address Evelyn had given us belonged to a modest apartment above a bakery on a narrow street where delivery vans squeezed past parked cars.

There was no mansion.

No expensive vehicle.

No assistant waiting outside.

Nothing about the building suggested the family wealth Evelyn had described.

Daniel worked at a public hospital.

He had become the doctor he once wanted to be.

We found him after a night shift.

He was walking alone, carrying a worn leather bag.

He looked older than the photograph.

Much older.

But I recognized him immediately.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

The color drained from his face.

“Evelyn?”

She nodded.

His eyes moved to me.

Then to Leo.

He froze.

Leo looked back at him.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Daniel took one step forward.

Then stopped himself.

“Who is that?”

I swallowed.

“His name is Leo.”

Daniel's expression collapsed.

“No.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“No.”

Then at me.

“That isn't possible.”

Leo looked confused.

Daniel stared at him as if he were looking at someone who had walked out of a photograph.

“How old are you?”

Leo hesitated.

“Ten.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

His eyes filled.

Ten years.

Ten years of believing his son had died.

Ten years of mourning a child he had never held.

Leo looked at me.

“Grandma?”

I nodded.

“It's okay.”

Daniel crouched slowly until he was closer to Leo's height.

He was crying now.

Not trying to hide it.

“Do you know who I am?”

Leo shook his head.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then Leo asked the question that seemed to cut through whatever remained of his control.

“Did you know my mom?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.”

“How?”

His face tightened.

“Because I loved her.”

Leo studied him.

“Was she nice?”

A broken laugh escaped Daniel.

“She was stubborn.”

I almost smiled.

“That sounds right.”

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time, I saw shame in his face.

“I don't know what she told you about me.”

“She didn't tell me much,” I said.

He lowered his head.

“That was because she was trying to protect you.”

Evelyn spoke quietly.

“And him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You're saying…”

She nodded.

“Leo is your son.”

Daniel stood abruptly.

He stared at the boy.

“I don't understand.”

“You were told he died,” Evelyn said.

Daniel's voice shook.

“I was.”

“Sarah never gave him up.”

“Then why?”

“Because your father wanted him.”

Daniel looked as though someone had struck him.

“My father?”

I nodded.

“Your father threatened Sarah.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“I knew he hated her.”

“You knew he threatened her?”

Daniel looked away.

“I knew some of it.”

“Not enough.”

“No.”

His answer was quiet.

Honest.

I appreciated that more than I expected.

Daniel looked at Leo again.

“I went to the hospital.”

“I know.”

“I tried to see Sarah.”

“I know.”

“She wouldn't let me in.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed my father was watching.”

Evelyn nodded.

“She was right.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I should have stayed.”

“You should have fought harder,” I said.

He accepted that.

“I know.”

There was no argument.

No excuse.

Only a man standing in front of the son he had mourned for a decade.

Then Daniel said something that made me look at Evelyn.

“I went to Sarah's funeral.”

My chest tightened.

“You were there?”

He nodded.

“I stood across the cemetery.”

“Why didn't you come to us?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“After the funeral.”

I stared at him.

“You came to my house?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I went to the hospital first.”

“Why?”

“To ask for Sarah's records.”

“And?”

“They were already sealed.”

“By whom?”

“My father.”

The answer landed like a stone.

Daniel opened his bag.

From inside, he removed a small envelope.

“I kept this for ten years.”

He handed it to me.

My name was written on it.

I recognized the handwriting.

Sarah's.

I looked at Evelyn.

She whispered, “That is the letter Daniel wrote to her.”

I stared at the envelope.

The letter I had been told existed.

The letter Sarah had asked Evelyn to preserve.

The letter Daniel had written before everything fell apart.

Leo was standing beside me.

He looked from my face to the envelope.

“What is it?”

I hesitated.

Daniel looked at him.

Then at me.

“Tell him.”

I looked down at my grandson.

For ten years, I had protected him from a truth that Sarah had believed was dangerous.

Now the truth was standing directly in front of us.

I opened my mouth.

Before I could speak, Evelyn's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed immediately.

“What?”

She listened.

Then she looked at me.

“The police just called.”

“What happened?”

“The officers watching your house found something.”

“What?”

“A second vehicle.”

My stomach dropped.

“Where?”

“Near Leo's school.”

Daniel heard her.

His face hardened.

“What kind of vehicle?”

“A black SUV.”

He went completely still.

Then he looked at me.

“I know that car.”

I felt cold.

“Whose is it?”

Daniel's eyes moved toward Leo.

“My father's.”

Leo was watching us now.

He understood enough to know that something was wrong.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Does your grandson know?”

“No.”

“Then don't tell him here.”

“Why?”

Daniel's voice became urgent.

“Because if my father knows Leo is alive, he won't wait.”

I tightened my grip around Sarah's letter.

“For what?”

Daniel looked at me.

“To take his grandson.”

The street suddenly felt too open.

Too exposed.

A bakery door opened behind us, and warm air carrying the smell of bread spilled onto the pavement.

For one strange second, ordinary life continued around us.

People walked past.

A bicycle rattled over the stones.

Someone laughed inside the café.

And in the middle of all of it stood a father looking at the son he had mourned for ten years.

I pulled Leo closer.

“We're not going anywhere with your father.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

“My father doesn't need to convince you.”

He looked toward the end of the street.

“He only needs to make you afraid.”

I held his gaze.

“I've been afraid for ten years.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“So have I.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“There is something else.”

We both looked at her.

She reached into her bag.

“The reason Sarah was so frightened wasn't only because of Daniel's father.”

“What else was there?”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He seemed to understand before I did.

“His father wasn't the only person who knew about Leo.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who else?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“My father's attorney.”

He looked toward the road.

“And if he knows Leo survived, then the letter Sarah left isn't just proof of what happened.”

He looked at me.

“It could be the thing they are willing to hurt us to get.”

I looked down at the envelope in my hand.

Ten years of silence.

Ten years of grief.

Ten years of lies.

And suddenly I understood that Sarah's last request had never been simply to tell the truth.

It had been a warning.

The truth was valuable.

And someone was already coming for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Daniel Finally Told Me What Happened After Sarah’s Funeral, and One Missing
