missing.

He had known for almost a year.

He had deliberately delayed confronting the person responsible because he wanted proof.

He had also written something another document.

“This transaction was for forty-two thousand dollars.”

He turned it toward Marcus.

“It went to Rowe Strategic April second, thirty-seven thousand five hundred dollars went to the same company.”

Marcus looked at the paper.

Then another.

“Another it.”

“No.”

His hand struck the desk.

“You weren't there!”

“I was.”

His anger faltered.

I took a breath.

“Every time Dad asked me to stay after you left.”

Marcus stared.

I continued.

“He told me about the missing money one piece at a time.”

His voice became quieter.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“You knew.”

“I didn't.”

“You knew enough to keep taking it.”

Vanessa stepped between us.

“This is insane.”

Samuel looked at her.

“No one is asking you to defend anyone.”

She crossed her arms.

“Marcus would never steal from his father.”

Samuel answered calmly.

“No one said the word theft.”

Vanessa relaxed slightly.

Then Samuel added:

“The bank has.”

Her face lost its color.

Daniel stepped forward.

“My name is Daniel Brooks. didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Samuel.

Samuel nodded.

“Because your father suspected unauthorized transfers.”

Marcus's voice became strained.

“Against whom?”

Daniel answered.

“We're still establishing responsibility.”

“But you suspect me.”

“We are following evidence.”

Marcus looked toward the computer.

“You've been watching me.”

“We've been reviewing records.”

“That's the same thing.”

“No,” Daniel said. “It isn't.”

Samuel opened the folder containing the credit card records.

“There's another issue.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What?”

Samuel placed a receipt on the desk.

A jewelry purchase.

Eighteen thousand nine hundred dollars.

Vanessa stared.

“I didn't buy that.”

Another receipt.

A resort.

Eleven thousand four hundred.

Another.

A designer boutique.

Seven thousand eight hundred.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Tell them.”

He said nothing.

“Marcus.”

Silence.

“Did you give me Dad's card?”

“No.”

“Did you know these purchases were made?”

He looked away.

Her voice became quiet.

“You did.”

Marcus finally spoke.

“I was going to replace the money.”

“What money?”

He didn't answer.

Vanessa looked at Samuel.

“Who used the card?”

Samuel said, “The bank's records show it was physically used by Vanessa.”

She stared at him.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It may not,” Samuel replied. “But the records are clear.”

Vanessa looked at Marcus again.

“You reported that card missing.”

He said nothing.

“Two days after those purchases.”

Marcus's shoulders stiffened.

“Vanessa—”

“You lied to me.”

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

He had no answer.

For the first time since I had known them as a couple, I saw a visible distance between them.

It wasn't anger.

It was uncertainty.

Vanessa no longer knew which parts of her marriage were real.

Samuel picked up the flash drive.

“This is why your father insisted the safe be opened with the family present.”

Marcus looked at it.

“What else is on there?”

“Security footage.”

His expression changed.

Samuel connected the drive.

The screen filled with a dated recording.

Dad's office.

Marcus entered.

He looked around.

Then reached into his pocket.

A key appeared in his hand.

I recognized it immediately.

Dad had told me he lost that key months earlier.

Marcus walked to the safe.

He opened it.

He removed an envelope.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

Marcus whispered, “That's not what it looks like.”

I looked at him.

“Then what does it look like?”

He had no answer.

The video ended.

Samuel opened another file.

Marcus was outside a restaurant.

A man approached him.

They spoke.

Money changed hands.

The recording stopped.

Another file.

Another meeting.

Another exchange.

No one in the room spoke.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Finally he whispered, “Dad set me up.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

“He did.”

“No.”

“You don't know what happened.”

Samuel looked directly at him.

“Your father installed cameras because he was afraid of what you were doing.”

Marcus turned toward me.

“You knew about them.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you stop me?”

I swallowed.

“Because Dad wanted you to stop yourself.”

His face tightened.

“You think you're better than me.”

“No.”

“You've always thought that.”

“No.”

“Then why did Dad leave you in charge?”

I looked at the photograph of Dad on the bookshelf.

“Because he knew I wouldn't fight you for money.”

Marcus stopped.

The words seemed to land somewhere deeper than the accusations had.

Samuel closed the folder.

“There is another document.”

He reached into the safe.

The final envelope was still there.

The one with my name.

He placed it on the desk.

I opened it fully this time.

The letter wasn't about dividing the estate.

It wasn't about the house.

It wasn't even mainly about Marcus.

Dad wrote that money had become a weapon inside our family long before anyone admitted it.

He wrote that Marcus believed inheritance was proof of love.

He wrote that I might be tempted to give Marcus what he demanded simply to keep peace.

Then came the line that made me stop.

He wrote that peace without truth was only another form of dishonesty.

I looked up.

Marcus was watching me.

“What?”

I couldn't answer.

Samuel said softly, “Read the last paragraph.”

I did.

Dad had written that if Marcus continued to deny the missing money, I should give him a choice.

He could walk away from the estate dispute and face the consequences honestly.

Or he could explain where the remaining two hundred fourteen thousand dollars had gone.

My hands went cold.

I looked at Marcus.

“Dad knew.”

Marcus frowned.

“Knew what?”

“About another amount.”

“What amount?”

“The remaining two hundred fourteen thousand.”

His face drained of color.

Nobody moved.

I looked around the room.

Everyone had heard the number.

But only one person reacted as though it were a secret.

Marcus.

He stared at me.

I watched the blood leave his face.

“You can walk away from everything today,” I said quietly.

He said nothing.

“Or you can tell the truth about where the remaining money went.”

Marcus's lips parted.

No sound came out.

The room remained silent.

Because the investigators had already traced nearly half a million dollars.

But there was still another $214,000.

And the look in Marcus's eyes told me that money hadn't disappeared.

It had gone somewhere.

Somewhere he believed nobody would ever find.
