The soil was still dark and damp in the grooves.

“It came in from outside,” he said.

I looked toward the kitchen.

The back door was closed.

Not locked.

My stomach tightened.

“I locked that door before we left for the cemetery.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

I remembered doing it. I had stood there with my coat already on, checked the deadbolt, and pulled the handle twice because Dad had always been obsessive about locks.

Samuel moved closer.

“Could someone have had a key?”

“Not one I knew about,” I said.

Marcus was staring at the footprint.

“I didn't do this.”

Nobody had accused him.

Still, he sounded as though he needed everyone to believe him.

Daniel stood.

“Let's keep everyone out of this hallway until we've checked it.”

He motioned toward his colleague.

The other investigator remained near the study while Daniel followed the trail toward Dad's bedroom.

I stayed behind him.

Marcus started to follow.

I held up my hand.

“Wait.”

He looked irritated.

“Why?”

“Because we don't know who was here.”

“I can protect you.”

“I don't need you to.”

He looked at me for a moment, then stepped back.

It was strange.

A few hours earlier, I had believed Marcus was the greatest threat inside the house.

Now I wasn't sure he was even the reason someone had broken in.

Daniel stopped outside Dad's bedroom.

The door stood open by several inches.

I felt a chill travel down my back.

“I closed that,” I whispered.

Samuel looked at me.

“You're certain?”

“Yes.”

He didn't challenge me.

He simply nodded.

Daniel pushed the door wider with a gloved hand.

Nothing appeared disturbed at first.

The bed was still made.

Dad's reading glasses rested beside the lamp.

His old slippers sat beneath the chair.

The framed photograph of our family remained on the nightstand.

Everything looked exactly as it had that morning.

That made the intrusion more unsettling.

Someone had entered carefully.

Someone had known what they wanted.

They hadn't overturned drawers or thrown clothes across the floor.

Daniel scanned the room.

“Don't touch anything.”

I stood near the doorway and looked around.

Dad's bedroom had always been quiet.

He kept the curtains half closed even during the day, saying bright sunlight made it harder to read.

The room still smelled faintly of his shaving soap and cedar.

I felt the loss again, suddenly and sharply.

Then Daniel pointed toward the bookshelf.

“There's something on the floor.”

One book lay several feet from the shelf.

I recognized it immediately.

Dad's old financial planning book.

I had seen him reading it for years.

Daniel crouched.

“Was this normally there?”

“No.”

He examined the cover without opening it.

Then he looked at me.

“Do you know why someone might search this book?”

“No.”

I picked it up carefully.

Something slid from between the pages.

A small brass key struck the floor.

It made a tiny metallic sound.

Marcus, standing behind us, stared.

“What is that?”

I bent down.

The key was old, narrow, and slightly tarnished.

I turned it over.

No markings.

Samuel came closer.

His expression changed.

“Your father told me about that.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Not where it was.”

“What did he say?”

Samuel hesitated.

“He said that if he died before explaining everything, I should tell you to look for a brass key.”

My fingers tightened around it.

“Where?”

Samuel looked slowly around the room.

“Here.”

Marcus frowned.

“What does it open?”

“I don't know,” Samuel said.

I looked at the key again.

Dad had hidden it inside a book that an intruder had apparently searched.

That meant whoever entered the house might have known about the key.

Or they might simply have been searching for the same thing Dad expected me to find.

Daniel stood.

“We need to search the room.”

We checked the obvious places first.

The desk.

The bedside table.

The drawers.

The cabinet.

Nothing.

Daniel examined the backs of the paintings.

Nothing.

Samuel checked the floorboards near the bed.

Nothing.

Marcus opened the wardrobe.

“Dad hated anyone touching this.”

He ran his hand along the wooden frame.

“Why?”

“Because it belonged to our grandfather.”

He opened the doors.

Rows of Dad's clothes hung inside.

Winter coats.

Old suits.

A few shirts still carrying the faint scent of his cologne.

Boxes occupied the bottom shelf.

Marcus moved one aside.

“Nothing.”

I crouched.

The bottom of the wardrobe looked different from the rest.

There was a narrow wooden panel.

Almost invisible unless you knew where to look.

I ran my fingertips along the edge.

“There.”

Daniel crouched beside me.

“What?”

I pointed.

“A seam.”

He examined it.

Then he looked at the brass key.

I held it toward the lock.

It fit perfectly.

Nobody spoke.

I turned the key.

A small click came from inside the wood.

The panel released.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside was one envelope.

My name was written across it.

I felt my throat tighten.

Dad's handwriting.

Again.

I pulled it out.

The envelope contained no money.

No legal papers.

Only a photograph.

I stared at it.

Dad stood outside a small farmhouse.

Beside him was a woman I had never seen before.

She looked to be in her late thirties in the photograph, perhaps early forties. Her dark hair was pulled back, and she had one hand resting against the wooden fence.

Dad was smiling.

Not his polite business smile.

His real one.

The smile I remembered from family trips.

I turned the photograph over.

A sentence was written on the back.

Elena, if you find this, ask Marcus about the woman in the photograph.

I looked at my brother.

He had gone completely still.

“You know her.”

Marcus didn't answer.

“Marcus.”

His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

He swallowed.

“My father's old business partner.”

I frowned.

“Dad had business partners.”

“Not like her.”

“Then who was she?”

Marcus sat on the edge of the bed.

“Rebecca Hart.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Samuel, however, reacted.

He looked at Marcus sharply.

“Rebecca?”

Marcus nodded.

“You know her?”

Samuel's expression darkened.

“I knew of her.”

I looked between them.

“What happened?”

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“Dad and Rebecca started a small investment company years ago.”

“Why have I never heard of her?”

“Because she left.”

“That's what Dad told everyone?”

Marcus nodded.

“She didn't leave,” he added.

“She was pushed out.”

“By Dad?”

“No.”

His answer came too quickly.

I stared at him.

“Then by whom?”

Marcus looked down.

“Me.”

The word landed heavily.

Daniel straightened.

“Explain.”

Marcus took a long breath.

“I worked with Dad and Rebecca when I was younger. carefully.

“There is something written at the bottom.”

I turned it over.

A faded address appeared beneath the main note.

I recognized the place.

“That's Dad's farmhouse.”

Samuel nodded.

“The one north of town.”

I had almost forgotten it existed.

Dad called it his questions.”

I looked at the farmhouse address.

“We're going.”

Marcus stood.

“So am I.”

Daniel shook his back seat.

I could see his reflection in the window.

He looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

After nearly three hours, the farmhouse appeared beyond a line of tall trees.

The place looked exactly as I remembered.

Small.

Weathered.

Quiet.

The front door was locked.

Samuel tried the brass key.

It turned.

The door opened.

Dust hung in the air.

The house was almost empty.

Then we heard a sound toward the stairs.

Another creak came from above.

Someone was there.

And when we reached the top step, a bedroom door slowly opened.

A woman stood inside.

She looked older than she did in the photograph.

But I knew her immediately.

Rebecca Hart.

She looked at Marcus first.

Then at me.

Her expression held neither surprise nor fear.

Only sadness.

Finally, she said the words that made my heart stop.

“Your father knew you would
