house?”

“I thought the police were outside.”

We both looked through the window.

A patrol car was parked at the curb.

An officer stood beside you hear anything?”

“No.”

The police entered.

They secured the house.

An officer checked the window.

Locked.

Another checked the bathroom.

Empty.

The front door had remained under observation.

Nobody had seen anyone leave.

Then I saw something on Lily’s pillow.

A folded piece of paper.

I picked it up.

Daniel stopped me.

“Gloves.”

An officer handed me a pair.

I opened it.

One sentence.

Come to the bridge.

Alone.

My stomach dropped.

“The old bridge?”

Daniel nodded.

“The same bridge where Michael supposedly died.”

I looked at the clock.

12:18 a.m.

The threat had been sent less than ten minutes earlier.

He had taken Lily while the police were outside.

That meant either someone had entered through a route we hadn't found, or someone already inside the house had helped him.

I looked at my mother’s face in my mind.

Then my father’s.

Then Evan.

No.

I couldn't start accusing everyone again.

Detective Morris arrived.

He read the note.

“We're not sending you alone.”

“He said alone.”

“That doesn't mean we obey him.”

“He has my daughter.”

“We'll get her back.”

“You don't know that.”

He looked directly at me.

“We have resources.”

I shook my head.

“I have a daughter.”

That was the only thing that mattered.

Daniel took me aside.

“You can't go without protection.”

“I know.”

“But if Michael is watching the police, he may expect surveillance.”

“Then how do we find him?”

“We use the message.”

Detective Morris agreed.

They prepared an unmarked vehicle.

I wore a recording device beneath my jacket.

The plan was simple.

I would approach the bridge.

Police would stay far enough away not to be seen.

If Michael appeared, they would move in.

I didn't like it.

But there was no alternative.

The old bridge was twenty minutes outside town.

The road was nearly empty.

Rain had begun again.

As we approached, I saw a light beneath the bridge.

One flashlight.

Then another.

My heart hammered.

The police vehicle stopped behind a line of trees.

I stepped out.

“Lily?”

No answer.

I walked toward the bridge.

The river below was swollen from the rain.

“Michael!”

A voice answered from the darkness.

“You came.”

I froze.

A man stepped into view.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Older than the photograph.

But unmistakably the same face.

Michael Vance.

I had never met him.

Yet something about seeing him made my body recognize the danger before my mind did.

“Where is my daughter?”

He smiled faintly.

“She isn't your hardened.

“She belongs to herself.”

For a moment, I didn't know what to say.

Then I heard movement behind him.

“Lily?”

A voice answered.

“Mom!”

She was tied to a chair beneath the bridge.

Alive.

Terrified.

I stepped forward.

Michael raised a hand.

“Stay there.”

I stopped.

“Let her go.”

“Bring me the records.”

“I don't have them.”

“You do.”

“I don't.”

He laughed quietly.

“Your father always taught you to lie well.”

I looked at him.

“You framed Lily.”

“I warned you.”

“You stole my car.”

“I needed the police to believe she was involved.”

“Why?”

“To force your family into the open.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“I never touched her.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“She followed me.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She wanted answers.”

Lily shouted, “That's not true!”

Michael turned.

“Be quiet.”

She flinched.

I stepped forward.

“Don't speak to her like that.”

His face changed.

For a moment, I saw something human in him.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“Your father has lied to you for twenty-seven years.”

“You lied too.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I believe anything you say?”

“You shouldn't.”

That answer surprised me.

Michael reached into his jacket.

I tensed.

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed my father and another man standing beside a bank vault.

The second man was Michael.

On the back was a date.

The night before the bridge accident.

“You want to know what happened?”

“Yes.”

“Your father transferred the money.”

My heart sank.

“To where?”

“An account in your name.”

I stared at him.

“My name?”

“You were three months old.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Ask your father.”

I looked toward Lily.

“Why bring her into this?”

“Because she was the only thing your father could not control.”

I felt sick.

“You're blaming my daughter for something she had nothing to do with.”

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“I am protecting her.”

“By kidnapping her?”

“By keeping her alive.”

A shot cracked through the darkness.

Michael dropped behind the concrete support.

Police shouted.

Lily screamed.

I ran toward her.

An officer tackled me down.

“Stay down!”

Another shot.

Then silence.

When I lifted my head, Michael was gone.

The chair was empty.

Lily was gone too.

“No!”

I scrambled toward the place where she had been.

A narrow tunnel opened behind the bridge support.

Detective Morris shouted for officers to search it.

I followed.

The tunnel led beneath the road.

At the far end, we found a vehicle.

Empty.

The rear door stood open.

Inside was Lily’s backpack.

Her phone.

And a bloodstained piece of fabric.

I stared at it.

“It’s not hers,” the detective said.

“How do you know?”

“There's no blood on the backpack.”

I looked closer.

The fabric belonged to a dark jacket.

A silver button remained attached.

Evan’s jacket.

Again.

The same jacket that had been connected to the Civic.

Someone was deliberately leaving Evan’s belongings behind.

Daniel arrived.

He looked at the evidence.

“Where is Evan?”

The detective shook his head.

“Still in custody.”

I stared at the empty vehicle.

“Then someone else has his jacket.”

A police radio crackled.

An officer shouted from outside.

“We found tracks.”

We followed.

Footprints led toward the river.

Then stopped.

There was no boat.

No second vehicle.

Nothing.

I stood in the rain.

My daughter was gone.

Michael was gone.

And Evan was still locked up.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

You trusted the wrong man.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who?”

Another message appeared.

Your father knows where Lily is.

I called my father.

He answered on the first ring.

“Where is she?”

Silence.

“Dad, where is Lily?”

His voice was barely audible.

“I don't know.”

“Michael says you do.”

Another silence.

Then my father whispered,

“Don't trust Michael.”

“I don't.”

“You shouldn't trust me either.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then I understood.

The person who had been manipulating us all along might not be Michael.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: My Father’s Final Confession Revealed the Person Who Had Controlled the
