The fraudulent loan had been removed. Adrian had moved away. Emily had her daughter, and the legal arrangements surrounding the child were no longer my concern. I had rebuilt my routines slowly, without making any dramatic promises about becoming a different person.

Then my attorney called.

“Maria, I need you to come in.”

His voice was too careful.

I sat down at my desk.

“Is something wrong with the house?”

“No.”

“The loan?”

“No.”

“Adrian?”

There was a pause.

“Something connected to Adrian.”

I drove to his office that afternoon.

The same attorney who had once spread forged documents across his desk now had a different folder in front of him. Beside it sat the forensic accountant who had helped trace Adrian's financial transfers.

My attorney pushed the folder toward me.

“We received additional records.”

I opened it.

At first, the pages looked ordinary.

Bank statements.

Transfer confirmations.

Business records.

Then I saw a date.

It was nearly a year before Adrian had admitted the affair.

I looked at the accountant.

“What's significant about this?”

He pointed to a payment.

“That's the first transfer we couldn't explain.”

I followed the line.

The recipient was a company I didn't recognize.

“Another company owned by Rebecca?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“This one is different.”

I turned the page.

The same company appeared again.

And again.

Small payments at first.

Then larger ones.

I stared at the dates.

They had begun before Emily became pregnant.

Before Adrian told me he was unhappy.

Before the family gathering.

Before the fraudulent loan.

Before everything I had believed was the beginning of the collapse.

“What was he paying for?”

“We don't know yet.”

My attorney folded his hands.

“But there is something else.”

He pushed another document toward me.

It was a corporate registration.

The company had been created using an address that belonged to an office building in another city.

The registered agent was a man named Thomas Vale.

I knew the name.

I had heard Adrian mention him years earlier.

He had described Thomas as an investor.

Someone who “understood business.”

I looked up.

“Who is he?”

The accountant answered.

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

I stared at the documents.

“Why are you showing me this now?”

“Because the original financial investigation focused on the fraudulent loan and the money transferred to Emily's family. We had no reason then to examine every older business transaction.”

“And now?”

“Now the lender has provided additional records because they are investigating the application.”

I felt an old tension return to my shoulders.

“What does this have to do with me?”

My attorney looked at me.

“We don't know yet.”

I almost laughed.

“That seems to be becoming a pattern.”

He smiled faintly.

Then his expression became serious again.

“There is one thing we do know.”

He turned the page.

“Adrian used information from your property records before the fraudulent loan application.”

I frowned.

“What information?”

“Tax records. Appraisal information. Insurance documentation.”

I stared at the page.

“Why?”

“That is what we need to find out.”

I drove home before sunset.

For the first time in months, I walked into my house and felt something other than peace.

I felt watched.

Not literally.

There was no one outside.

But the discovery changed the meaning of old memories.

The documents Adrian had once requested.

The conversations about property taxes.

The questions about the value of the house.

The casual way he had asked what my mother had paid for renovations.

I had treated those questions as part of marriage.

Now they looked like preparation.

That night, I went through the storage cabinet in my office.

I found old insurance papers.

Tax statements.

A property appraisal.

Receipts from repairs.

Most of it seemed harmless.

Then I found an envelope I hadn't opened in years.

It was addressed to Adrian.

The return address belonged to Thomas Vale's company.

I sat down.

The envelope had never been opened.

I turned it over.

The seal was intact.

For several seconds, I simply stared at it.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a contract.

My name wasn't on it.

Neither was the house.

But Adrian's name was.

The contract described a proposed investment.

The amount was substantial.

Much larger than anything I had known Adrian could access.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Need collateral before closing.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

The note wasn't signed.

But I recognized the handwriting.

Adrian's.

I called my attorney.

He answered immediately.

“Did you find something?”

“Yes.”

I told him about the contract.

His voice changed.

“Don't touch anything else.”

“I already did.”

“Put it in a folder and leave it where it is.”

I did exactly that.

The next morning, the accountant called.

“We found Thomas Vale.”

“Who is he?”

“He was Adrian's business partner.”

I sat up.

“Was?”

“He died two years ago.”

The room seemed suddenly colder.

“What?”

“He died before the affair became known.”

“How?”

“Car accident.”

I waited.

“And?”

“There was an insurance settlement.”

“For Adrian?”

“No.”

The accountant paused.

“For a company Adrian controlled.”

I closed my eyes.

A company I had never heard of.

A company that had received money.

A company connected to a dead business partner.

And now I understood why the records had been so difficult to follow.

Adrian hadn't simply been hiding an affair.

He had been hiding a financial structure.

I asked the accountant to send everything.

He did.

The records showed that Thomas Vale had invested money into Adrian's business years earlier.

The company had eventually failed.

But instead of dissolving cleanly, several assets had been transferred to another entity.

That entity was controlled by Adrian.

The money from Thomas's insurance settlement had later appeared in the company's accounts.

I stared at the figures.

“Was this legal?”

“We don't know.”

“Could Adrian have taken money that wasn't his?”

“We're investigating.”

I leaned back.

My first instinct was anger.

Then something else appeared.

Fear.

Not fear of Adrian.

Fear of what I had almost become responsible for.

If he had used my house as collateral for a much larger transaction, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

The fraudulent loan may have been only one part of a larger attempt to rescue something already collapsing.

That afternoon, Emily called.

I almost didn't answer.

When I did, she sounded nervous.

“Maria, are you sitting down?”

“Yes.”

“I received something from Adrian's attorney.”

“What?”

“It's about the company.”

I frowned.

“What company?”

“The one he told me was his.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did the letter say?”

“He wants me to sign something.”

“What?”

“I don't understand it.”

“Don't sign anything.”

“I knew you'd say that.”

There was silence.

Then she said, “There's another name on the document.”

“Whose?”

“Thomas Vale.”

I looked at the folder on my desk.

“Emily, don't sign anything. Send me a copy.”

She did.

The document was a release.

It stated that Emily had no financial interest in a company connected to Adrian.

But buried in the final pages was a clause that could have protected Adrian from claims involving assets transferred before the divorce.

I called my attorney immediately.

He read it.

“This is significant.”

“Why?”

“Because it suggests Adrian is still trying to clean up his financial exposure.”

“Years later?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the document.

“Why involve Emily?”

“Because she may have been listed as a beneficiary or potential claimant.”

I looked at the date.

The company was still active.

That meant Adrian had not walked away from everything.

He had been quietly managing something.

And whatever it was, he was afraid someone would find it.

That evening, I returned to the old envelope.

The contract inside contained one final page I hadn't noticed.

A handwritten address.

Not Adrian's.

Not Thomas's.

Mine.

My house.

I stared at it.

The same property Adrian had tried to put under a fraudulent loan.

The same house he had wanted me to leave.

The same house his family had pressured me to surrender.

Suddenly, the reason became clearer.

The house had never merely been a place for Adrian to live.

It had been the strongest asset he could reach.

And he had been planning how to reach it long before I knew there was anything to fear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Thought Adrian Had Been Chasing a New Life, Until the Old Contract Revealed Why My House Had Been His Target All Along

For several months after the divorce was finalized, I believed the worst part of my life was behind me.
