It was legally his. He had sold it and transferred the proceeds into an account established under my name.

The amount had grown through the years.

That explained the balance.

It did not explain the divorce.

Then I reached the paragraph that changed everything.

Richard said someone had discovered he was collecting evidence.

That person had threatened him.

Not with losing his job.

Not with a lawsuit.

With me.

And with our children.

I lowered the letter.

The fluorescent lights above me suddenly seemed too bright.

“Mrs. Hayes?”

I looked at Karen.

“I'm fine.”

I wasn't.

I read the next page.

Richard wrote that the threats had been specific.

They knew where I worked.

They knew Daniel's school.

They knew where Emily spent her evenings.

They knew about the house.

They knew about our routines.

And they told him that if he spoke about the financial scheme, someone in his family would pay for it.

I stopped reading.

My mind went back to the last year of our marriage.

At the time, Richard had become strange.

He was distracted.

He received phone calls late at night and took them outside.

He locked the small office drawer in our bedroom.

He sometimes disappeared for an entire weekend.

He had come home once with blood on his shirt.

I had asked him what happened.

He told me it was nothing.

I had believed that was a lie.

I had assumed there was another woman.

The possibility had consumed me.

I had spent weeks wondering who she was.

What she looked like.

How long the affair had lasted.

Whether Richard loved her.

Now I wondered if I had been looking in completely the wrong direction.

I returned to the letter.

Richard admitted that he had deliberately allowed me to believe the worst.

He wanted me angry.

He wanted me to stop asking questions.

He wanted our children to believe he was selfish.

He wanted everyone to believe he had simply abandoned his family.

Because a hated husband was easier to forget than a missing witness.

My eyes filled with tears.

I hated that explanation.

I hated him for making me live through it.

And somehow, at the same time, I understood why he might have done it.

That contradiction hurt more than the original anger.

The manager returned to the desk.

“Mrs. Hayes, are you all right?”

I folded the letter.

“Is Richard alive?”

The manager looked at me.

Then he looked toward the
