Knowledge implied choice. And choice meant Thomas had known enough about Adrian's actions to make a decision about what should happen to me.

My attorney wanted the original letter preserved.

“Don't write on it,” he told me. “Don't fold it again. She held the box carefully, almost protectively.

“I wasn't sure whether I should send you anything,” she said.

“Why did you?”

“Because Thomas wanted you to know.”

She placed the box on the table.

“What happened to him?”

She looked down.

“After the accident, I found documents in his office.”

“About Adrian?”

“About everything.”

My throat tightened.

“Why didn't you come forward then?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Adrian?”

She nodded.

“Not because I thought he would hurt me physically. I was afraid of what he could destroy.”

She opened the box.

Inside were notebooks, copies of contracts, photographs, and handwritten pages.

I recognized the development project immediately.

Claire watched my face.

“Thomas believed Adrian was using your marriage to conceal his financial problems.”

“He knew about me?”

“He knew enough.”

“Did he know Adrian was taking money from our household account?”

“Yes.”

I stared at her.

“How?”

“Adrian told him.”

That hurt more than I expected.

My husband had not merely hidden his finances from me.

He had discussed them with another man.

Perhaps Thomas had known more about my marriage than I did.

Claire pushed a notebook toward me.

“Read the marked pages.”

I opened it.

Thomas's handwriting covered the pages.

Some entries were brief.

Others were detailed.

The earliest concerned Adrian's investment in the failed development.

Then came references to money borrowed from household accounts.

Then notes about the property.

My property.

One entry made me stop.

Adrian says Maria will never agree voluntarily. He believes marriage gives him enough leverage to force the issue later.

I read it twice.

The sentence was dated almost four years before Adrian confessed his affair.

I closed my eyes.

Four years.

He had been thinking about using my house while I was still believing our marriage was ordinary.

Claire sat silently.

I turned another page.

Thomas had written about a confrontation with Adrian.

He had demanded that Adrian repay the money.

Adrian had refused.

Then Thomas wrote something unexpected.

He intends to leave Maria once the property is secured.

I looked up.

“Leave me?”

Claire nodded.

“Thomas believed Adrian had already decided.”

I remembered Adrian's confession.

He had told me the affair had lasted only a few months.

That might have been technically true.

But his intention to leave had existed much longer.

The affair wasn't the beginning.

It was simply the moment he thought he had found someone who would accept the life he wanted.

I turned another page.

There was a name I didn't recognize.

Marcus Reed.

“Who is Marcus?”

Claire frowned.

“I don't know.”

“He appears several times.”

She leaned closer.

“Thomas mentioned him?”

“Yes.”

I read the surrounding entries.

Marcus had apparently worked with Thomas on the development.

But unlike the other investors, he had disappeared after the project failed.

There was no forwarding address.

No later company registration.

Nothing.

I looked at Claire.

“Did Thomas ever explain who he was?”

“Only once.”

“What did he say?”

“That Marcus knew where the missing money went.”

My attorney, who had been quietly reviewing another document, looked up.

“What missing money?”

Claire pointed to the notebook.

“The development lost far more money than the official records showed.”

My attorney began taking photographs of the pages.

“How much?”

Claire named an amount.

It was significantly larger than the transfers we had already traced.

I felt a chill.

“Where did it go?”

“That was what Thomas was trying to determine.”

We spent the rest of the afternoon reviewing the notebook.

The more we read, the less Adrian looked like a man improvising his way through financial trouble.

He had been part of a system.

Other people had moved money.

Companies had been created and closed.

Assets had changed hands.

Thomas had tried to untangle it.

Then he died.

The notebook ended abruptly three weeks before the accident.

The last complete entry concerned Adrian.

Thomas wrote that Adrian had become increasingly desperate.

He believed the only way to recover the missing funds was to secure a loan against my property.

But there was one line beneath it.

Adrian isn't the one who controls the money anymore.

I looked at my attorney.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

“Could Thomas have been referring to another investor?”

“Possibly.”

Claire shook her head.

“He wrote the name Marcus after that.”

We searched the box again.

Under the notebooks was a photograph.

It showed four men standing outside a construction site.

Thomas was there.

Adrian was there.

A third man stood beside them.

The fourth man was unfamiliar.

I turned the photograph over.

A date.

And four initials.

T.V.

A.R.

M.R.

A fourth set.

D.B.

My attorney went still.

“Daniel Brooks.”

The attorney who had represented Adrian at my door.

I stared at the photograph.

“You knew him?”

Claire nodded.

“He worked for Thomas too.”

“Not as an attorney?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Business adviser.”

The room fell silent.

Daniel had not been a stranger hired after Adrian's marriage collapsed.

He had been connected to the development years earlier.

He had known Thomas.

He had known Adrian.

And he had apparently been present when the financial structure was created.

I felt something inside me shift.

The man who had stood outside my house carrying a folder had known the history.

Maybe he had known about the property plan.

Maybe he had known about the missing money.

Maybe he had known exactly why Adrian needed me out of the house.

My attorney said, “We need to speak with him again.”

Daniel refused another informal meeting.

So we sent a formal request for records.

His response arrived two days later.

He claimed attorney-client privilege.

My attorney frowned.

“That only covers certain communications.”

“What about the older business records?”

“We're requesting those separately.”

Daniel resisted.

Then the court became involved.

The records were eventually produced.

Among them was an email from Daniel to Adrian.

It was dated four years before my divorce.

The subject line read:

Property strategy.

I read the message.

It was brief.

Daniel advised Adrian that using my house as collateral without my knowledge would create serious legal exposure.

He told Adrian not to proceed unless the ownership issue was resolved.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel had known.

He had warned Adrian.

But there was no evidence he had ever warned me.

My attorney leaned back.

“This doesn't make him responsible for Adrian's fraud.”

“No.”

“But it establishes knowledge.”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something else.

A second email.

This one was from Adrian to Daniel.

You said Thomas would handle Marcus.

What does that mean?

We didn't know.

But the name Marcus had now appeared in multiple places.

And Daniel had been connected to him.

We needed to find Marcus Reed.

The search took weeks.

Then an investigator located him living under his middle name in another state.

He agreed to speak with us.

The meeting took place in a quiet office.

Marcus looked exhausted.

When I introduced myself, he stared at me.

“You're Maria.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Thomas talked about you.”

“What did he say?”

“That you were the one person Adrian would never willingly sacrifice.”

I almost laughed.

“He tried.”

Marcus looked down.

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because I helped him once.”

My attorney leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Marcus took a breath.

“The development was never what Adrian told you.”

“What was it?”

“A vehicle for moving money.”

I felt the room become very still.

“Whose money?”

Marcus looked at me.

“People who didn't want their names attached.”

“And Thomas?”

“He discovered it.”

“Adrian?”

“He participated.”

“Did he control it?”

“No.”

That answer frightened me more than anything else.

“Who did?”

Marcus looked at my attorney.

Then at me.

“That's what Thomas died trying to prove.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Marcus Finally
