Marlow.

Of course it did.

Richard had always understood the power of returning to the beginning.

The cabin stood exactly as we had left it, except someone had repaired the broken window.

The porch had been swept.

A light glowed behind the curtains.

Thomas stopped the car.

“I'll go first.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“This time, I go first.”

He studied my face.

Then he nodded.

I stepped out.

The lake was calm.

The air smelled of pine and damp earth.

I walked toward the cabin alone.

My hand shook when I reached the door.

I knocked.

Nothing.

I knocked again.

The door opened.

Richard stood there.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

He looked older.

Much older.

His hair was mostly gray.

There was a scar near his temple.

He leaned slightly to one side.

But his eyes were the same.

I knew those eyes.

I had loved them.

I had hated them.

I had missed them.

Now they looked terrified.

“Margaret.”

My name broke something inside me.

I stepped forward.

Then stopped.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let me mourn you.”

“I know.”

“You let me hate you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

I slapped him.

The sound echoed through the room.

He did not move.

I slapped him again.

Then I began crying.

He reached toward him.

“How long?”

“Five years.”

“You were alive for five years?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Not all of them.”

He explained that after the crash, he survived with serious injuries.

He believed Michael's people were still searching.

He disappeared.

For months, he moved between safe locations.

He stayed in contact with Claire.

Eventually, he realized that returning to me would expose me.

So he waited.

“What about the photograph?”

“I sent it.”

“The one saying you were alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To give you the truth without bringing danger to your door.”

“You already brought danger.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

“I was wrong.”

I stared at him.

“You were wrong about a lot.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know what those years were like?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You don't know what it felt like to wake up every morning believing your husband had chosen another life.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“You don't know what it was like to think I wasn't worth fighting for.”

“I do.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don't get to say that.”

He nodded.

“You're right.”

Silence filled the room.

Then I asked the question I had carried for five years.

“Did you ever stop loving me?”

He looked directly at me.

“No.”

The answer came without hesitation.

I hated how much I believed him.

I hated that part of me had never stopped wanting to hear it.

But love was no longer enough.

“Why didn't you trust me?”

Richard looked toward the lake.

“Because I thought if you knew the truth, you would choose me.”

“And?”

“And I didn't want you to have to choose.”

I stared at him.

“That isn't trust.”

“No.”

“It is control.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I understand that now.”

I sat down.

He remained standing.

We talked for hours.

He told me everything he could remember.

The investigation.

The threats.

The financial network.

The crash.

His escape.

His decision to let the world believe he had died.

He admitted that he had watched from a distance.

Once, he saw me at the grocery store.

Another time, he saw Daniel.

He had wanted to approach me.

He had not.

“Why send the photograph now?”

“Because the network was collapsing.”

“And because you knew I had found Claire.”

“Yes.”

He looked exhausted.

“I thought I had one final chance to tell you the truth.”

I asked about Michael.

Richard said Michael had helped him at first.

Later, he had become uncertain.

Michael had not ordered the original crash.

Victor had.

But Michael had concealed information afterward.

That was why Richard had stopped trusting him.

“Then who ordered the crash?”

“Daniel Mercer Jr.”

I stared.

“He said Michael did.”

“Daniel was protecting himself.”

Richard explained that Daniel had manipulated both Victor and Michael.

He had arranged the crash through a third party.

He had then convinced Michael that Richard was dead.

Michael believed the lie.

That was why he had been surprised when Richard contacted him.

The evidence on the flash drive proved Daniel's role.

Thomas had already sent it to investigators.

Daniel would be arrested.

But Richard wasn't finished.

“There is one more thing.”

I sighed.

“Of course there is.”

He almost smiled.

“I deserve that.”

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a final folder.

He handed it to me.

“This is about your father.”

I opened it.

The documents showed that my father had indeed participated in the original scheme.

But there was something I had not known.

He had spent the final year of his life trying to expose Evelyn.

He had written letters.

He had contacted investigators.

He had prepared a confession.

Then he died.

The official report had called it a heart attack.

Richard had always suspected otherwise.

The evidence now showed that my father's medication had been tampered with.

Evelyn had not merely inherited the network.

She had protected it.

For decades.

My mother had discovered the truth.

She had tried to expose it.

Arthur had helped her.

That was why he had remained close to our family.

He had not been the mastermind.

He had been trying to repair what he helped create.

I closed the folder.

“So my father wasn't completely innocent.”

“No.”

“But he tried to fix it.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Richard.

“You knew this before our divorce.”

“Yes.”

“You could have told me.”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“I don't know whether I can forgive you.”

“You don't have to.”

That answer was different from the Richard I remembered.

He wasn't asking.

He wasn't controlling the outcome.

He was accepting it.

I stood.

“Are you coming home?”

He looked surprised.

“I don't know.”

“That wasn't what I asked.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I want to.”

“Then come home.”

He stepped toward me.

This time, I didn't move away.

He stopped before touching me.

I reached for his hand.

His fingers were cold.

We stood there beside the lake.

Not husband and wife.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

Just two people who had survived something neither of us had understood when it began.

When we returned to the city, the arrests began.

Daniel Mercer Jr. was taken into custody.

Victor agreed to testify.

Michael surrendered the remaining financial records.

Linda testified against the network.

The old property scheme collapsed.

The court began unwinding decades of fraudulent transfers.

The money in my account was confirmed as legitimate.

The house remained mine.

Richard's name was cleared of the allegations that had surrounded him.

But clearing his name did not erase what he had done to me.

We began slowly.

Coffee.

Walks.

Short conversations.

No promises.

No pretending.

He slept in the guest room.

Sometimes we sat together without speaking.

Sometimes we argued.

Sometimes he apologized.

Sometimes I told him that an apology was not enough.

He accepted that too.

Months later, he asked me whether I wanted to sell the house.

I said no.

I wanted to keep it.

Not because of the money.

Because it had finally become something different.

It was no longer the house where my marriage had died.

It was the house where the truth had finally been found.

One evening, I found Richard standing in the kitchen.

He was washing a cup.

I laughed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“You're doing dishes.”

“I've been doing them for thirty-seven years.”

“Not recently.”

He smiled.

It was the first real smile I had seen from him in years.

I took a towel.

We stood beside each other.

For a moment, it felt ordinary.

And ordinary had become precious.

Then Richard said quietly, “I should have told you.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“I should have trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“I should have let you decide.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I can't change those years.”

“No.”

“But I can stop making decisions for you.”

I smiled.

“That would be a good start.”

He reached for my hand.

This time, I let him hold it.

Outside, the evening light faded across the yard.

The past had not disappeared.

It had simply stopped demanding that we live inside it.

But one final document remained.

Richard had kept it separate from everything else.

He told me I could read it whenever I wanted.

I opened it that night.

It was not a legal document.

It was a letter.

And the first line made me stop.

Margaret, if we are reading this together, then I was given something I never believed I deserved.

A second chance.

I looked across the room.

Richard was standing by the window.

I folded the letter.

I wasn't ready to read the rest.

Not yet.

For once, there was no urgency.

No threat.

No secret waiting to destroy us.

There was only tomorrow.

And after everything we had lost, tomorrow was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: After Five
