7 – The Name Richard Feared Most Was Familiar to Me, and the Evidence Forced Me to Reconsider Who Had Really Been Protecting Whom

We spent the night in a hotel under a name Thomas arranged through one of his professional contacts.

I barely slept.

Every time headlights moved across the curtains, I woke.

Every sound in the hallway seemed too deliberate.

At three in the morning, I finally stopped pretending I could rest and sat beside the window.

The city below was almost empty.

I thought about Richard.

I thought about the photograph.

I thought about the first report dated fifteen years earlier.

And I thought about Evelyn Carter.

The woman whose surname appeared on the company where Richard had worked.

The woman I had met only twice.

The woman I remembered as elegant, reserved, and almost unnervingly observant.

I had never liked her.

I had never had a reason not to.

That was the problem.

I had trusted my instincts about Richard.

My instincts had been wrong.

I had trusted Linda.

That had been worse.

Now I did not know whether my instincts were useful at all.

At six in the morning, Thomas entered the room carrying two cups of coffee.

“You were awake.”

“I don't think I've slept.”

He handed me a cup.

“Neither have I.”

I looked at him.

“Tell me everything you know about Evelyn.”

Thomas sat opposite me.

“She inherited the company from her father.”

“Was she married?”

“Once.”

“Children?”

“One daughter.”

“Who?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Claire Carter.”

The name meant nothing.

“Where is she now?”

“That's complicated.”

“Everything is complicated.”

He nodded.

“Claire disappeared eight years ago.”

I stared at him.

“Disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“Was she reported missing?”

“Yes.”

“Was she found?”

“No.”

I remembered the report.

The date.

Eight years earlier.

Two years before my divorce.

“Does Richard mention her?”

Thomas opened his laptop.

“Several times.”

He turned the screen toward me.

There were emails.

Richard had written about Claire.

He believed she had discovered something about her mother.

Something involving Victor.

Something involving the company.

Then she disappeared.

I felt a chill.

“Richard thought Evelyn had something to do with her daughter's disappearance.”

“Yes.”

“And he never told the police?”

“He tried.”

“What happened?”

“Evidence disappeared.”

I stared at him.

“From the police?”

“From the case file.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at the screen.

Richard had written one sentence repeatedly.

Trust the paper trail, not the people.

That sounded like him.

Numbers.

Dates.

Documents.

Things that could not become nervous or change their stories.

I spent the morning reading the files.

By noon, I had learned more about my husband's life than I had in thirty-seven years of marriage.

He had kept meticulous notes.

Not emotional diaries.

Evidence.

Dates.

Phone numbers.

Property transfers.

Names.

He had even recorded conversations.

The strange thing was that he rarely wrote about himself.

He wrote about other people.

About what they did.

About what they said.

About what they might be hiding.

Then I found something different.

A page dated six years before our divorce.

My name appeared at the top.

Margaret.

Under it were three words.

She must not know.

I stared at them.

“What was he hiding from me then?”

Thomas read the page.

“We need the original context.”

“There isn't one.”

“There might be.”

He searched the database.

Another document appeared.

It was a private insurance policy.

Richard had purchased it in my name.

The policy was substantial.

The beneficiary was me.

The date was six years before our divorce.

My hands went cold.

“He was preparing.”

Thomas nodded.

“For what?”

“I don't know.”

I stared at the document.

Then another memory surfaced.

Six years before our divorce, Richard had started insisting that I keep certain papers in a safe deposit box.

I had complained that he was becoming paranoid.

He had smiled and said, “Maybe I'm finally learning.”

I had forgotten.

Now I remembered.

He had also changed the locks on the house.

Installed better lighting.

Asked me to stop telling strangers when we would be away.

At the time, I had thought he was becoming controlling.

Maybe he had been frightened.

But then I found the document that made me question him again.

A transfer from one of Richard's private accounts.

The recipient was Evelyn Carter.

The amount was fifty thousand dollars.

The date was shortly before Claire disappeared.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why did Richard pay her?”

“I don't know.”

“You're his attorney.”

“I wasn't his attorney then.”

“What were you?”

“His accountant's attorney.”

That answer confused me.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas sighed.

“Richard didn't officially retain me until after the divorce.”

“So who was his attorney before?”

Thomas looked away.

I knew immediately.

“Who?”

He finally said the name.

“Daniel Mercer.”

I recognized it.

He had represented Richard during the divorce.

