I had not returned since our tenth anniversary.

Every turn brought back a memory I had not realized I still carried.

Richard standing beside the rental car, complaining about the cold.

Me laughing because he had forgotten his jacket.

The two of us walking toward the water with paper cups of coffee.

At the time, I had believed those memories belonged to a marriage that had ended.

Now I wondered whether they belonged to something Richard had been trying to preserve.

Thomas drove without much conversation.

Samuel had given him the address of the cabin.

When we finally reached it, the building looked smaller than I remembered.

The porch boards were weathered.

The windows were dark.

A rusted metal chair sat beneath the overhang.

I held the key.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

“Are you sure?” Thomas asked.

“No.”

He waited.

I inserted the key.

The lock turned.

The door opened with a long wooden groan.

Inside, dust covered the furniture.

The fireplace was cold.

There was an old table near the window.

And on that table sat a glass.

I stopped.

There was no reason for the glass to frighten me.

But it did.

Someone had been there.

Recently.

Thomas moved past me.

“Don't touch anything.”

I nodded.

He examined the room.

There were no signs of forced entry.

No broken locks.

No overturned furniture.

But the dust on the floor showed footprints.

Fresh ones.

I whispered, “Someone came here.”

Thomas nodded.

“Recently.”

My stomach tightened.

“Victor?”

“We don't know.”

He checked the back room.

I remained near the table.

On the wall hung an old photograph.

It was from our anniversary.

Richard and I were standing beside the lake.

We looked impossibly young.

I touched the frame.

Behind it was a small piece of paper.

I pulled it free.

A handwritten line.

Basement.

I looked at Thomas.

He followed my gaze.

“There's a basement?”

“I don't remember one.”

We searched the cabin.

Behind a bookshelf, Thomas found a narrow wooden door.

It was locked.

The key opened it.

A staircase descended into darkness.

The air smelled damp.

Thomas went first.

I followed.

At the bottom was a concrete room.

There were shelves.

Boxes.

A metal filing cabinet.

And a small desk.

On the desk sat another envelope.

My name was written on it.

I laughed softly.

“He really did love envelopes.”

Thomas didn't smile.

He was staring at the floor.

“What?”

He pointed.

A cigarette butt lay near the wall.

Fresh.

I felt the hair rise along my arms.

Someone had been in the basement.

Thomas reached for his phone.

“We need to leave.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Margaret.”

“I came here because Richard wanted me to find something.”

“And somebody else came here for the same reason.”

I stepped toward the desk.

“There has to be something here.”

Thomas blocked me.

“Not worth getting hurt.”

I looked at the envelope.

“What if that is why they came?”

He didn't answer.

We heard a sound upstairs.

A floorboard.

Then another.

Someone was walking across the cabin.

Thomas motioned for me to stay quiet.

We stood in darkness.

Footsteps crossed the room above us.

Then stopped.

A door opened.

Closed.

Silence.

Thomas whispered, “Stay here.”

He climbed the stairs.

I waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Then I heard the front door slam.

Thomas returned.

“Gone.”

“Who?”

“I didn't see them.”

He looked toward the envelope.

“We leave now.”

I nodded.

But before we went upstairs, I grabbed the envelope.

We drove until the cabin disappeared behind us.

Only then did Thomas tell me what he had found.

“The back door had been opened recently.”

“Could it have been the investigator?”

“No.”

“Then someone followed us.”

“Probably.”

I looked out the window.

The lake had vanished behind the trees.

“What was Richard keeping in that basement?”

“I don't know.”

“You knew about it.”

“I knew the cabin existed.”

“Not the basement?”

“No.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a bank locker.

Below it was a number.

Locker 314.

There was also a sentence.

The truth was never in one place.

I looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?”

He studied the photograph.

“I think Richard divided the evidence.”

“Why?”

“So no single person could destroy everything.”

I thought about the folders.

The bank account.

The house.

