her.

“Not us?”

“No.”

The answer came firmly.

“I made that decision. I tell him.”

That was responsibility.

Finally.

Dad arrived forty minutes later.

He walked in carrying the hotel receipt and stopped when he saw our faces.

“What happened now?”

Mom stood.

“Can we talk privately?”

His expression tightened.

“After today, that sentence terrifies me.”

“I know.”

She looked toward me.

“Dana, may we use the living room?”

The question mattered.

“Yes.”

They moved away from the kitchen.

Victor started gathering his files.

I looked at him.

“Stay.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because after Dad knows, there are no more partial audiences.”

He nodded.

We waited.

Mom’s voice carried faintly from the living room.

Not words.

Just tone.

Low.

Uneven.

Then silence.

A long silence.

Dad said something.

Mom answered.

Another silence.

Then Dad walked through the kitchen without looking at any of us and went out the back door.

Mom remained in the living room.

I waited several minutes before approaching.

She was sitting on the sofa with both hands in her lap.

“What happened?”

“He asked if Thomas was his.”

“And?”

“I told him no.”

I sat across from her.

“What did he say?”

“Nothing for a long time.”

She stared toward the ocean.

“Then he asked if you and Renee were his.”

I felt something inside me crack.

“He asked that?”

She nodded.

“I told him yes.”

“And he believed you?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked toward the deck.

Dad stood with his back to us.

Thirty years of marriage had just been rewritten in one conversation.

“He has every right to be furious.”

“I know.”

“He may leave.”

“I know.”

Mom looked at me.

“I don’t expect you to defend me.”

“I won’t.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

A strange peace existed in that.

Dad came back inside.

His face was pale.

He looked at Harrow’s phone connection.

“Is he still there?”

Harrow answered.

“Yes, David.”

Dad stared at the device.

“So you slept with my wife.”

No one moved.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“About eight months.”

Dad nodded.

“And the child?”

“My biological son.”

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“You knew all this time.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know she never told me?”

“Yes.”

Dad laughed once.

Then he unplugged the phone from speaker and held it.

“What kind of man does that?”

Harrow’s answer was quiet.

“A cowardly one.”

Dad stopped.

No defense.

That seemed to make his anger harder to use.

Dad put the phone down.

“Do you love him?”

Mom answered.

“Thomas?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Harrow.”

Mom’s face crumpled.

“No.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

That honesty hurt everyone.

Dad nodded slowly.

“At least we’re done lying.”

He walked toward the front door.

Mom stood.

“Where are you going?”

“I don’t know.”

“David.”

He turned.

“I am not asking your permission.”

She froze.

Then nodded.

“No.”

His face softened for half a second.

“I need space.”

“I understand.”

Dad left.

Mom watched the door close.

She did not chase him.

That may have been the hardest thing she did all day.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice.

Young.

Careful.

“Is this Dana?”

My heart stopped.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“My name is Thomas.”

Nobody in the kitchen moved.

He continued.

“Daniel called me.”

I looked at Mom.

She had gone completely still.

Thomas took a breath.

“I don’t know if this is a good idea.”

“Neither do I.”

He laughed softly.

It sounded nervous.

Human.

“I heard you found out today.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For becoming one more thing dropped on you.”

The sentence sounded so familiar that my throat tightened.

“You didn’t do anything.”

“I know.”

Another pause.

“But I also know what it feels like when people make your existence into a problem they need to solve.”

I closed my eyes.

I understood him immediately.

“Do you want to talk?”

“I think so.”

“To me?”

“Yes.”

“Why me?”

“Because you didn’t give me away.”

Mom flinched.

Thomas must have heard something in my silence.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

I looked at Mom.

She nodded for me to continue.

“Don’t apologize for telling the truth.”

Thomas inhaled.

“I’m not ready to talk to Margaret.”

“That’s okay.”

Mom closed her eyes.

Tears slid down her face.

“I mean that,” I said.

“Thank you.”

“What about Renee?”

“I’d like to speak to both of you.”

I swallowed.

“She’d like that.”

He was quiet.

Then he said, “There’s something else you should know.”

Of course there was.

“What?”

“Grandma came to see me.”

I stared.

“When?”

“Two months before she died.”

Mom’s hand flew to her mouth.

I looked at Victor.

He was equally shocked.

Thomas continued.

“She didn’t tell anyone.”

My heart pounded.

“What did she say?”

“That she was sorry.”

I closed my eyes.

“For what?”

“For helping arrange the adoption.”

The room seemed to stop around me.

“And?”

Thomas took a breath.

“She told me someday I might meet my sisters.”

My throat tightened.

“What else?”

“She gave me something.”

I looked toward the old lighthouse book on the coffee table.

“What?”

Thomas’s voice softened.

“A key.”

I stared at Victor.

He slowly shook his head.

Not the bank key.

Something else.

Thomas continued.

“She said if the beach house ever became yours, I should give it to you.”

My pulse accelerated.

“What does it open?”

“I don’t know.”

Mom whispered, “Oh my God.”

Thomas heard her voice.

He went silent.

I said quickly, “You’re on speaker.”

He inhaled.

“I didn’t know.”

“Do you want me to take you off?”

A long pause.

Then:

“No.”

Mom covered her mouth.

Thomas spoke again.

“I’m not ready to talk to you.”

She nodded even though he could not see.

“I understand.”

“I may never be.”

Her face crumpled.

“I understand.”

Another long silence.

Then Thomas said, “But I can bring Dana the key.”

I looked around the house Grandma had fought so hard to keep out of everyone else’s hands.

The whole day had been built from locks.

Accounts.

Boxes.

Letters.

Property.

Secrets.

And somewhere inside this house, apparently, another locked thing remained.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“About two hours away.”

“Do you want to come here?”

Thomas hesitated.

Then answered.

“Yes.”

Mom looked at me.

I held her gaze.

Her son had chosen the house.

But not her.

She nodded once.

No protest.

No claim.

No need turning itself into ownership.

“Come,” I said.

And for the first time since I had bought the beach house, I opened my home to someone because I chose to.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Thomas Brought Grandma’s Last Key to the Beach House