The same attorney who had told me Richard was willing to give me the house if I stopped contesting the other assets.

The same attorney who had encouraged me to accept a modest settlement.

My stomach turned.

“Is he connected to Evelyn?”

Thomas didn't answer.

I pulled up the records.

Daniel Mercer had received payments from Hayes & Carter.

Repeatedly.

For years.

I felt sick.

“Everyone was connected.”

“Not everyone.”

I looked at Thomas.

“Who wasn't?”

“Richard.”

I almost laughed.

“Richard lied to me for years.”

“Yes.”

“He hid money.”

“Yes.”

“He made me believe he didn't care.”

“Yes.”

“And you're telling me he was the innocent one?”

“No.”

Thomas looked directly at me.

“I'm telling you he was trying to survive.”

That distinction mattered.

I closed the laptop.

“I need to speak with my sister.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“She is part of an active investigation.”

“She is still my sister.”

“She may also be a source of information.”

“I don't care.”

Thomas stared at me.

“Then call her through law enforcement.”

I did.

Linda agreed to speak.

We met in a secure room that afternoon.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Smaller.

I sat across from her.

“You knew about Evelyn.”

Linda looked down.

“Some of it.”

“Did you know about Claire?”

She nodded.

“What happened to her?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you ever meet her?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before you married Richard.”

I stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Richard told me not to.”

I almost stood.

“Richard told you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he was trying to find her.”

My anger faltered.

“What does Claire have to do with us?”

Linda looked at the table.

“Everything.”

She explained that Claire had discovered financial records connecting her mother to Victor.

She had copied them.

Then she disappeared.

Richard believed Claire had been murdered.

But he could never prove it.

Linda had been frightened.

Victor knew she had spoken to Richard.

He threatened her.

She accepted money.

She told him information about the family.

I closed my eyes.

“You sold me.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“I did.”

I looked at her.

“Why did Richard keep protecting you?”

“He didn't.”

“What?”

“He stopped me.”

She looked up.

“After he found out what I had done, he confronted me.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me that if I ever gave them information again, he would turn everything over to the police.”

“Then why didn't he?”

“He gave me one chance.”

I stared at her.

“What chance?”

“To help him expose them.”

My heart began pounding.

“Did you?”

She started crying.

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“I failed.”

“How?”

Linda looked toward the door.

Then she lowered her voice.

“I gave them something I shouldn't have.”

“What?”

“Your location.”

The room went silent.

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

The day of the divorce.

I felt cold.

“That's why Richard made me hate him.”

Linda nodded.

“He knew they were coming.”

I stared at her.

“What did he do?”

“He made sure you left with nothing that could connect you to him.”

“Except the card.”

“Yes.”

“And the house.”

“Yes.”

“And the money.”

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

“Did he know he was going to die?”

Linda shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who sent me the photograph?”

“I don't know.”

I believed her.

For the first time in years, I believed my sister.

Then she said something that made me stop breathing.

“Margaret, there was another person.”

“Who?”

“The person Richard trusted before everyone else.”

I waited.

“Who?”

Linda's eyes filled with tears.

“Your son.”

I stared at her.

“Daniel?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Not Daniel.”

She swallowed.

“Emily.”

I felt the room disappear around me.

My daughter.

The child I had protected.

The one person I had never suspected.

“That isn't possible.”

Linda leaned closer.

“Richard trusted her because he believed she was the only one who knew where he kept the original evidence.”

My hands went numb.

“Where?”

Linda whispered the answer.

“At your old house.”

That evening, Thomas and I drove to the house.

My house.

The house Richard had secretly kept in my name.

The house we had been told to avoid.

We entered through the side door.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Then I noticed something.

The old kitchen cabinet above the refrigerator.

Richard had always kept useless things there.

Spare batteries.

Old receipts.

A broken flashlight.

I opened it.

There was a wooden box.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Richard's.

But the name at the top was not mine.

Emily.

I stared at it.

Thomas stood behind me.

“Don't open it yet.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if Richard trusted your daughter with the final evidence, we need to know whether she knew what she was carrying.”

I turned the envelope over.

The seal was intact.

Then I noticed something else.

The date.

It had been written two days before Richard's death.

And beneath the date was a sentence.

If Emily gives you this, she has finally chosen which side she is on.

I looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

The house was silent.

Then, from upstairs, we heard a door close.

Thomas reached for my arm.

Someone was inside.

<a
