Evan stayed with Lily while I followed Michael through the nearly empty streets. The station lights reflected against the wet pavement, and the sound of an approaching train echoed through the darkness.

Michael kept checking his phone.

No message from Daniel.

“He knows we're coming,” I said.

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know what he knows.”

We entered through a side entrance.

The station was almost empty.

A cleaner pushed a cart across the far platform. Two passengers sat beneath a digital timetable. Somewhere above us, an announcement repeated in a calm voice.

Then Michael stopped.

“There.”

A man stood near the end of the platform.

Daniel.

Or David.

He wore a dark coat and held a leather folder beneath one arm.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Daniel looked older than I had remembered him. Not physically older, but burdened. His face carried the expression of someone who had spent too many nights awake with questions he couldn't answer.

His eyes moved to Michael.

Then to me.

Finally, to Lily.

“Is it true?” he asked.

Michael walked toward him.

“What did you hear?”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That isn't an answer.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were copies of birth records.

Two names appeared on different documents.

Daniel Vance.

David Vance.

Same birth date.

Same hospital.

Different identities.

Daniel's hand shook.

“My whole life,” he said, “I thought someone had made a clerical mistake.”

Michael stopped several feet away.

“It wasn't a mistake.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You're my father.”

Michael nodded.

Daniel looked at Lily.

“And she's my sister.”

Lily stepped forward.

“I think so.”

Daniel's expression broke.

He looked away.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then he reached inside the folder and pulled out a photograph.

It showed a young Michael holding a newborn baby.

The baby wore a tiny silver pendant.

The same pendant Lily had found.

Michael stared at the photograph.

“I thought that was destroyed.”

“It wasn't.”

“Where did you get it?”

“From my grandfather.”

The words made Michael go still.

“Your grandfather?”

Daniel nodded.

“The man who raised me.”

That revelation changed everything.

Daniel explained that he had grown up believing his father had died before he could remember him. The family that raised him had never spoken about his birth. Whenever he asked questions, he was told the past was dangerous.

But years ago, Daniel discovered a locked box.

Inside were documents bearing the name Daniel Vance.

He had spent years trying to understand them.

Then he became an attorney.

And eventually, he crossed paths with Lily.

“I didn't know she was my sister,” he said.

Lily stared at him.

“Then why did you help me?”

“Because you were being framed.”

His voice hardened.

“And because someone was using the same methods I had seen in my own records.”

He opened the folder again.

“There were payments made to officials after your accident.”

I looked at the pages.

Several names appeared.

One belonged to the same official who had signed Lily's original accident report.

Another belonged to a financial intermediary connected to Michael's father.

The third name was unfamiliar.

But beside it was an account number.

Michael recognized it.

“That account belonged to my father.”

Daniel nodded.

“Not anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“It was transferred into a trust twenty-seven years ago.”

Michael's face changed.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

Daniel removed another document.

“The trust is still active.”

Lily leaned over the papers.

Her name appeared on the beneficiary line.

Her name.

Not Michael's.

Not Daniel's.

Lily's.

The trust had been created shortly after Daniel disappeared.

The beneficiary structure had been designed so that the estate would eventually pass to Michael's children.

Both children.

But someone had altered the records to make it appear that Michael had only one child.

Lily.

That meant the missing second ledger was not merely a record of criminal payments.

It contained proof of ownership.

Proof of inheritance.

Proof that someone had manipulated the family structure for twenty-seven years.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The basement ledger was designed to be found.”

Michael stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because it tells a story that points toward the wrong people.”

I remembered the message.

*You found the wrong ledger.**

Daniel nodded when I repeated it.

“They want you to keep looking in the basement.”

“Then where is the real one?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“She has it.”

Lily frowned.

“What?”

“Not physically.”

He pointed toward her.

“Your birth records.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel opened another folder.

“Your mother was listed as the beneficiary contact for the trust.”

I felt cold.

“My name?”

“Yes.”

“But I never knew about any trust.”

“Because the records were altered.”

Daniel handed me a copy.

The signature looked like mine.

But it wasn't.

I knew immediately.

Someone had forged my name.

Michael's father had not merely hidden his grandson.

He had built an entire alternate history around us.

The crash was now beginning to make sense.

Someone had discovered that the old records were being uncovered.

They needed Lily discredited.

They needed me frightened.

And they needed Daniel silenced.

Daniel closed the folder.

“There is one place left.”

“Where?”

“The original family house.”

Michael looked at him.

“My father's house?”

Daniel nodded.

“He kept a private room beneath the floor.”

Michael's expression hardened.

“I searched that house years ago.”

“You searched the rooms he allowed you to see.”

Daniel reached into his coat.

He produced a small brass key.

“He never gave this to me.”

“Then how did you get it?”

Daniel looked toward the station entrance.

“I found it in my grandfather's belongings after he died.”

Before anyone could say more, a train thundered through the station.

The noise swallowed our voices.

When it passed, Daniel was looking directly at Michael.

“There are two ledgers.”

Michael nodded.

“The first tells you who was paid.”

“And the second?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“It tells you why.”

Lily swallowed.

“What happens if we find it?”

Daniel's answer was quiet.

“Then the people who caused the accident won't have anywhere left to hide.”

We left the station together.

For the first time, Michael walked beside Daniel rather than several steps ahead.

They were strangers who shared the same blood.

Father and son.

Separated by a lie that had lasted twenty-seven years.

And as we drove toward the old family house, I realized something even more frightening.

The people who had framed Lily were not trying to steal something new.

They were trying to protect something they had already stolen.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: THE BOY WHO WAS
