“He helped me.”

Samuel nodded.

“Some of the transfers may have been legitimate assistance.”

Marcus seized on that.

“Exactly.”

“But not all of them.”

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel placed a transaction authorization on the desk.

Marcus's name was written at the bottom.

His face changed.

“That isn't my signature.”

I leaned closer.

The signature looked convincing.

Samuel placed another beside it.

Then another.

Four documents.

Four signatures.

Marcus stared.

“I didn't sign those.”

Samuel asked, “Are you saying someone forged your signature?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked around.

Then his eyes settled on me.

“Elena.”

I almost laughed from disbelief.

“You think I forged your signature?”

“You had access.”

“To what?”

“Dad's office.”

“So did you.”

Marcus's voice became louder.

“You were always there.”

I stepped back.

“You're accusing me because you can't explain the papers.”

Vanessa moved toward him.

“Marcus, stop.”

He turned on her.

“You believe her?”

“I believe we don't know enough yet.”

That seemed to anger him more than anything.

“You're taking her side.”

“No.”

“You are.”

“No, I'm asking you to stop accusing people without evidence.”

Samuel's voice cut through the room.

“Enough.”

Everyone went quiet.

He gathered the documents.

“The dates matter.”

He laid them in order.

“The first questionable transaction occurred nine months before your father's hospitalization.”

Marcus looked down.

“The second was seven months before his diagnosis.”

Another page.

“The third happened five months before anyone outside the immediate family knew he was seriously ill.”

Marcus's face became pale.

I watched him.

His breathing had changed.

“Dad wasn't sick yet,” he said.

“No,” Samuel answered.

Marcus looked at me.

“Then why would I steal from him?”

I didn't answer.

Because the question wasn't mine to answer.

Daniel moved away from the window.

“Your father didn't believe the money was disappearing because of his illness.”

Marcus stared at him.

“Then why?”

Daniel said, “That's what the investigation was intended to establish.”

Marcus sat down.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said quietly, “How much?”

Samuel looked at her.

“How much what?”

“How much money?”

Samuel turned a page.

“Nearly half a million dollars.”

Vanessa's hand went to her mouth.

Marcus closed his eyes.

I felt something inside me sink.

Dad had never told me the full amount.

He had shown me statements.

He had shown me dates.

But he had never said the total.

Perhaps he had known I would ask too many questions.

Or perhaps he had wanted me to understand the pattern before the number.

Samuel opened another folder.

“This one concerns purchases made against your father's credit accounts.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because several charges were disputed.”

He placed the first receipt on the desk.

A luxury jewelry store.

Then a resort.

Then a designer boutique.

Vanessa stared at them.

“I've never seen those.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Vanessa—”

She turned.

“What?”

He didn't answer.

Samuel pointed to the dates.

“Your father's card was used physically at each location.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't have his card.”

Samuel looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked away.

I felt the room tighten.

Vanessa's voice became smaller.

“Marcus?”

He remained silent.

“Did you use his card?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

He didn't answer.

She looked at Samuel.

“Why is my name on these documents?”

Samuel explained carefully.

“Because the bank's records show the card was used by you.”

Vanessa's face reddened.

“That doesn't mean I stole anything.”

“No,” Samuel said. “It doesn't.”

She turned toward Marcus.

“Tell them.”

Marcus stared at the floor.

“Marcus.”

Still nothing.

She stepped back.

“Why did you report Dad's card missing?”

He finally looked up.

“What?”

“You reported it missing.”

Samuel nodded.

“Two days after those purchases.”

Vanessa looked at her husband.

“You told me Dad canceled the card.”

Marcus said nothing.

“You told me it had been lost.”

Still nothing.

She whispered, “You lied.”

Marcus stood.

“Not here.”

“Where, then?”

He looked toward the relatives gathered near the door.

“Not in front of everyone.”

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

“You brought me into this room.”

“I didn't.”

“You knew these records existed.”

“I didn't know what they had.”

Samuel reached for the flash drive.

Marcus noticed.

“What is that?”

“Something your father left.”

“What?”

“Security footage.”

Marcus went completely still.

Samuel connected the drive to Dad's computer.

A folder appeared.

There were dozens of files.

Dates.

Times.

Locations.

Marcus took one step forward.

Samuel raised a hand.

“Stay there.”

The first file loaded.

The screen showed Dad's office.

Marcus was standing beside the safe.

He looked toward the door.

Then toward the camera.

His hand went into his pocket.

He removed a key.

I heard someone behind me whisper.

“Oh my God.”

Marcus stared at the screen.

The video continued.

He opened the safe.

He removed an envelope.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

Marcus whispered, “That's not what it looks like.”

I looked at him.

“Then tell us what it is.”

He couldn't.

Samuel stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at me.

“You knew about the cameras.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Dad asked me not to.”

His face twisted.

“You always knew.”

“No.”

“You always knew everything.”

I looked at the safe.

“No, Marcus.”

I looked back at him.

“Dad knew.”

Samuel opened another video.

This one showed Marcus meeting a man outside a restaurant.

Something passed between them.

Money.

Then another file.

Another meeting.

Another exchange.

The evidence accumulated without anyone saying a word.

Marcus sat down slowly.

Then he whispered the sentence that changed the way everyone looked at him.

“Dad set me up.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

“He did.”

“No. Your father recorded what he saw.”

Marcus looked toward me.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you let this happen.”

I swallowed.

“Dad wanted you to stop before it came to this.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You think you're better than me.”

“No.”

“You always have.”

“No.”

“Then why did he trust you?”

I looked at my father's empty chair.

“Because he knew I wouldn't fight you for money.”

Marcus stared at me.

Samuel closed the folder.

Then he reached into the safe.

“There is one final document before we move to the next stage.”

He removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Underneath, in Dad's handwriting, were seven words.

OPEN ONLY AFTER THE FAMILY HAS SEEN THE EVIDENCE.

My hands began to tremble.

Samuel placed it in front of me.

And suddenly I understood why Dad had insisted that we all be present.

Whatever was inside wasn't simply about money.

It was about what he believed would happen after his death.

And judging by Marcus's face, he already suspected that my father's final letter might know more about him than he wanted anyone else to learn.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Dad Had Been Tracking the Missing Money Long Before His Illness, and the Documents