The recorder.

The cabin.

Every piece had been separated.

Richard had built a system designed to survive him.

And now someone was trying to dismantle it.

The bank locker was in a branch nearly two hours away.

We arrived shortly before closing.

The manager recognized Thomas.

After verifying my identity, he led us downstairs.

Locker 314 was small.

Inside was a metal box.

There were no documents.

Only a flash drive.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph.

It showed Richard standing beside Victor Hale.

They were younger.

Maybe fifteen years earlier.

Victor was smiling.

Richard was not.

On the back, Richard had written one sentence.

He was the first person I trusted with my life.

I stared at the words.

Then I turned to Thomas.

“Why would he write that?”

“Because he wanted you to understand that Victor wasn't always the enemy.”

I looked at the photograph again.

That explained the strange sadness in Richard's face.

The betrayal had not begun as a business dispute.

It had begun as friendship.

The flash drive contained dozens of files.

Financial statements.

Emails.

Scanned contracts.

Photographs.

And one folder labeled M.H.

My initials.

I opened it.

Inside were photographs of me.

Not recent photographs.

Photographs from twenty years earlier.

Me leaving work.

Me taking Daniel to school.

Me shopping with Linda.

Me at the old house.

Me at a family picnic.

My hands went cold.

“These aren't from the investigation,” I said.

Thomas leaned closer.

“No.”

“Why would Richard have these?”

He didn't answer.

There were hundreds.

Some showed me alone.

Others showed the children.

Some showed Linda.

Some showed Richard himself.

I opened another folder.

The dates went back nearly fifteen years.

That was before Richard discovered the fraud.

Or at least before he admitted discovering it.

I stared at the screen.

“Thomas.”

He looked at me.

“Something is wrong.”

“What?”

“Richard wasn't only investigating them.”

I pointed at the dates.

“He had been documenting our family years before the divorce.”

Thomas's face tightened.

“Maybe he was keeping records for protection.”

“From whom?”

We searched further.

Then we found a document dated fifteen years earlier.

It was a confidential report.

The first line read:

Potential compromise within Hayes family.

My pulse raced.

The report mentioned Victor.

It mentioned Linda.

And it mentioned a person whose name I had never seen before.

Evelyn Carter.

Thomas went completely still.

“Who is she?”

He stared at the screen.

“Richard's former employer.”

“The Carter in Hayes & Carter?”

“Yes.”

“Why is she in this report?”

“Because she owned half the company.”

I scrolled.

The report said Richard had suspected Evelyn of using Victor to move money.

But there was more.

It said Evelyn had known about the financial scheme before Richard did.

And she had been watching our family.

For years.

I leaned back.

“All this time, we thought Victor was the mastermind.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Maybe he wasn't.”

The room seemed to grow colder.

“Then who was?”

Thomas didn't answer.

The flash drive contained one final audio file.

I pressed play.

Richard's voice filled the room.

“If Margaret finds this file, then the first layer has already failed.”

I looked at Thomas.

Richard continued.

“Victor was never the person I was most afraid of.”

My breathing stopped.

“He was dangerous, but he was useful.”

Thomas whispered, “Useful?”

The recording continued.

“The person who built the system was someone I trusted completely.”

A pause.

“Someone Margaret knows.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

Thomas looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was no text.

Only a photograph.

It showed the front of my house.

Taken that afternoon.

Beneath it was a sentence.

You are looking in the wrong direction.

I felt the blood leave my face.

Thomas took the phone from my hand.

“We're not going home.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because whoever sent this knows where you are.”

I thought about the names in Richard's files.

Linda.

Victor.

Evelyn.

Then another possibility occurred to me.

Someone had known exactly when we left for the lake.

Someone had known about the cabin.

Someone had known about the locker.

This was not someone reacting to our investigation.

This was someone anticipating it.

And that meant Richard's plan had been compromised long before I ever opened the $3,000 card.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The
