States two days later.

Daniel wanted to go directly to Boston.

I wanted Leo somewhere safe.

Those two priorities had never felt more difficult to balance.

We arranged for Leo to stay temporarily with an old family friend under police protection.

He hated the idea.

“I just met my dad,” he said.

“I know.”

“And now you're sending me away.”

“Only for a little while.”

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel crouched in front of him.

“This isn't because we don't want you with us.”

“Then why?”

“Because we do.”

Leo studied him.

“You really are my dad?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Leo looked at him for a long moment.

“Then don't disappear again.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“I won't.”

That promise followed us long after we left.

The doctor’s daughter lived in Cambridge.

Her name was Anna Ruiz.

She was a medical archivist and had spent years preserving her mother's professional papers.

When we arrived, she was cautious.

“I don't know why you believe my mother had anything connected to Sarah Miller.”

I placed Margaret's letter on the table.

Anna read it.

Her expression changed.

“My mother never talked about this.”

“Maybe she couldn't.”

Anna looked at Daniel.

“You're Daniel Whitmore.”

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

“My mother hated your father.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“She said he treated hospitals like businesses and people like assets.”

Daniel looked down.

“She was right.”

Anna disappeared into another room.

She returned carrying a cardboard box.

“This was never catalogued.”

She set it on the table.

“My mother told me that if anyone named Sarah Miller ever came asking questions, I was to give them this.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Why didn't she give it to anyone?”

“Because nobody came.”

Anna opened the box.

Inside were medical notes, photographs, and a sealed envelope.

My hands trembled.

The envelope was addressed to Sarah.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Dr. Elena Ruiz.

I opened it.

The letter explained that Sarah's condition had been serious but not necessarily fatal.

There had been complications.

But the doctor had believed Sarah could survive.

Then, after the delivery, someone from the Whitmore Foundation approached the hospital administration.

The letter did not accuse anyone of causing Sarah's death.

It said something more disturbing.

Her medical orders had been altered.

A medication had been authorized that Dr. Ruiz had not prescribed.

Anna looked at me.

“My mother suspected someone interfered with the treatment.”

Daniel's face had gone white.

“Was Sarah murdered?”

Anna shook her head.

“My mother never concluded that.”

“But she suspected something.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she report it?”

“She tried.”

“What happened?”

Anna opened another folder.

Inside was a copy of a complaint.

It had been filed with the hospital board.

Then withdrawn.

“Why?”

Anna's eyes met Daniel's.

“Because your grandfather threatened her.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“He died years ago.”

“Your father did.”

Daniel stared at her.

“My father is alive.”

Anna looked confused.

“No.”

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?”

Anna took another paper from the folder.

“William Whitmore died six years ago.”

Daniel stared at the page.

“That can't be right.”

“It was a private death. The family announced it only to business partners.”

I looked at him.

“Then who has been threatening us?”

Daniel looked genuinely stunned.

“My father.”

“You said he was alive.”

“I believed he was.”

Anna shook her head.

“Then someone has been using his name.”

I thought of the messages.

The black SUV.

The photographs.

The warnings.

The person who wanted us to believe William Whitmore was still controlling everything.

Daniel sat down.

“My father died six years ago.”

Evelyn whispered, “Then why did I see him?”

We all looked at her.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Where?”

“At a foundation event.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That was impossible.”

“I spoke to him.”

“Evelyn, my father had been dead for three years.”

She stared at him.

“I know what I saw.”

Anna quietly closed the box.

“Maybe you saw someone who wanted you to think he was William.”

Daniel stood.

“Who?”

Anna shook her head.

“I don't know.”

I looked again at the photographs.

One image showed Sarah in the hospital.

Another showed Dr. Ruiz.

Another showed Margaret Whitmore.

Then I noticed something.

A man stood blurred in the background of one photograph.

Dark suit.

Silver tie clip.

I leaned closer.

“Who is that?”

Anna took the photograph.

She stared.

“My mother said that man was always around the hospital.”

Daniel looked.

Then his expression changed.

“Hale.”

“Victor Hale?”

“Yes.”

Anna frowned.

“Who is he?”

“My father's attorney.”

The pieces began moving.

Hale had told Daniel that Sarah rejected him.

Hale had shown Daniel a false hospital record.

Hale had gone to my house after Sarah's funeral.

Hale had apparently been involved in the hospital records.

And now his image appeared in a photograph taken during Sarah's treatment.

I felt anger replace fear.

“Then he has been lying to all of us.”

Daniel nodded.

“And if he knows about the birth record…”

“He'll try to destroy it.”

Anna looked frightened.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“My mother kept a second set of records.”

“Where?”

“She gave them to someone she trusted.”

“Who?”

Anna hesitated.

“Margaret Whitmore.”

I stared at her.

“Daniel's mother?”

“Yes.”

Daniel's face changed.

“That means my mother knew.”

“She knew enough to protect evidence.”

“Where is it?”

Anna opened another drawer.

“My mother wrote this address before she died.”

She handed me a piece of paper.

The address was in Vermont.

A small town.

A private property.

I looked at Daniel.

“We go there.”

He nodded.

But before we left, Anna stopped us.

“There is something you should know.”

“What?”

“My mother believed Sarah had a chance to survive.”

I waited.

“She believed the most important medical decision was made after the baby was born.”

My chest tightened.

“What decision?”

Anna looked at the file.

“Whether to operate.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Who made it?”

Anna pointed to a signature.

I read the name.

Dr. Adrian Bell.

The same doctor who had received payments from the Whitmore Foundation.

Daniel whispered, “My father bought him.”

Anna shook her head.

“We don't know that.”

I looked at the signature.

“No,” I said. “But we're going to find out.”

That night, I called the police.

I gave them everything.

The messages.

The photographs.

The names.

The evidence from the storage unit.

And the hospital documents.

For the first time, an investigator said something that gave me hope.

“If these records are authentic, we may have grounds to reopen the investigation into Sarah's death.”

I hung up.

Daniel sat across from me.

“I don't want revenge.”

“Neither do I.”

“I want the truth.”

“So do I.”

He looked toward the window.

“Sarah deserved that.”

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

You found the records.

I stared at the screen.

Another arrived.

You should have left the past buried.

Then a photograph appeared.

Leo.

Standing outside the house where we had left him.

My heart stopped.

I called immediately.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“Where is he?”

I looked at the photograph.

The timestamp was from twelve minutes earlier.

“He's not safe.”

We ran for the car.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Someone Had
