10 – The Signature That Wasn’t Mine Led Back to a Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave, and Richard Had Left Proof Behind

I spent the night reading the old documents.

Thomas arranged for copies to be made, while the investigators continued tracing the financial transfers.

I could not stop thinking about my mother's name.

She had died believing she had protected me.

At least, that was what I had always thought.

She had been strict about money.

Careful with documents.

Suspicious of strangers.

She had also disliked Evelyn Carter.

I remembered that.

When I was younger, I once asked why.

She said, “Some people smile because they want you to stop asking questions.”

I had laughed.

She had not.

Now I wondered whether she had known exactly what she meant.

The next morning, I returned to my mother's old house.

It had been sold years ago.

But the buyer had agreed to let us search the basement because the property was part of the investigation.

The basement smelled of damp concrete.

My mother's old filing cabinet remained in one corner.

Most of the drawers were empty.

One was locked.

Thomas tried several keys.

None worked.

Then Emily noticed a small wooden box on a shelf.

Inside was a key.

The lock opened immediately.

There were letters.

Dozens.

All written by my mother.

Most were ordinary.

Bills.

Insurance.

Family matters.

But the final envelope was different.

It had never been mailed.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

My mother's handwriting was shaky.

She wrote that there were people connected to my father's business who wanted access to our family's property.

She said my father had refused.

Then she mentioned Arthur.

Arthur had approached her years before my wedding.

He had asked her to sign documents transferring certain rights.

She refused.

After that, she became frightened.

She suspected someone had forged her signature.

The letter ended with a warning.

If anything happens to me, never trust anyone who says the paperwork is already settled.

I sat on the basement floor.

My mother had been afraid.

For years, I had thought she was simply anxious.

She had known.

She had known something was wrong.

But there was more.

A second letter mentioned Richard.

My mother wrote that she liked him immediately.

She said he was one of the few people who asked questions before accepting answers.

That sentence made me cry.

She had seen the quality in him that I had forgotten.

Then she wrote something else.

Richard believes the problem is Arthur.

He is wrong.

I froze.

The next line was underlined.

Arthur is only protecting someone else.

I looked at Thomas.

“Someone else.”

He read the letter.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

We searched the remaining papers.

Nothing.

Then Emily found a photograph.

It showed my mother, Arthur, and another woman.

The woman was younger.

I recognized her.

Evelyn Carter.

The date was thirty-eight years before my divorce.

Before my marriage.

Before Richard.

Before the company.

The three of them had known one another.

That changed the entire history.

I looked at the photograph.

“What were they doing together?”

Thomas said, “We need to find out.”

The police located a retired accountant who had worked for my father.

His name was Harold Mason.

He lived in a nursing facility outside the city.

He agreed to speak with us.

When he saw the photograph, his expression changed.

“I haven't seen that in decades.”

“What is it?” I asked.

“A warning.”

“About whom?”

“Evelyn.”

I leaned forward.

Harold explained that Evelyn had been involved in a property scheme with my father.

Arthur had acted as intermediary.

My father discovered that the properties were being undervalued before resale.

He refused to participate.

Then threats began.

My mother became frightened.

My father wanted to go to the police.

Before he could, he died.

The official cause was a heart attack.

I felt cold.

“Was it?”

Harold looked at me.

“I never believed it.”

“What happened afterward?”

“Your mother tried to sell the family properties.”

“And?”

“Documents appeared showing that your father had transferred them.”

“He hadn't.”

“No.”

Harold lowered his voice.

“They had forged his signature.”

My hands shook.

“And my mother?”

“She fought them.”

“Did she win?”

Harold smiled sadly.

“Your mother was stubborn.”

I almost laughed.

That sounded like her.

“She saved the house,” he continued.

“Which house?”

“Yours.”

The old family house.

The same property Richard later protected.

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because your mother believed the house was the only asset they could not take without exposing the fraud.”

That explained everything.

Richard had inherited the same suspicion.

He had preserved the house because he knew its history.

And he had kept the account because he knew the house and the money were connected.

Harold gave us another piece of information.

“My father had a private ledger.”

“Where?”

“Your mother took it.”

“Where did she put it?”

He looked at me.

“She trusted Richard.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Richard had it?”

“Apparently.”

I asked why he had never told me.

Harold smiled faintly.

“Perhaps he wanted you to live a normal life.”

I looked down.

There it was again.

That terrible pattern.

Everyone deciding what I could survive.

Everyone protecting me by withholding the truth.

When we returned to the house, Thomas searched the records.

He found a reference to the ledger.

It had been transferred to a storage facility shortly before Richard's death.

The facility was under a company name.

The company belonged to Daniel Mercer.

The dead attorney.

We obtained access through a court order.

The unit was nearly empty.

There were boxes.

Old legal files.

A broken desk.

And one metal case.

Inside was the ledger.

I opened it.

The pages were filled with names.

Payments.

Property addresses.

Dates.

And one column labeled beneficiaries.

I recognized several names.

Victor.

Evelyn.

Arthur.

Michael.

Then my mother's name.

Beside it was the word refused.

My father.

Refused.

Richard.

Protected.

Linda.

Compromised.

Daniel.

Unaware.

Emily.

Trusted.

I stopped.

My name appeared last.

Margaret.

Protected.

I stared at the page.

Then I noticed a second notation.

Bait.

My heart stopped.

“Thomas.”

He read it.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

But I did.

The three thousand dollars.

The account.

The divorce.

The house.

Maybe I had never been merely protected.

Maybe I had also been used.

I looked at the dates.

Richard had moved the money into my name after discovering the network.

He had made the account look insignificant.

He had used me as a place to hide the evidence.

If someone came searching, they would look for Richard's assets.

They would not look at the abandoned wife.

The realization hurt.

I had been safe because I had been underestimated.

The ledger contained another clue.

A final page.

Richard had written it.

He explained that the financial network was only part of the operation.

The real goal was property.

Specifically, property belonging to families who had resisted Evelyn.

The Hayes family had been one of them.

Richard had spent years tracing ownership.

He discovered that the old house was the central asset.

Whoever controlled it could expose the original fraud.

That was why they wanted it.

That was why the divorce had been structured around it.

That was why the house remained mine.

And that was why someone had recently entered it.

Thomas closed the ledger.

“Now we know what they want.”

I looked at him.

“The house.”

“Yes.”

“Then why haven't they taken it?”

“Because they can't.”

I thought about the forged signature.

“Unless they can prove I transferred it.”

Thomas nodded.

“And that may be the next step.”

That evening, we returned to my house.

A car was parked across the street.

I recognized it.

Michael Bennett.

He stepped out.

He looked toward my front door.

Then toward the windows.

He saw me.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he crossed the street.

“Margaret.”

I opened the door but did not invite him inside.

“What do you want?”

He looked exhausted.

“I need to tell you the truth.”

“You've had decades.”

“I know.”

“Why now?”

“Because Evelyn is dead.”

I froze.

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

Thomas appeared behind me.

Michael continued.

“She was killed before she could testify.”

I stared at him.

“Who killed her?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

Then he reached into his coat.

Thomas moved immediately.

Michael stopped.

“It's a key.”

He placed it on the porch.

“This belonged to my father.”

I looked at it.

“What does it open?”

“The place where he kept the original agreements.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because my father wasn't the one controlling everything.”

“Then who was?”

Michael looked directly at me.

“The person who forged your mother's signature.”

My breath caught.

“Who?”

He looked toward the house.

“Your father.”

I stared at him.

“That can't be true.”

Michael shook his head.

“Your father wasn't a victim.”

He took a step backward.

“He was the beginning.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: My Father Wasn’t the Victim I
