that?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she let him believe that?”

“Because she thought it was the only way to keep Leo safe.”

I could not street sat a black SUV.

It had not been there when we started talking.

The lights were off.

The windows were dark.

“Do you know that car?”

Evelyn stood.

“Turn off the kitchen light.”

My hand moved automatically.

The room went dark.

“Why?”

“That car wasn't there before.”

We watched it.

No one got out.

No headlights.

No movement.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

You should not have opened Sarah's letter.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Another message appeared.

Leave Daniel Whitmore alone.

Then a third.

Do not tell the boy who his father is.

I showed Evelyn the screen.

She went pale.

“You knew this could upstairs.

We both froze.

Leo.

Awake.

Listening.

I looked toward the staircase.

Then my phone vibrated again.

A photograph appeared.

It was Leo.

Walking home from school.

The picture had clearly been taken from across the street.

Someone had been following him.

Under the
